Heaven's energy is insufficient in the northwest; therefore, the northwest belongs to Yin, and a person's right ear and eye are not as acute as the left. Earth's form is incomplete in the southeast; therefore, the southeast belongs to Yang, and a person's left hand and foot are not as strong as the right. The East belongs to Yang; the essence of Yang gathers upward. When it gathers upward, the upper part becomes clear and bright while the lower part becomes deficient. Thus, the ears and eyes are sharp, but the hands and feet are inconvenient. The West belongs to Yin; the essence of Yin gathers downward. When it gathers downward, the lower part becomes abundant while the upper part becomes deficient. Thus, the ears and eyes are not sharp, but the hands and feet are convenient. If both sides are affected by pathogenic factors, those affecting the upper part will be more severe on the right, and those affecting the lower part will be more severe on the left. This is where Heaven and Earth's Yin and Yang cannot be complete, so pathogens reside there. Heaven has essence, Earth has form; Heaven has eight seasonal markers, Earth has five regions; thus, they can serve as the parents of all things. Clear Yang ascends to Heaven, turbid Yin descends to Earth. Therefore, the movement and stillness of Heaven and Earth are the guidelines for divine spirit, enabling growth, flourishing, harvesting, and storage, ending and beginning again. Only the wise emulate Heaven above to nourish the head, emulate Earth below to nourish the feet, and follow human affairs in the middle to nourish the Zang organs (solid organs). Heavenly Qi connects with the Lung (Fei), Earthly Qi connects with the throat (Yi), Wind Qi connects with the Liver (Gan), Thunder Qi connects with the Heart (Xin), Grain Qi connects with the Spleen (Pi), and Rain Qi connects with the Kidney (Shen). The Six Channels (Liu Jing) are like rivers, the stomach and intestines are like seas, and the nine orifices are the passages for water Qi, using Heaven and Earth to correspond to the body's Yin and Yang. The sweat of Yang Qi is clarified by the rain of Heaven and Earth; the Qi movement of Yang is named after the swift wind of Heaven and Earth; violent winds resemble Thunder Qi; rebellious Qi resembles Yang Qi. Therefore, if treatment does not follow the laws of Heaven or utilize the principles of Earth, disasters will arrive. Thus, the arrival of pathogenic winds is as rapid as wind and rain. Therefore, a skilled healer treats at the level of the skin and hair first; next, at the level of muscle and skin; next, at the level of tendons and vessels; next, at the level of the Fu organs (hollow organs); next, at the level of the Zang organs. To treat the Zang organs means half death and half life. Thus, Heavenly pathogenic Qi harming the Zang organs, cold and heat from food and drink harming the Fu organs, and Dampness from Earth harming the skin, flesh, tendons, and vessels. Therefore, one skilled in acupuncture guides Yang from Yin, guides Yin from Yang, treats the left side via the right, treats the right side via the left, knows the other through oneself, knows the interior through the exterior, observes the principles of excess and deficiency, sees subtle signs to detect errors, and uses this without peril.
