Swelling and pain in the lower abdomen, inability to urinate, with pathogenic factors affecting the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and Qi constraint, select the large collateral of Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian; observe the knotted collaterals and the small knotted collaterals of Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian for blood stasis, and bleed if present; if the swelling extends upward to the epigastrium, select Zusanli (ST36).
Disease of the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) presents with abdominal distension and Qi fullness, with the lower abdomen being particularly hard, inability to urinate, distress and urgency; overflow leads to edema, while retention leads to distension. The sign is found in the large collateral outside Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, which lies between Taiyang and Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridians, and may also be seen in pulse diagnosis; treat by selecting Weizhong (BL40).
Disease of the Bladder presents with unilateral swelling and pain in the lower abdomen; pressing with hand induces the urge to urinate but results in failure; heat above the eyebrows (another version reads shoulder); if the pulse is sunken and there is local distension, coldness between the thighs; puncture the waist and thigh areas, apply multiple needles and moxibustion until deep warmth is felt, then the disease resolves. Fullness and enlargement of the lower abdomen, moving upward to the chest and heart, with alternating chills and fever, and difficulty in urination; treat by selecting Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian points.
Baoluan (Bladder torsion/spasm causing urinary retention) with lower abdominal fullness is primarily treated by Guanyuan (CV4). Difficulty in urination, water accumulation and distension, scanty urine output, and Baoluan preventing urination are primarily treated by Qugu (CV2).
Lower abdominal distension and urgency, difficulty in urination, with Jue Qi (Rebellious Qi) ascending to the vertex; primarily treated by Lougu (SP9). Difficulty and pain in urination, white turbidity, sudden hernia, lower abdominal swelling, coughing and reverse flow of Qi with vomiting, sudden jumping sensation in the Yin organs, low back pain preventing bending or straightening, dark complexion, heat, abdominal fullness, body heat, Jue pain; primarily treated by Xingjian (LR2). Lower abdominal fullness, heat constraint preventing urination; primarily treated by Zuwuli (LR11). Lower abdominal fullness (another version reads pain), difficulty in urination; primarily treated by Yongquan (KI1). Tendon tension with body heat, lower abdomen hard and swollen with intermittent fullness, difficulty in urination, coldness in the sacrum and thighs, Bi Shu (hip joint) pain radiating to the hypochondrium internally; primarily treated by Weizhong (BL40). Cold in the Yin organs and Bao (Uterus/Bladder), difficulty in urination; primarily treated by Chengfu (BL36).
Internal constraint preventing urination: puncture Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian and Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, using long needles on the upper part. For rebellious Qi, select Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. For severe Jue, select the active meridians of Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
Sanjiao constraint with obstruction of both stool and urine: primarily treated by Shuidao (ST28). Difficulty in defecation: primarily treated by Zhongzhu (TE3) and Taibai (SP3). Difficulty in defecation: primarily treated by Dazhong (KI4).
