In the autumn of the Wuchen year, Zhang Shengquan suffered from stroke (Zhong Feng) resulting in aphasia. When both Chinese and Western medicine were at a loss, I treated him by needling Baihui (GV20), after which he regained consciousness. At that time, people considered me skilled in treating stroke. In fact, Chinese acupuncture can treat any disease. In the spring of the Jisi year, Mr. Cao Youshan from Licheng suddenly suffered from stroke with coma and aphasia. Urged by Zhang Shengquan, I went to treat him. His pulse had ceased, his eyes were tightly closed, and he did not respond to calls. Inquiry with his family revealed the onset was only one hour prior, though he had noticed facial deviation a few days earlier. This is an excess syndrome (Shi Zheng) and must not be mistaken for deficiency; therefore, I needled Jianjing (GB21) and Zusanli (ST36). His pulse immediately returned, and he could speak. Upon inquiry, he reported severe numbness in all four limbs. I then needled Fengfu (GV16) on the head and Yongquan (KI1) on the foot. Within three days, he could sit up. Subsequently, I needled Dicang (ST4) at the corner of the mouth to correct the facial distortion and Jingming (BL1) near the eye to straighten the gaze. He recovered fully within seven days. For eight years thereafter, his body remained robust and light; although seventy-one years old, he appeared to be around fifty. He once presented me with the inscription "Divine Needle Grants Longevity" as a token of gratitude.
Arm pain accompanied by inability to lift the arm has many causes in medical theory; both deficiency/excess and cold/heat patterns can induce this condition. Initially, people often neglect it, but it may progress to hemiplegia and total immobility, causing severe illness where treatment comes too late—this is akin to how a single spark can start a prairie fire. The wife of Mr. Chu Deyi suffered from chronic arm pain. Despite mixed Chinese and Western treatments and various medications yielding no effect, she finally consulted me. Her right hand could not reach shoulder level, suffering from day-and-night soreness without relief. I diagnosed phlegm obstructing the lung collaterals and blocking the blood vessels. By needling Quchi (LI11) and Hegu (LI4), she recovered immediately. Consequently, Mr. Chu presented a couplet ("Stone words quote Lu Lan; Needle acupoints reveal divine skill expounding Cang Gong's methods") and a postscript noting recovery after a single needle insertion, serving as a record of facts.
Mr. Lu Liankui from Wuxing was physically robust and free of disease, except for frequent numbness in his left hand. Previous mixed treatments failed, with warnings to prevent the development of wind disorders. The previous year, I cured his wife of migraines. Trusting that golden needles could cure such ailments, he was healed after needling Shousanli (LI10). This was mentioned in the preface of this book. Generally, slight numbness in hands and feet is ignored by people, unaware that such symptoms are common in the early stages of wind disorders. If not addressed promptly, they may lead to other conditions that become incurable, such as cerebral congestion, cerebral hemorrhage, or heart disease. Tracing back to the root in TCM theory, these are all categorized sub-types of the stroke syndrome.
