Diseases reside within Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, and rescue requires acupuncture. Observe the fatness or thinness of the body to determine deficiency or excess; distinguish the depth corresponding to the four seasons. This is the method for selecting acupoints: simply differentiate Yin and Yang, as well as Xi Gu (muscle valleys/grooves); regarding Ying-Sui (following and opposing) and Ni-Shun (reverse and smooth) techniques, one must understand the rising and sinking of Qi and Blood circulation.
Tracing back to the *Zhiwei Lun* (Treatise on Subtle Indications), profound meanings are formed into fu (rhapsodies). Knowing the opening and closing of Qi according to the current time, discussing the flow and distribution of meridians. Each time one peruses the text and references its methods, the purport of every chapter is carefully investigated. Furthermore, by examining the words according to the meridians, the merit of every character is clearly revealed. Doubts and obscurities are all known, deficiency and excess are comprehensively attached; transferring pain and stopping pain is like having divine assistance, achieving peace under the needle. For sudden acute diseases or deep-seated critical conditions, needling must not be mistaken.
Detailedly speaking, on Yin days, Blood is guided; when Yang Qi stays, warm needle therapy is applied. On Yang days, Qi is guided; encountering Yin Blood warmth, cold-dampness retention is secured/warmed. Deeply seeking the twelve primary meridians as the numerical basis, and the fifteen collaterals forming a cycle; the sixty Yin Shu points are governed by the Zang organs, and the seventy-two Yang points are collected by the Fu organs. When needling Yang meridians, horizontal insertion may be used; when draining blood collaterals, first use fingers to soften the area. Reverse is Ying (welcoming/opposing), Smooth is Sui (following); exhalation is Xie (draining/sedating), inhalation is Bu (tonifying). For shallow/new ailments, the reason for using needles is [this]; for lingering/chronic diseases, the reason for applying moxibustion is [this]. For restlessness and irritability where herbal medicine cannot save, Eight Hui (Meeting) points must be selected; for abscesses/swellings in Extraordinary Vessels storing pathogenic factors, Bian stone (lancet) therapy cures them.
Moreover, Gallbladder belongs to Jia Wood, Liver to Yi Wood; Ding Fire and Ren Water. "What generates me" is called Mother; "what I generate" is named Child. In Spring, Jing-Well points; in Summer, Ying-Spring points—these are for pathogens in the exterior. In Autumn, Jing-River points; in Winter, He-Sea points—these are for needling. Violating taboos causes disease recurrence; using days of decline makes it hard to resolve. Sun Luo (Sun Collaterals) are located in the muscle layers; blood flows out from branch collaterals. Dizziness/fainting from needle晕 (needle syncope): if meridians are deficient, tonifying collaterals is necessary; Pain indicates Excess, Itching indicates Deficiency; draining the Child point following the Mother point is the key finger technique.
Thinking of the sages' rapid efficacy, nothing surpasses acupuncture; modern people curing diseases, how could it be harder than medical practice? Xu Wenbo induced abortion via needling in Yuannei, which was very fast; Fan Jiusi treated throat issues in Jiangxia, rarely heard of.
Generally, ancient and modern remains are all emulated by later generations. Wang Zuan cured demons by needling and achieved health; the Otter doctor emerged from that. Qiu Fu treated ghostly afflictions and gained efficacy, sparing souls from sorrow. Having felt the subtleties of finger manipulation, using the true secrets of needling: apertures are detailed in bone, tendon, muscle, and flesh layers; needling essentials examine duration, newness, cold, and heat. Connecting Qi and unblocking meridians, length and shortness follow rules; internal and external blockages, emaciation and fullness must be distinguished. Do not needle after great labor, causing Qi chaos and spirit collapse; be cautious with breathing, preventing other needle-induced fainting and blood closure. Again, often seek ancient meanings, as there are hidden mechanisms; encountering high sages' true interests, one transcends and understands; meeting enlightened ones showing teachings, one manifests supporting crises. Male and female Qi pulses, moving and dividing, combining at times; calculating the "Nourishing Child" hours for point injection, points must follow current standards. Carefully determine suitable treatments for diseases, divine needle formulas; widely search secret texts of *Nan Jing* and *Su Wen*, deeply investigate the subtle insights of various families' elbow manuals. Thus it is called the *Zhiwei* (Subtle Indications) of Lujiang Flow and Distribution, serving as a model for later learners.
