Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian
The Foot Taiyin Splein Meridian originates at the tip of the great toe. It follows the medial white flesh margin (the junction of skin and muscle) of the toe, passes posterior to the nuclear bone (commonly known as the "lone turn bone," referring to the base of the first metatarsal), and ascends to the anterior border of the medial malleolus.
It then ascends into the medial aspect of the lower leg, running posterior to the tibia (referring to the medial aspect of the tibia near the gastrocnemius region). At the point Sanyinjiao (SP6), it intersects with the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Ascending from Sanyinjiao, it passes through the point Lugou (SP7) posterior to the tibia, travels upward two cun, emerges anterior to the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, and reaches the points Diji (SP8) and Yinlingquan (SP9).
Continuing upward along the anterior medial border of the knee and thigh, it enters the abdomen, connects with the Spleen Zang-organ, and links with the Stomach Fu-organ.
The inner thigh is called the "thigh" (Bi); the area above and below the navel is called the "abdomen." From Yinlingquan (SP9), following the anterior medial border of the knee and thigh through Xuehai (SP10) and Jimen (SP11), it winds into the abdomen, passing through Chongmen (SP12) and Fushhe (SP13), reaching the vicinity of Zhongwan (CV12) and Xiawan (CV10), thereby connecting with the Spleen and linking with the Stomach.
Ascending through the diaphragm, it runs alongside the pharynx, connects with the root of the tongue, and scatters beneath the tongue.
The pharynx is the passage for swallowing food, located anterior to the larynx, with a length of one chi six cun, known as the gastric connection. The "root of the tongue" (Sheben) refers to the base of the tongue. From Fuai (SP14), ascending through the diaphragm, it follows the interior of the esophagus, flanks the throat, connects with the root of the tongue, and terminates by scattering beneath the tongue.
A branch separates from the stomach, ascends through the diaphragm, and pours into the Heart.
This branch diverges from Fuai (SP14), ascends through the diaphragm lateral to the Zhongwan (CV12) point in the stomach region, pours into the interior of Danzhong (CV17) within the domain of the Heart, and connects with the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian.
This meridian has abundant Qi and scarce Blood. Its Qi and Blood flow into it during the Si hour (9:00–11:00 AM). There are twenty-one acupoints on this meridian, totaling forty-two points bilaterally.
Yinbai (SP1): Located at the medial end of the great toe, approximately the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the nail. It is the Jing-Well point where the Spleen meridian emerges, belonging to Wood. *Suwen* notes: needle 1 fen deep, retain for three breaths. Indications include sudden syncope (Zu Shi Jue) with loss of consciousness, cold feet that cannot be warmed, prolonged menstrual bleeding in women, infantile fright (Ke Wu), and slow convulsions.
Dadu (SP2): Located in the depression medial to the first metatarsophalangeal joint, at the junction of red and white flesh along the bone crease. It is the Ying-Spring point where the Spleen meridian flows, belonging to Fire. Tonify this point for Spleen deficiency. *Tongren* records indications including rebellious Qi, vertigo, low back pain with inability to bend or extend, perimalleolar wind, Stomach-type Heart pain, abdominal distension and chest fullness, heartworm pain, and infantile fright.
Taibai (SP3): Located on the medial side of the great toe, in the depression anterior to the medial malleolus and inferior to the nuclear bone. It is the Shu-Stream point where the Spleen meridian pours, belonging to Earth. *Tongren* records: needle 3 fen deep, moxa 3 moxibustion cones. Indications include soreness and spasms in the thighs and legs, heavy body and bone pain, Stomach-type Heart pain, abdominal distension and chest fullness, and Heart pain with a slow pulse.
Gongsun (SP4): Located one cun posterior to the first metatarsophalangeal joint, anterior to the medial malleolus. It is the Luo-Connecting point of the Spleen, which diverges to connect with the Yangming Stomach Meridian. *Tongren* records: needle 4 fen deep, moxa 3 moxibustion cones. Indications include polydipsia and Gallbladder deficiency. If rebellious Qi ascends, it causes Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome); if Excess, there is cutting pain in the intestines—drain this point; if Deficiency, there is drum-like distension—tonify this point.
