Mr. Huang Jinrong suffered from toothache for more than twenty days. He had taken various bitter, cold, and purgative prescriptions to clear heat and drain fire, but with no effect, causing him distress in both sleep and diet. I happened to visit him on other business and asked whether this condition could be treated with acupuncture. I replied that except for pain caused by dental caries (蛀齿), all other types are treatable. I then needled the Hegu (LI4) and Lüxi (KI6) acupoints, among others. Upon removal of the needles, the pain was immediately relieved. Mr. Huang said, "The golden needle treats diseases with such divine speed; I regret not using it earlier, thus enduring over twenty days of suffering."
During a discussion on Golden Needle Medicine among Chinese and foreign physicians, Mr. Ouchi Yasuzo, President of the Dōbun Institute, was present. He inquired whether the golden needle could treat chronic lower back pain lasting many years. I answered, "Yes." Invited to examine him every other day, he stated that at sixty-two years old, he had been ill for thirteen years. His daily activities of sitting, lying down, and rising were inconvenient. Specifically, before rainy weather or solar terms, not only was he unable to turn his body, but his lower back skin felt as cold as ice. Mixed Chinese and Western treatments failed to relieve his suffering. Previously, he had returned to his home country and sought treatment from renowned Japanese acupuncturists, also without significant effect. While speaking, he showed me moxibustion scars on his arms, waist, and legs. I said, "The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: 'When the Taiyang channel is affected, it leads to lower back pain.' Taiyang corresponds to the Bladder organ (膀胱府). It also says: 'The waist is the mansion of the Kidney; inability to turn indicates the Kidney Qi is failing.' Since you cannot rotate your body and your lower back muscles feel abnormally cold, this is undoubtedly due to Kidney Yang deficiency and collapse. We should warm and unblock the Kidney mansion to dispel cold-dampness and assist the Primordial Yang." I then needled the Shenshu (BL23) acupoint. His lower back immediately felt remarkably warm. After needle removal, he stood up normally, exclaiming that over ten years of pain was removed with a single needle, asking how it could be so swift. He subsequently inscribed "Divine Art of East Asia" (东亚神术) as a gift.
*Jinzhen Mizhuan* (Secrets of the Golden Needle) was personally authored by my teacher, Mr. Fang Shen'an of Hefei. My teacher came from a hereditary medical family, proficient in military strategy. Amidst commanding thousands of troops, he obtained the secret golden needle techniques from Master Huang Shiping. For ten years, he avoided worldly honors, practicing medicine along the coastal regions. The number of cases where he revived the dying and regenerated flesh from bones is incalculable. I privately believe that even a low-ranking scholar must harbor a heart to save people and benefit all things. A capable minister and a skilled physician may follow different paths but share the same ultimate goal. Reciting the ancient verse, "One general achieves success at the cost of ten thousand withered bones," one should abandon the military path for medicine. How does human rank compare to the heavenly virtue? Zhi Fo (Zhao Chifo, self-reference) has floated and sunk in the sea of officialdom, contributing nothing to the current national crisis. Holding a minor official post is not my wish. Last year, I wrote to request Master Fang's guidance on the great principles of the golden needle. Grateful for his enlightenment, which felt like bathing in the spring breeze, I acquired the residual essence of this art and achieved remarkable effects. By promoting my teacher's learning and expanding it, can we not sufficiently save the world and help people? Now, my teacher has compiled the secrets taught by Huang Shiping and the profound mysteries of historical acupuncture classics into this book. Thus, the merit of saving lives will endure for a hundred generations without decline.
