The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The Gallbladder is the official of uprightness, from which decision-making arises. All eleven zang-fu organs depend on the Gallbladder for their decisions. The Gallbladder is referred to as the "Green Intestine." It is also said: The Gallbladder is the organ of purity and clarity.

While all other fu organs transmit turbid substances, the Gallbladder transmits nothing, hence it is called pure and clear. Deficiency leads to blurred vision; if vomiting injures the Gallbladder qi causing reversal, objects may appear inverted.

The Foot-Shaoyang Meridian begins at Tongziliao (GB1), with forty-four acupoints extending over a long path. Tinghui (GB2), Shangguan (GB3), and Hanyan (GB4) converge here; Xuanlu (GB5), Xuanli (GB6), and Qubin (GB7) rise high; Shuaigu (GB8), Tianchong (GB9), and Fu Bai (GB10) follow in sequence; Qiaoyin (GB11), Wanggu (GB12), and Benshen (GB13) invite each other; Yangbai (GB14), Zulinqi (GB15), and Mucuang (GB16) open up; Zhengying (GB17), Chengling (GB18), and Naokong (GB19) sway; Fengchi (GB20), Jianjing (GB21), and Yuanli (GB22) are distributed; Zhejin (GB23), Riyue (GB24), and Jingmen (GB25) serve as markers; Daimai (GB26), Wushu (GB27), and Weidao (GB28) continue; Juliao (GB29), Huantiao (GB30), and Fengshi (GB31) beckon; Zhongdu (GB32), Yangguan (GB33), and Yanglingquan (GB34) are located; Yangjiao (GB35), Waixiu (GB36), and Guangming (GB37) shine like nightfall; Yangfu (GB38), Xuanzhong (GB39), and Qiuxu (GB40) are external; Zulinqi (GB41), Diwu (GB42), and Xiaxi (GB43); ending at Qiaoyin (GB44) at the tip of the fourth toe (eighty-eight points on both sides).

This meridian starts at Tongziliao (GB1) and ends at Qiaoyin (GB44). Selecting Qiaoyin (GB44), Xiaxi (GB43), Zulinqi (GB41), Qiuxu (GB40), Yangfu (GB38), and Yanglingquan (GB34) corresponds to the Jing-River, Ying-Spring, Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source, Jing-River, and He-Sea points respectively.

The pulse originates at the outer canthus of the eye, ascends to the head corner, descends behind the ear, follows the neck, running anterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, reaches the shoulder, then crosses posterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, enters the supraclavicular fossa (Quepen). Its branch enters the ear from behind the ear, emerges anterior to the ear, and reaches the posterior aspect of the outer canthus; another branch separates from the outer canthus, descends to Daying (LI17), joins the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, reaches below Jiache (ST6), passes through the cheek, descends the neck, joins the supraclavicular fossa, descends into the chest, pierces the diaphragm, connects with the Liver, and belongs to the Gallbladder. It follows the interior of the hypochondrium, emerges at Qichong (ST30), surrounds the pubic region, and horizontally enters the hip joint. The straight course descends from the supraclavicular fossa under the axilla, follows the chest, passes through the lateral costal margin, and joins the hip joint below. It then follows the lateral thigh, emerges at the lateral edge of the knee, descends anterior to the fibula, goes straight down to the end of the fibular head (Juegu), emerges anterior to the lateral malleolus, follows the dorsum of the foot, and enters between the fourth and fifth toes. A branch from the dorsum of the foot enters the great toe, follows the interosseous space, emerges at its tip, returns to penetrate the nail bed, and emerges at the hair tuft. This meridian has abundant qi and little blood. At Zi hour (11 PM–1 AM), qi and blood flow into this fu organ associated with Jia Wood. It is palpated at the Guan pulse position. Gallbladder disease manifests as furrowed brows, bitter taste in the mouth, vomiting of old bile, frequent sighing, and fear as if being pursued. Excess patterns present with excess pulses and unsettled spirit, best treated by draining with Banxia Tang (Pinellia Decoction); deficiency patterns present with deficient pulses, restlessness, and insomnia, best treated by tonifying with Wendan Tang (Warming the Gallbladder Decoction). If Fire fails to descend, causing palpitations of the Heart and Gallbladder, use Fushen Chenxiang Wan (Poria and Agarwood Pill) mixed with honey, taken with Renshen Tang (Ginseng Decoction); for stroke, mania, or frightful palpitations, use pills made of Lead, Mercury, Cinnabar, and Cow's Milk, swallowed with well water. For sore throat and diaphragmatic congestion, use Xiao Shi (Niter), Can Chan (Cicada Slough), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis), Bo He (Mint), Pu Huang (Pollen Typhae), Nao Bing (Borneol), plus She Xiang (Musk) to complete the effect; for Gallbladder deficiency with fright during sleep, use Renshen (Ginseng), Huang Bai (Phellodendron), Gou Qi (Goji), Fu Shen (Poria), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange), and Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia) taken with wine for strength. To clear heat and widen the throat, use Bo He (Mint), Su Sha Ren (Villous Amomum Seed), Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome), and Pian Nao (Borneol); to calm fright and soothe the Gallbladder, use Renshen (Ginseng), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed), Niu Nai (Cow's Milk), and Chen Sha (Cinnabar). For confusion of the spirit, remember the excellent prescription of the Scholar; for wind-induced pain, use the secret powder of the Cultivator. For Gallbladder deficiency-cold causing insomnia, decoct Chao Suan Zao Ren (Fried Ziziphus Seed) with Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf); for Gallbladder excess-heat causing excessive sleepiness, mix Sheng Zao Ren (Raw Ziziphus Seed) powder with Ginger Tea. Tonification uses Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed) and fried Suan Zao Ren; purgation requires Qing Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), and Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix). For warming methods, use Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber), and Ju Hong (Tangerine Pith); for cooling methods, add Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), and Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower). Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root) and Chuan Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome) act as guiding herbs ascending without deviation; Qing Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel) and Che Qian (Plantago Seed) guide the meridian downward without doubt. Herbs have raw and processed forms, selected according to the pulse; dosages should be balanced according to symptoms. If severe diseases persist, rely on acupuncture and moxibustion to achieve results.
