(From Yang's Discourse)
On the discussion of Stroke (Zhong Feng): Before the onset of stroke, one or two months, or three to four months in advance, the lower legs and shins frequently present with sensations of soreness, heaviness, and numbness, which resolve only after a long time. This is a sign that stroke is imminent. At this time, moxibustion should be urgently applied to Zusanli (ST36) and Jinggu (GB39), four points in total, three moxa cones each. Afterwards, decoct raw green onion, mint, peach leaves, and willow leaves, and wash the area with the soup. The moxibustion allows the pathogenic wind and qi to exit through the moxa sores. Whether during the transition from spring to summer or from summer to autumn, moxibustion is suitable; it is ideal to maintain moxa sores on both feet constantly. However, people often do not believe in this method. If sudden stroke occurs due to unregulated diet, excessive sexual activity, and alcohol consumption, moxibustion can be simultaneously applied to seven points, three moxa cones each. If symptoms are on the left, moxa the right side; if on the right, moxa the left side. Baihui (GV20) and the point anterior to the ear are included.
[1] Yang-type Stroke presenting with aphasia and paralysis of hands and feet: Select Hegu (LI4), Jianyu (LI15), Shousanli (LI10), Baihui (GV20), Jianjing (GB21), Fengshi (GB31), Huantiao (GB30), Zusanli (ST36), Weizhong (BL40), and Yanglingquan (GB34). (Needle the unaffected limbs first, then the affected limbs.)
[2] Yin-type Stroke presenting with hemiplegia, limb stiffness, and spasm of hands and feet belongs to Yin syndrome. The treatment follows the same principle, but employ tonification first and sedation second.
[3] Heatstroke leading to loss of consciousness: Select Shuigou (GV26), Hegu (LI4), Neiting (ST44), Baihui (GV20), Zhongji (CV3), and Qihai (CV6).
Question: This symptom usually appears in the sixth and seventh lunar months, but also in the eighth, ninth, and tenth months. What is the etiology?
Answer: The etiology varies. If physicians are unaware, they cannot explain why it occurs in the eighth, ninth, and tenth months. It is caused by prior exposure to summer-heat, which enters the Spleen and Stomach, penetrates the meridians, and irrigates the body. It may be triggered by anger, excessive drinking, indulgence in sex damaging the body, or external wind invasion, manifesting in the eighth or ninth month, making it difficult to treat. If contracted in the sixth or seventh month, the disease is shallow, wind-pathogen is not vigorous, Qi and Blood are not exhausted, and constitution is not weak, making it easy to treat. Additionally needle: Zhongchong (PC9), Xingjian (LR2), Quchi (LI11), and Xiaose (SI1).
[4] Stroke leading to loss of consciousness: Select Shuigou (GV26), Zhongchong (PC9), and Hegu (LI4).
Question: How does this disease arise? Why is there no effect when needling the above points?
Answer: This is because the needle force did not reach the disease site, tonification and sedation were unclear, Qi and Blood were disordered, or the needles were removed too quickly. If the previous points are ineffective, needle the following points again.
[5] Stroke with locked jaw (Trismus): Select Jiache (ST6), Shuigou (GV26), Baihui (GV20), Chengjiang (CV24), and Hegu (LI4). (All should use sedation.)
Question: Why is there no effect with the previous points for this symptom?
Answer: This is due to the accumulation of Wind-Phlegm, disorder of Qi and Blood, and failure of Yin and Yang to ascend and descend. Needle the following points again: Lianquan (CV23) and Shuigou (GV26).
[6] Hemiplegia and Stroke: Select Jinggu (GB39), Kunlun (BL60), Hegu (LI4), Jianyu (LI15), Quchi (LI11), Shousanli (LI10), and Zusanli (ST36).
Question: Why does the symptom recur after needling?
Answer: This is because the depth of insertion was unknown, tonification and sedation were unclear, and deficiency and excess were not distinguished. Needle the previous points again, and additionally needle: Jianjing (GB21)... (Text cuts off here).
[7] Facial Paralysis (Deviation of Mouth and Eye) and Stroke: Select Dicang (ST4), Jiache (ST6), Shuigou (GV26), and Hegu (LI4).
Question: Why does the symptom recur one or half a month after initial effective needling?
Answer: It must be due to lack of restraint in sexual activity and unregulated diet. Needle the following points again, and there will be no ineffectiveness: Tinghui (GB2), Chengjiang (CV24), and Yifeng (TE17).
