To treat various traumatic injuries and limb fractures, take this formula regularly.
Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao), Costus Root (Muxiang), Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Angelica Sinensis Root (Chuangui), Fennel Seed (Huixiang), Papaya (Mugua), Tiger Bone (Hugu)
For severe trauma and blood stasis attacking the heart causing chest tightness and abdominal distension, administer immediately. Take seven grains of Croton Seed (Badou) (shelled, wrapped in seven layers of oil paper, pounded to remove oil), along with one piece of fresh ginger. If abdominal blood stasis persists, replenish with cold rice soup; if symptoms do not cease, washing the mouth, face, hands, and feet with water will stop them.
In cases where intestines are ruptured and protrude, this method can be effective, with a hundred attempts unlikely to result in death. Apply genuine sesame oil to the physician's hand to return the intestine into the body. If the intestine has been out for a long time, dried and swollen by wind, apply sesame oil to the intestine until lubricated, then manually assist it back into the abdominal cavity. Immediately pinch the wound closed, suture it with thread or silver wire, apply hemostatic and wound-healing powder, and cover externally with a plaster. After a short while, if sounds are heard in the abdomen, it indicates the intestine has returned to its original position. However, internal abdominal injury is difficult to judge visually; if stool does not pass, treatment is difficult, and even a small needle hole may be incurable. To test the efficacy of the medicine: have the injured person drink a small cup or two or three sips of good-quality distilled liquor. The physician should smell the wound area; if a liquor odor is detected, it indicates intestinal rupture, which is incurable. Do not recklessly administer decoctions, lest you bring ridicule upon yourself as an incompetent practitioner.
The patella (kneecap) is an independently formed bone. Whether crushed by falls/blows or dislocated, the treatment is extremely difficult and requires skill. Fabricate a hoop to tightly encircle the patella, secure it with long-thread woven straps, wear a knee pad, and re-secure. Remove the hoop after several days.
Throat lacerations often cause panic, leading bystanders to flee, leaving the victim to die helplessly. Yet, despite the severity, survival is possible. Upon injury, regardless of whether the trachea or esophagus is affected, immediately support the head with hands, stabilize the throat tube, and tightly pinch to prevent air leakage. Quickly use a large needle threaded with silver wire to suture every inch or so. After suturing, apply wound-healing powder and cover externally with a plaster. The silver wire will naturally fall off after several days. Those who lack silver wire or are not professionals in this field should prepare it in advance to fulfill the benevolent duty of saving lives.
For high falls resulting in coma, appearing dead but not yet having lost vital breath, this method can be effective. Administer Jiegu Dan (Bone-Setting Pill) urgently, mixed with ginger, scallion, oil, and wine. If the person shouted loudly during the fall, with their voice carrying far and sweat/oil pouring like rain, this indicates internal injury to the five zang organs, which is incurable (one in ten thousand survives). Death is imminent; do not let greed for profit or fame override caution.
For swelling caused by falls and blows, where the area refuses to be touched or feels hard and indistinct, indicating bone damage within the muscle: The physician should slowly knead the swelling with their hand. If the swelling temporarily softens and subsides, but a sound is felt within the muscle, it indicates bone fracture. The physician uses the left hand, palm up, to grasp the injured arm, keeping it straight without retreating, fearing the patient's pain might prevent full extension. Use the right hand to manipulate/set the bone. If the bone is shattered, apply medicinal paste. Externally, wrap with layers of hard bamboo leaves used for shoe-making, add multiple layers of paper, and bind tightly with long cloth strips. To change dressing, untie and re-bind as before. For simple swelling/trauma, only use powdered medicine internally and paste externally. If pain is unbearable, add frankincense powder to both the internal medicine and the plaster.
For fractures piercing through the skin, the ends of the broken bone must be sharp like blades. First, numb and fix with medicine, then file down the sharp ends with a rasp. Press the bone ends back into place, wrap externally with several layers of bamboo leaves, and bind according to standard procedures. Then administer decoctions or powders. As tendons, sinews, and collaterals regenerate, the bone will naturally become solid. If, due to the patient's fear of pain or the physician's reluctance to endure difficulty, the sharp ends are not filed down and are hastily pushed into the flesh, new muscle growth will be disrupted by movement, causing the sharp edges to re-expose and tear the new tissue. This leads to non-healing wounds, chronic discharge of clear fluid or pus/blood. Whose fault is this? One must be cautious!
For wrist dislocations: The physician uses the left hand, palm up, to support and manipulate the injured arm. The right hand grasps the lower segment near the elbow firmly. Have the patient sit in a low place, cross fingers and hold knees, using the knee to leverage and push against the arm. Gently release forward, and the joint will reduce spontaneously. Relying on others to pull and drag causes unnecessary pain and may fail to reduce the joint.
The bone between the shoulder blade and tibia is called Tianjing Bone. If fractured, one end will be elevated and uneven. Apply plaster, cushion with several layers of paper, compress with thin cedar boards or powder-coated boards, and bind tightly with long cloth straps passed under the armpits. Continue administering Jiegu Dan (Bone-Setting Pill). After recovery, heavy lifting will cause no harm.
The skull is the chief of all bones and the master of the body. Trauma may cause skull fractures with depression and white fluid leaking like marrow. Seeing this is terrifying, and many believe it means death. Alas, this is merely a failure to observe correctly. It is not marrow, but fluid outside the marrow. Treat according to standard methods, doubling the dose of Tougucao (Speranskia tuberculata root / "Luoda Da"). The depressed bone will rise, and the cracked skull will heal. The efficacy is thus miraculous. Physicians must observe carefully to preserve life and restore wholeness.
