Hu Huang Lian Wan (Huanglian Decoction Pill)
*Anemarrhenae Rhizoma* (Ban Qian, half a qian, to resolve food stagnation leading to gan syndrome), *Asafoetida* (Yi Qian Ban, one and a half qian, boiled in vinegar, to resolve meat stagnation), *Moschus* (Si Li, four grains), *Medicated Leaven* (Er Qian Ban, two and a half qian, to resolve food accumulation).
*Coptidis Rhizoma* (Er Qian Ban, two and a half qian, stir-fried, to clear heat accumulation).
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Form pills with pig bile, sized like millet seeds. Take twenty pills per dose, administered with *Baizhu Tang* (Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction).
For pediatric gan syndrome presenting with abdominal distension: Take twenty pills of Hu Huang Lian Wan, administered with Baizhu Tang.
(Supplement according to whether there is Qi deficiency or Blood deficiency.)
In cases of Qi deficiency, use *Ren Shen* (Ginseng) and *Bai Zhu* (Atractylodes Macrocephala), adding detoxifying herbs.
If red spots are observed, *Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang* (Cimicifugae and Puerariae Decoction) must be contraindicated, as diaphoresis would lead to exterior deficiency.
Vomiting, diarrhea, and poor appetite indicate interior deficiency. Absence of vomiting/diarrhea and ability to eat indicate excess patterns.
Tonifying when there is interior excess will result in the formation of carbuncles and swellings.
Internalization of lesions, inverted pustules, and grayish-white color indicate exterior deficiency; alternatively, calcined human feces may be used. For severe black depression, calcined human feces are used. Red, vibrant, open, and convex lesions indicate exterior excess; using exterior-releasing herbs in such cases will cause ulceration without scabbing. If both conditions are present, it indicates simultaneous exterior and interior deficiency.
Regarding variola (smallpox/chickenpox), if exposure occurs before eruption or during early eruption, this medicine should be taken prophylactically. Adjust dosage based on severity: combine heavy doses for mild cases, and light doses for severe cases. The formula uses three cun of loofah near the stem, including seeds and skin, burned until carbonized but retaining its nature, then ground into powder. Mix with brown sugar for consumption. Adding *Zhusha* (Cinnabar) powder is also acceptable.
To Resolve Variola Toxins
*Luffae Fructus Retinervus* (Loofah), *Cimicifugae Rhizoma*, *Paeolia Radix Alba* prepared with wine, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (used raw), *Tangqiu* (Sugar ball), *Sojae Semen Nigrum* (Black Soybean), *Rhinocerotis Cornu*.
This method to resolve variola toxins can be used whether lesions have erupted or not. Grind *Zhusha* (Cinnabar) into powder, mix with honey water, and administer orally. Dosage may be reduced for heavier cases or omitted for lighter ones.
*Raphani Semen* (steamed), *Perillae Caulis*, *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium*, *Zingiberis Rhizoma* (dried, equal parts each), *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (half amount). Add *Bai Zhu* (Atractylodes Macrocephala) if appetite is decreased; decoct and take.
*Ren Shen* (Ginseng, one and a half qian), *Coptidis Rhizoma* (one and a half qian, stir-fried with ginger juice), *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (half a qian), *Phragmitis Rhizoma* leaves (twenty leaves). Divide into two doses. Add one slice of ginger, decoct, and take.
Dai Yun stated: "When ulcers cover the entire mouth, it is identified as such." Apply Jiang Cha (Jiang tea) and Fen Cao (licorice powder) topically.
Another prescription: Equal parts of *Sophorae Flavescentis Radix*, *Minium*, *Myrobalani Fructus*, and *Indigo Naturalis*. Apply topically.