[8] Stroke with Left Hemiplegia and Right Flaccidity: Select Zusanli (ST36), Yangxi (LI5), Hegu (LI4), Zhongzhu (TE3), Yangfu (GB38), Kunlun (BL60), and Xingjian (LR2).
Question: Why is there no effect after needling several points?
Answer: Wind-Phlegm has accumulated in the meridians, Qi and Blood are fighting, and Cold-Damp-Wind pathogens have entered internally, causing stagnation. Needle the following points again. Needle the unaffected limbs first, then the affected limbs. Fengshi (GB31), Qiuxu (GB40), and Yanglingquan (GB34).
[9] Central Headache and Vertex Pain: Select Baihui (GV20), Hegu (LI4), and Shangxing (GV23).
Question: Why does the symptom recur one or two days after needling, worse than before?
Answer: All Yang meridians converge at the head. One should initially use tonification followed by sedation, emphasizing more tonification and less sedation. If the disease recurs and worsens, the method should be sedation, which will be effective. Needle the following points again. For True Headache (Zhen Tou Tong), morning onset leads to evening death, and evening onset leads to morning death; physicians must treat with care, otherwise it is difficult to treat.
[10] Migraine or Central Headache: Select Fengchi (GB20), Hegu (LI4), and Sizhukong (TE23).
Question: Why is there no effect after needling the above points?
Answer: There may be Phlegm-Fluid retention in the chest and diaphragm, and "Thief Wind" penetrating into Naohu (Brain Gate). When migraine or central headache occurs, pain radiates to the inner arm, or hands and feet feel heavy and cold. If untreated for a long time, it becomes paralysis. It should also be treated by distinguishing Yin and Yang. If needle force is insufficient and ineffective, needle Zhongwan (CV12) to drain lower pathology, then Zusanli (ST36) to dispel wind, and finally the previous points. Zhongwan (CV12), Zusanli (ST36), Jiexi (ST41).
[11] Headache with Dizziness: Select Jiexi (ST41) and Fenglong (ST40).
Question: Why does the symptom recur after initial effectiveness?
Answer: This is due to excessive sexual activity, lying down while drunk and full without avoiding wind and cold, allowing Thief Wind to penetrate the meridians, causing recurrence of cold symptoms. Needle the following points again: Fengchi (GB20).
[12] Headache at Vertex: Select Baihui (GV20), Houding (GV19), and Hegu (LI4).
Question: If needling for vertex headache is ineffective, what other points can treat it?
Answer: Vertex headache is caused by indistinct Yin and Yang, with Wind Pathogen penetrating into Naohu (Brain Gate), hence ineffectiveness. First remove Phlegm, then remove Wind, and it will naturally be effective. Zhongwan (CV12), Zusanli (ST36), Fengchi (GB20), Hegu (LI4).
[13] Drunken Headache: Select Cuanzhu (BL2), Yintang (EX-HN3), and Zusanli (ST36).
Question: Why is there no effect with the previous points?
Answer: This condition involves Phlegm-Fluid retention in the stomach cavity, vomiting clear saliva, dizziness, or unconsciousness for three to five days, refusing food and drink, named Drunken Headache. First regulate Qi, transform Phlegm, harmonize the Stomach, and restore appetite, then dispel Wind-Pain. Zhongwan (CV12), Danzhong (CV17), Zusanli (ST36), Fengmen (BL12).
[14] Corneal Opacity: Select Jingming (BL1), Hegu (LI4), and Sibai (ST2).
Question: Why is there no effect after needling the above points?
Answer: The disease is deep-seated and cannot be cured instantly. Needling two or three times is required for effectiveness. Additionally needle: Taiyang (EX-HN5), Guangming (GB37), Dagukong (EX-UE1), and Xiaogukong (EX-UE2).
[15] Cold Tearing in Wind: Select Cuanzhu (BL2), Dagukong (EX-UE1), and Xiaogukong (EX-UE2).
Question: What is the etiology?
Answer: Exposure to wind while drunk, or acute red eye, or pain, without abstaining from sex, or indulging in fried meats. Women often suffer this due to failing to avoid wind after childbirth, sitting facing the wind, allowing Thief Wind to enter the eyes, or having intercourse during menstruation, causing turbid Qi to rush to the head and eyes. Additionally needle: Xiaogukong (EX-UE2) (for drunken wind exposure in men and women), Sanyinjiao (SP6) (for post-coital symptoms in women), Leikong Shang (above tear duct, 7 moxa cones, rice-sized, effective), and Zhongzhi Ban Zhijian (half-way to fingertip of middle finger, 3 moxa cones, rice-sized).
