When there is disease in the upper part of the body, if Yang Qi (vital energy associated with warmth and activity) is not raised, directly use the method of raising Yang to guide Qi to the upper part. If lower part diseases are treated continuously with descending methods, but sweating is needed in the upper part, raising Yang must be employed. If sweating is also required in the lower part, urgently apply the rubbing (Cuo), tonifying (Bu), and flicking (Tan) methods. Continuously using raising Yang combined with rubbing will harmonize the Qi flow between the upper and lower parts, and the illness will naturally resolve.
The next section discusses using Yang meridians for raising Yang, adding rubbing several times until the head feels full. Then, apply lowering Yin (Sheng Yin) two or three times, followed again by raising Yang while rubbing as Qi ascends. This should absolutely not be used for excess syndromes; for deficiency syndromes, if sweating is desired, it will occur spontaneously. For mixed excess-deficiency syndromes, use descending methods, clearly applying raising Yang and lowering Yin.
In the morning (before noon), Qi tends to ascend, so raise Yang. When shivering occurs on the left side, perform raising Yang with rubbing and refine the technique. For excess constitutions, lifting the needle by eight fen is effective; for deficiency constitutions, urgent pressing must be distinguished clearly.
For women before noon, lower Yin should be promoted. Urgently use lowering Yin to seek Qi ascending. Slight lifting and urgent pressing combined with rubbing and shivering techniques are used. As Qi rises and Yang moves, adjust the needle.
In the afternoon, raising Yang requires rubbing. When Qi descends, rubbing is used to achieve heat and harmony. Lifting and urgent application of descending Qi methods are employed, followed by lowering Yin to pass Blood and Qi.
For women in the afternoon, Qi should be directed upward. Lower Yin with clockwise rotation for massage. Then apply urgent pressing, lifting, and shivering techniques. Three counter-clockwise rotations bring harmony.
During Li Dong (Start of Winter), when cold is prevalent and acupuncture is performed, urgently apply lowering Yin one or two times. Frequent rubbing generates internal heat, opening Yang Qi so that Qi intersects naturally.
During wind and rain, acupuncture requires rubbing. Urgently apply rubbing to increase Yang Qi. Frequent rubbing makes one resistant to wind and cold, allowing Yang Qi to circulate and the illness to harmonize.
At dusk/evening, acupuncture involves twice raising Yang. Raising Yang three times stabilizes Qi upward. In the evening, avoid draining Blood for various illnesses; weak patients with strong Yang find healing difficult.
To induce sweating on the left side, urgently raise Yang, then again apply raising Yang and pressing auspiciously. For the right side without sweat, use the raising Yang method, followed by this method with holding breath (Ting Hu). Hold breath thirty times, then urgently rub the left side. For the right side without sweat, use pressing methods. On the left, slightly use descending Qi methods; on the right, press thoroughly before withdrawing the needle.
If a patient has had Taiyang Cold Damage (Shanghan) for several days without sweating and presents with heat, first lower Yin then raise Yang. Add rubbing dozens of times, lift and extract to induce sweating, leaving the body cool. If the body is cool but sweating continues, continuously rub, press urgently, and hold breath for a long time. Then urgently press one or two more times; when sweat dries naturally, the illness recovers.
For vomiting induced by Shanghan, start with raising Yang, then follow with rising Qi once. Then apply descending Qi combined with rubbing. Shake horizontally and vertically to facilitate vomiting. Afterwards, raise Yang and let Qi rise. For urgent vomiting, use horizontal shaking and lifting/extraction. Seven lifts and extractions produce seven mouthfuls of vomit. Withdraw the needle and regulate breathing to perfection.
