After eating, the patient feels as if hungry, yet desires to lie down quietly. The whole body, face, eyes, fingernails, and urine are all yellow. This is caused by accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach, compounded by Wind-Dampness pathogen, leading to stagnation and unresolved binding. The Damp-Heat steams and郁 (stagnates), or it results from Cold Damage with no sweating, causing stagnant Heat to lodge inside. Treatment should differentiate based on whether Dampness or Heat predominates. If the complexion is slightly yellow, but the body exhibits mixed colors such as cyan, black, or red, this differs from pure Heat syndromes; one should seek treatment principles from cases of Dampness disorders.
Modified Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder)
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Zhuling (Polyporus), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Chiling (Poria cum Ramo et Ligno), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma).
Major Yinchen Decoction
Yinchen Hao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, half tael), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, three qian), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, four pieces).
Add three sheng of water, first decoct Yinchen until the volume is reduced by half, then add the other two herbs. Decoct to obtain one sheng of liquid, strain, and divide into three doses. When urination becomes smooth and the urine resembles the juice of soap pods, after one night abdominal distension will decrease, and the jaundice will exit via the urine. If the stool passes naturally, remove Dahuang and add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, two qian).
Kou Zongshi’s prescription for a monk who, due to incomplete sweating therapy for Cold Damage, retained residual heat, resulting in yellowing of the face and body, significant fever, and non-resolution over one year:
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus, each three fen), Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, each four qian).
Grind into powder. Use three qian per dose, add four he of water, strain, and take warm after meals. After five days, symptoms reduce; after twenty days, the disease is completely cured.
Nasal Insufflation Genti San (from *Baojian*)
Guti (Cucumeritis Fructus, two qian), Mudingxiang (Tschonoskii Cardamomi Fructus, one qian), Shumi (Panicum miliatum, forty-nine grains), Chidou (Vigna angularis, five fen).
Grind into fine powder. Every night before sleep, first hold a mouthful of water, then insufflate a small amount (half zi) into both nostrils, then sleep until morning. Yellow fluid will be discharged.
Xu Shuwei stated: In summer, a boatman suffered from Jaundice Syndrome, with nasal soreness, body and eyes yellow like gold, red and scanty urine, but normal stool. This pathology does not reside in the Zang-Fu organs but rather in the Clear Passages (Qingdao). If Dahuang is administered, it will inevitably cause abdominal distension, which is adverse. One should use Genti San for nasal insufflation to drain all yellow fluid from the nose, upon which recovery occurs.
Meng Xian’s Prescription
Guti (Cucumeritis Fructus), Dingxiang (Eugenii Flos), Chixiaodou (Vigna angularis, each seven grains).
Grind into powder. Insufflate an amount the size of a bean into the nose. After a short while, yellow fluid flows out. Repeat every other day until cured. Another method uses only Guti ground into powder, insufflated in an amount the size of a soybean. For mild cases, recovery occurs within half a day; for severe cases, within one day, once yellow fluid is discharged.
