If the face appears purple, it indicates the exhaustion of Heart Qi (Heart energy), and death will occur in five days. If the face is red with sunken eyes, it indicates the exhaustion of Liver Qi (Liver energy), and death will occur in three days. If the face is yellow with heavy limbs, it indicates the exhaustion of Spleen Qi (Spleen energy), and death will occur in nine days. If the face is pale with retracted nostrils, it indicates the exhaustion of Lung Qi (Lung energy), and death will occur in three days. If the chest skin resembles ripe yellow beans, it indicates the exhaustion of Bone Qi (Bone energy), and death will occur in one day. If the face is black with yellow ears accompanied by groaning, it indicates the exhaustion of Kidney Qi (Kidney energy), and death will occur in four days. If the mouth is open, lips are cyanotic, and hair is withered, it indicates the extinction of the Lung organ, and death will occur in five days. Generally, if a sick child presents with edema on the dorsum of the feet, heaviness of the body, incontinence of urine and feces, and fixed eyes without rotation, these are signs of death. However, if the disease is about to heal, a yellow face and yellow sclera indicate that there is still vitality.
In dysentery (dysentery), the child's eyebrows are furrowed; in convulsive disorders (convulsions), the cheeks are red; in thirst, the lips carry a reddish hue; in vomiting and diarrhea, the face is puffy and yellow.
When heat is severe, the eyes appear hazy; a bluish color indicates convulsions; a white color indicates diarrhea; a purplish-red color indicates Cold Damage (Shanghan).
Song by Lady Tang:
If horizontal blue-green vessels are seen at the Shan Gen (root of the nose), this illness is known to involve two episodes of fright; if the color is red-black due to fatigue, there is intermittent vomiting and diarrhea; if the color is red, crying continues throughout the night.
Blue-green vessels arising from the left Tai Yang (Taiyang) area indicate one episode of fright, which requires careful analysis; red indicates Cold Damage with slight dryness and heat; black-blue indicates injury from excessive breastfeeding.
Red vessels on the right need not be discussed much; if present, frequent frights are inevitable? Red and crimson indicate wind drawing into the eyes; if black and deep, death comes in three days.
Cyanotic and dark fingernails, along with cyanotic lips, signal adverse conditions where the illness may subside; suddenly emitting crow-like sounds with urgent Heart Qi indicates that life is indeed hard to save.
Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworms) retreating to the anus presents in three ways; expulsion from the mouth and nose is most unbearable; if white worms accompany black ones, life is indeed difficult to prolong.
Sores and pain in the four limbs are not auspicious; downward rushing Qi striking the heart accompanied by slippery bowels, panting with sweating but no fever, and hands clutching the chest and diaphragm definitely lead to disaster.
Pure and clean red indicates peace, requiring no alarm; encountering red mixed with black makes stability difficult; if red becomes chaotic and blue-green is even more prominent, expelling wind-phlegm brings immediate relief.
Slight red indicates external fright; if dense like rice grains, the condition is hard to lighten; scattered red often results from anger causing chaos, and combined with spasms, it is truly hard to calm.
Infants suffering from abdominal diseases one month after birth, frowning and wailing, are diagnosed as Pan Chang Qi Tong (Coiled Intestine Pain); crying, wailing, and groaning require immediate therapeutic intervention.
Infants born on the first day with emaciated bodies, sparse bald hair, fundamentally suffer from Ghost Fetus (congenital deficiency or fetal toxin).