[16] Internal Cataract: Select Tongziliao (GB1), Hegu (LI4), Linqi (GB14), and Jingming (BL1).
Question: What is the etiology? Why is there no effect with these points?
Answer: Anger injures the Liver, blood fails to return to its residence, Kidney Water is exhausted, and Qi and Blood dissipate. During illness, lack of restraint, excessive sex, and overuse of mind cause this, making it difficult to treat. Additionally needle: Guangming (GB37), Tianfu (LU3), and Fengchi (GB20).
[17] External Eye Obstruction: Select Xiaogukong (EX-UE2), Taiyang (EX-HN5), Jingming (BL1), and Hegu (LI4).
Question: What is the etiology?
Answer: Headache pathogens penetrate the pupil, Qi and Blood surge, upper excess and lower deficiency occur. If previous needling is ineffective, needle the following points two or three times for cure: Linqi (GB14), Cuanzhu (BL2), Zusanli (ST36), and Neijian (inner tip, i.e., corner of the eye, 5 moxa cones).
[18] Blepharitis (Red, Dry, Ulcerated Eyelids): Select Jingming (BL1), Sibai (ST2), Hegu (LI4), Linqi (GB14), and Erjian (LI2).
Question: Why is there no effect after needling?
Answer: Sex after eating/drinking causes Qi and Blood stagnation, itching without dispersion. Rubbing allows Thief Wind to enter seasonally. Additionally needle: Zusanli (ST36) and Guangming (GB37).
[19] Acute Red Eye Pain: Select Hegu (LI4), Zusanli (ST36), Taiyang (EX-HN5), and Jingming (BL1).
Question: What is the etiology?
Answer: Caused by seasonal pathogens, Qi and Blood stagnation, sleeping in the wind, irregular meals, and labor. Additionally needle: Taiyang (EX-HN5), Cuanzhu (BL2), and Sizhukong (TE23).
[20] Red and Swollen Eye Pain: Select Jingming (BL1), Hegu (LI4), Sibai (ST2), and Linqi (GB14).
Question: What is the etiology?
Answer: Due to Kidney Water deficiency, Heart Fire flaring up, Liver failing to control, Heart and Liver blood failing to return to origin, Qi and Blood congesting upward, penetrating the pupil, red vessels crossing the eyeball, hence not dispersing. Additionally needle: Taixi (KI3), Shenshu (BL23), Xingjian (LR2), and Laogong (PC8).
[21] Pterygium: Select Fengchi (GB20), Jingming (BL1), Hegu (LI4), and Taiyang (EX-HN5).
Question: What is the etiology?
Answer: Due to unresolved Cold Damage combined with sexual activity, upper excess and lower deficiency, Qi and Blood congesting upward; or untreated headache, blood penetrating the pupil; or acute red pain; or Qi injuring Liver, Heart Fire flaring up. Also in women postpartum, anger injury, sexual activity within the confinement period disturbing Heart and Liver meridians, irregular diet, hunger/fullness, drunkenness, and fatigue all cause this. It is not curable instantly; gradual treatment is effective. Additionally needle: Fengchi (GB20), Qimen (LR14), Xingjian (LR2), and Taiyang (EX-HN5).
[22] Photophobia: Select Xiaogukong (EX-UE2), Hegu (LI4), Cuanzhu (BL2), and Erjian (LI2).
Question: What is the etiology?
Answer: Acute pain not healed, exposure to wind while traveling, penetration into the eye, blood not returning to residence, Liver failing to store blood, Wind-Toxin penetrating, causing cold tears under light and dry painful eyes in sunlight. Additionally needle: Jingming (BL1), Xingjian (LR2), and Guangming (GB37).
[23] Nasal Congestion with Loss of Smell: Select Yingxiang (LI20), Shangxing (GV23), Wuchu (BL3), and Heliao (LI19).
Question: What is the etiology? Why are multiple points ineffective?
Answer: Unresolved Cold Damage, toxic vapors rushing to the brain, or nasal polyps, with great heat in the brain. Additionally needle: Shuigou (GV26), Fengfu (GV16), Bailao (EX-B1), and Taiyuan (LU9).
