The Yellow Emperor said: When the human body is deficient, the Shen (Spirit) wanders and loses its position, allowing external ghosts and evils to invade, leading to premature death. How can one preserve the Zhen Qi (True Qi)? I wish to hear the methods of acupuncture. Qibo said: Your question is most illuminating! The wandering of the Shen and loss of its position, although manifested in the physical body, does not necessarily lead to death immediately; it is only when evil pathogens interfere that premature death or shortened lifespan occurs. For instance, if the Jueyin Liver channel loses its position, and the heavenly qi is deficient, causing a deficiency in the human Liver qi, the double deficiency induced by heaven leads to the Hun (Ethereal Soul) wandering upwards. When evil invades the Jueyin, if the body remains warm, acupuncture can still be applied. First, needle the passing points of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel, then needle the Back-Shu point of the Liver. If a person suffers from Heart deficiency and encounters the failure of the Sovereign Fire and Ministerial Fire to govern the year, resulting in triple deficiency due to fire insufficiency, the Black Corpse Ghost (representing Cold-Water evil) may invade, causing sudden death. One may needle the passing points of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Channel, and subsequently needle the Back-Shu point of the Heart. If a person suffers from Spleen disease and encounters the failure of the Taiyin Earth to govern, resulting in triple deficiency and earth insufficiency, the Green Corpse Ghost (representing Wind-Wood evil) may invade, causing sudden death. One may needle the passing points of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Channel, and subsequently needle the Back-Shu point of the Spleen. If a person suffers from Lung disease and encounters the failure of the Yangming Metal to govern, resulting in triple deficiency and metal insufficiency, the Red Corpse Ghost (representing Fire-Heat evil) may invade, causing sudden death. One may needle the passing points of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Channel, and subsequently needle the Back-Shu point of the Lung. If a person suffers from Kidney disease and encounters the failure of the Taiyin Water to govern, resulting in triple deficiency in a year of Wood insufficiency, the Yellow Corpse Ghost (representing Damp-Earth evil) may invade the righteous qi, absorbing the Hun and Po (Corporeal Soul), leading to sudden death. One may needle the passing points of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel, and subsequently needle the Back-Shu point of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Channel.
The Yellow Emperor said: The twelve zang-fu organs assist each other. If the Shen loses its position, the spiritual radiance cannot become complete, and there is fear of invasion by evil pathogens. Treatment involves acupuncture; I wish to hear the essentials. Qibo said: Your inquiry is most thorough! This is the ultimate principle, the Dao, and the true doctrine. Only a sage emperor could investigate this source. This is called the Qi and Shen merging with the Dao, aligning with the signs of Heaven. The Heart is the Official of the Monarch, from which Shen Ming (Spiritual Illumination) emerges; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Channel. The Lung is the Official of the Chancellor, from which Zhi Jie (Regulation) emerges; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Channel. The Liver is the Official of the General, from which Mou Lü (Strategizing) emerges; one may regulate the Yuan-Source point of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Channel. The Gallbladder is the Official of Integrity, from which Jue Duan (Decision-making) emerges; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel. The Dan Zhong (Chest Center/Pericardium) is the Official of the Envoy, from which Xi Le (Joy and Delight) emerges; one may needle the Ying-Spring point of the Pericardium. The Spleen is the Official of Remonstrance, from which Zhi Zhou (Wisdom encompassing all things) emerges; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Spleen Channel. The Stomach is the Official of the Granary, from which Wu Wei (Five Flavors) emerge; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Stomach Channel. The Large Intestine is the Official of Transmission, from which Bian Hua (Transformation) emerges; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Large Intestine Channel. The Small Intestine is the Official of Reception, from which Hua Wu (Transformation of substances) emerges; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Small Intestine Channel. The Kidney is the Official of Strength, from which Ji Qiao (Skill and Ingenuity) emerges; one may needle the Yuan-Source point of the Kidney Channel. The Sanjiao (Triple Burner) is the Official of Irrigation, from which Shui Dao (Water pathways) emerge; needle the Yuan-Source point of the Sanjiao Channel. The Bladder is the Official of the Capital, storing Jing Ye (Essence and Fluids); only through Qi Hua (Qi transformation) can they be excreted; needle the Yuan-Source point of the Bladder Channel. These twelve officials must not lose their harmony. Therefore, the method of acupuncture contains the principles of preserving Shen and nourishing Zhen, as well as the path of cultivating the True. It is not merely for treating diseases; thus, the key lies in cultivation to harmonize the Shen.