Shangqiu (SP5): Located in the slight depression anterior to the inferior aspect of the medial malleolus. It is the Jing-River point where the Spleen meridian travels, belonging to Metal. Drain this point for Spleen Excess. *Tongren* records: moxa 3 moxibustion cones, needle 3 fen deep. Indications include abdominal pain, epilepsy, alternating chills and fever with frequent vomiting, pain in the inner thigh, Qi abscess, wandering hernia (Hu Hernia) moving up and down, radiating pain to the lower abdomen, inability to bend or extend, Spleen accumulation and痞气 (mass), jaundice, stiffness and pain of the tongue root, epigastric pain, abdominal distension, cold malaria, loose stools like water, yellow complexion, excessive thinking, altered taste sensation, indigestion, heavy body and joint pain, lethargy and desire to sleep, infertility in women, and infantile slow convulsions.
Sanyinjiao (SP6): Located three cun directly above the tip of the medial malleolus, in the depression posterior to the tibia. It is the intersection of the Foot Taiyin Spleen, Foot Shaoyin Kidney, and Foot Jueyin Liver meridians. *Tongren* records: needle 3 fen deep, moxa 3 moxibustion cones. Indications include Spleen disorders, pain at the medial knee, difficult urination, penile pain, foot ataxia, hernia, urinary incontinence, Gallbladder deficiency, vomiting water after eating, nocturnal emission in dreams, Huoluan with cold extremities, yawning leading to dislocation of the Jiache joint, inability to close the mouth, male penile pain, activation of Yuan Qi, unbearable pain below the umbilicus, infantile fright, emaciation in women due to intercourse during menstruation, mass formations, continuous leakage of blood, menorrhagia, fetal movement during pregnancy, breech presentation, postpartum retention of lochia, excessive blood loss, bloody collapse with fainting and unconsciousness. If the meridians are blocked, draining this point will immediately unblock them; if the meridians are deficient and sluggish, tonifying this point will strengthen them. According to Song Dynasty records, when a Crown Prince encountered a pregnant woman, he diagnosed a female fetus. Xu Wenbo predicted a boy and a girl. Impatient, the Prince wished to verify. Wenbo drained Sanyinjiao and tonified Hegu (LI4) to induce abortion. Can we not now tonify Sanyinjiao and drain Hegu to secure the pregnancy? Sanyinjiao is the intersection of the Kidney, Liver, and Spleen meridians, governing Yin Blood, which should be tonified, not drained. Hegu is the Yuan-Source point of the Large Intestine, which is the Fu-organ of the Lung and governs Qi, which should be drained, not tonified. Wenbo’s method drained Blood and strengthened Qi. Our method strengthens Blood and drains Qi. Thus, Liu Yuanbin stated: "When Blood is weak and Qi is strong, pregnancy is impossible; when Blood is strong and Qi is weak, pregnancy exists."
Lugou (SP7) (also known as Taiyin Luo): Located six cun above the medial malleolus, in the depression posterior to the tibia. *Tongren* records: needle 3 fen deep, moxa 3 moxibustion cones. Indications include borborygmus, forced stretching/yawning, sadness, rebellious Qi, acute abdominal distension, cold masses, failure of food and drink to nourish the body, knee bi-syndrome with inability to walk.
Diji (SP8) (also known as She): Located five cun below the knee, in the depression inferior to the medial condyle of the tibia, taken with the leg extended. It is the Xi-Cleft point of the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Indications include insufficiency of Essence, uterine masses in women feeling like hot water poured from the inner thigh to the knee.
Yinlingquan (SP9): Located in the depression inferior to the medial condyle of the tibia below the knee, taken with the leg extended or flexed. It is opposite Yanglingquan (GB34). It is the He-Sea point where the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian enters. Indications include difficulty bending and extending, Huoluan, hernia and masses, involuntary urination, difficult urination, Qi strangury, irregular chills and fever, genital pain, heat in the chest, sudden diarrhea with undigested food.
