The ear is the opening of the Kidney (*Shen*) and is also the pathway through which the Gallbladder (*Dan*) and Stomach (*Wei*) meridians pass. Therefore, ear diseases manifest in several types: there is deafness caused by Qi rebellion; deafness due to Kidney deficiency; swelling, pain, tinnitus, or deafness caused by obstruction of Wind and Fire; suppurative otitis (*Nong Er*) caused by heat qi entering the ear via the meridions when deficiency exists; and cerumen impaction (*Ding Er*) caused by ear secretions forming nodules that block the ear canal. There are also differences between left-sided deafness, right-sided deafness, and bilateral deafness. Left-sided deafness often arises from extreme anger stirring up Shaoyang Gallbladder Fire, thus affecting the left side first; it is treated primarily with Longhui Wan (Dragon Bile Pill). Right-sided deafness is mostly due to excessive sexual desire stirring up Shaoyin Ministerial Fire, thus affecting the right side first; it is treated primarily with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). Bilateral deafness results from unregulated consumption of rich wine and heavy flavors, stirring up Yangming Stomach Fire, thus affecting both sides; it is treated primarily with Tongsheng San (Universal Salvation Powder) or Guntan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill). Generally speaking, deafness caused by anger is the most common among these three.
Wind deafness occurs when the Qi of the meridians is deficient and Wind pathogen takes advantage of this; when righteous Qi is blocked and Wind evil drums internally, it causes pulling pain in the ear radiating to the head, and in severe cases, leads to complete deafness and blockage.
Yunao Gao (Fish Brain Ointment): Treats chronic wind deafness.
