Yamen (GV17), Laogong (PC8), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Yongquan (KI1), Taixi (KI3), and Zhongwan (CV12) connect; Huantiao (GB30), Zusanli (ST36), and Hegu (LI4) join together. These are the Nine Needles for Restoring Yang.

Internal cataracts (opacification of the lens causing visual impairment) have originated in eighteen varieties. The medically proficient and wise must observe with care, clearly knowing their shapes one by one; when inserting needles, one will naturally enter the profound mystery. Observe whether they are cold, hot, deficient, or excess. If there is much fright, first administer Zhenxin Wan (Calming the Heart Pill). For weak nebulae (thin corneal opacities), use fine needles; for old cicatrices (thick corneal scars), use coarse needles to拨 (dredge/displace). Needle techniques cannot be uniform. If the patient is deficient, recently recovered from illness, or pregnant, one should know that post-needle care and recuperation are difficult. On days without rain or wind, chosen as auspicious, one must keep a pure fast for three days before needling. Calm the mind and stabilize the will to preserve true Qi; do not mix noise when chanting Buddha's name or interacting with relatives. The patient sits cross-legged facing brightness; the physician must entirely calm their heart field. If bleeding occurs, do not panic but stop the hand; wrap and seal as before, do not look frequently. If headache is unbearable, take Caowu Yan (Aconite Smoke) mixed with hot tea. Only after unsealing in July can one see; when taking Huasheng Shui (Peanut Water) medicine, do not speak. Take Huanjing Yuansan (Restore Vision Powder/Pill) firmly for one hundred days, until the ice wheel (moon/vision) penetrates the nine abysses (clear vision restored deeply).
After internal cataract golden needle treatment, the physician's methods must be refined and subtle. Wrap black beans in cotton like a ball, arrange slowly on the eye for moxibustion/warming. The pillow at the head side must be level; lie supine for three days, do not dislike the delay. After sealing, slight pain may occur; if Naofeng (Brain Wind/headache due to wind pathogen) moves, do not doubt. Whether needling or warming, follow previous methods; if pain is extreme, fire warming is suitable. Contain salted white plums to stop throat vomiting; support when rising for urination or defecation. Loud calling or private desires will disturb the eyeball wheel, seeing snow flying (visual snow/flashes). For thirty-seven days, do not wash face with decoction; if needle marks are wet, pain is slight. Be cautious with Wuxin (Five Pungent Spices), alcohol, and wheat products for a year. When going out or ascending halls, walk slowly. On days when both eyes are clear and healthy, the arrogant guest blames me for leaking the sacred [secret].

Needling tonification and sedation distinguish cold and heat; sedating cold and tonifying heat must be differentiated. Pinching the finger outward is the method for sedation; pinching inward is the secret for tonification. To sedate the left, use the thumb; to sedate the right, the thumb should pull backward.
To tonify the left, the index finger rubs forward; to tonify the right, the thumb pulls upward.
Why are there two types of tonification and sedation? Because meridians originate from both sides. One must understand Ying-Sui (Following and Opposing); following is tonification, opposing is sedation.
Ancients distinguished tonification/sedation by left/right; modern people distinguish by male/female. Male and female meridians grow similarly, circulating day and night without pause. Hand Yang meridians go up to the head; Yin meridians go from chest to fingers and stop. Foot Yang meridians go from head to foot; Yin meridians go up to the abdomen and knot. Following means the needle head follows the meridian's flow; opposing means the needle head opposes the meridian to seize it. Furthermore, determine inhalation/exhalation for tonification/sedation: inhale for sedation, exhale for tonification—this is truly wonderful. For tonification, exhale to exit, then insert needle; know the Sanfei (Three Flights) technique. When Qi arrives, exit needle; inhale to insert, withdraw quickly and press the acupoint urgently. For sedation, inhale to insert needle; know how to block Qi so it reaches the whole body. When Qi arrives, exit needle; exhale to exit, withdraw slowly and leave the acupoint open/unsealed.
This secret comes from Zi Sang Jun. I now teach you, your heart is cleared of snow (confusion). This is the mystery within mysteries of tonification and sedation; do not speak lightly before others.