Xuehai (SP10): Located two and a half cun superior to the medial border of the patella, at the junction of white flesh. *Tongren* records: needle 5 fen deep, moxa 3 moxibustion cones. Indications include rebellious Qi and abdominal distension, leakage of bad blood in women, irregular menstruation, and physical emaciation due to overwork. For those with chronic Qi deficiency, moxa seven cones on the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian.

Alternatively described as arising between tendons in the thigh. *Tongren* records: moxa 3 moxibustion cones. Indications include strangury with urinary obstruction, enuresis, and painful swelling of the inguinal region.
Chongmen (SP12) (also known as Shangci Gong): Located five cun lateral to Daheng (SP15), below Fushhe (SP13), at the arterial pulse in the crease between the ends of the Henggu bone, four and a half cun from the midline of the abdomen. *Tongren* records indications of dyspnea and inability to catch breath.
Fushhe (SP14): Located three cun below Fujie (SP16), four and a half cun lateral to the midline of the abdomen. It is the intersection of the Foot Jueyin Liver, Foot Taiyin Spleen, and Yinwei Vessels. The three meridians enter the abdomen sequentially. Indications include bi-pain, abdominal fullness rushing to the heart, accumulations, and Huoluan.

Indications include chest and hypochondriac fullness preventing bending and extending, inability to swallow, preference for drinking, coughing up thick pus, cough, and rebellious Qi. ("Yin" here is likely a typo for "tuò" [spitting]).
Dabao (SP21): Located three cun below Yuanli (GB22), distributed in the chest and hypochondrium, emerging from the space between the ninth ribs. It is the Great Luo of the Spleen, commanding all Yin and Yang collaterals, irrigating the Five Zang-organs via the Spleen. *Tongren* records: moxa 3 moxibustion cones, needle 3 fen deep. Indications include pain in the chest and hypochondrium, wheezing. In Excess, the whole body aches—drain this point; in Deficiency, all joints become lax—tonify this point.
Diagram of the Heart
The Heart weighs twelve liang. It attaches to the fifth thoracic vertebra of the spine, located below the Lungs and above the Diaphragm. It contains seven holes and three hairs (some say only those of supreme wisdom possess these). Its shape resembles an unopened lotus flower.
The South corresponds to the color Red, entering and connecting with the Heart. It opens into the ears (technically the tongue, but since the tongue is not considered an orifice in this context, the ears are mentioned). It stores Essence in the Heart; thus, diseases manifest in the Five Zang-organs. Its number is seven, its odor is scorched, its flavor is bitter, its sound is speech, and its fluid is sweat.
The South generates Heat; Heat generates Fire; Fire generates Bitterness; Bitterness generates the Heart; the Heart generates Blood; Blood generates the Spleen. The Heart governs the tongue. In Heaven, it is Heat; in Earth, it is Fire. In Emotion, it is Joy. Joy injures the Heart; Fear overcomes Joy. Bitterness injures Qi; Salt overcomes Bitterness. The Heart is the Sovereign Official, from whom Shen (Spirit/Mind) emerges.
The Heart is the root of life and the transformation of Shen. Its brilliance manifests in the face, and its substance fills the Mai (Vessels). It is the Taiyang (Greater Yang) among Yang, corresponding to the Summer Qi. The Heart’s partnership is with the Mai (Vessels). Dreams of burning. (During the three months of Summer) The Heart color is Red; it desires to look like crimson silk wrapping cinnabar (lustrous and hidden), not like ochre (dull and dark). [From *Suwen*]
Why are the Five Zang-organs generally equal in position, yet the Lung alone is above the Diaphragm? The answer is: The Heart governs Blood, and the Lung governs Qi. Blood is Ying (Nutritive), and Qi is Wei (Defensive). They accompany each other up and down, called Ying and Wei. They circulate through the channels, and Ying circulates throughout the body. Therefore, the Heart and Lung are located above the Diaphragm.
Master Chen said: The Heart and Lung can generate the human body through Blood and Qi; thus, this body is their offspring. Parents are honored and ought to reside above. Therefore, above the diaphragm... Blood dies first, worsens on Ren days, and dies on Gui days.
