Qi Obstruction (Qi Ge) causes vexation and fullness, difficulty in eating, and frequent vomiting of saliva. Chunyu Yi formulated Xiaqi Tang (Descending Qi Decoction) to treat this condition; after one day of taking the medicine, the qi descended, after two days the patient could eat, and after three days he recovered.
A farmer suddenly experienced dysphagia while swallowing a soup made of fresh bamboo shoots, which persisted for a year despite various treatments. Wang Zhongyang then prepared a powder using Bi Bo (Long Pepper Fruit), Mai Ya (Sprouted Hordeum Grain, degermed), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Ku Jie Geng (Bitter Platycodon Root), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Bai Kou (White Cardamom Seed), Nan Mu Xiang (Aquilaria Wood), Gao Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizome), and Ban Xia Qu (Pinellia Fermented Powder). Each dose was one qian, decocted in water and taken hot. The next day, the patient's family reported: "Yesterday, the patient suffered extreme pain and could not even swallow his own saliva. Fortunately, he took the medicine, and now there is a boiling sensation and sound in his chest, indicating signs of life. We beg you for the previous prescription. Although he has not eaten for several days, it is merely that wandering qi remains unresolved; he had resigned himself to death, but with this medicine, it can truly be called 'Hun San' (Soul-Returning Powder)." Wang then instructed them to grind rice and cook porridge. When nearly cooked, the medicine powder was added and boiled once more, then given to the patient to drink in one gulp. After taking several doses continuously, the patient recovered. Thus, the formula was named "Hun San" (Soul-Returning Powder). This formula is effective for treating vomiting and regurgitation caused by emotional disorders, dark complexion, yellow eyes, progressive emaciation, and conditions progressing to dysphagia, provided greasy foods are avoided.
*Yong Lei Qian Fang* treats inability to eat due to dysphagia and obstruction as follows: Starve a yellow dog for several days, then feed it raw millet or dry rice. Wait for it to defecate, wash the millet/rice thoroughly, cook into porridge, add a handful of Xie Bai (Allium Macrostemon Bulb), soak until cooked, remove the Allium, add 2 qian of Chen Xiang (Agarwood), and have the patient consume it.
