Fourteen Acupoints on the Second Row of the Recumbent Position, Left and Right
Qucha (BL5) [Qucha (BL5), Curved Difference]: Two acupoints. Located one-and-a-half cun lateral to Shenting (GV24) [Shenting (GV24), Spirit Pavilion], entering the hairline. Needle depth: 0.3 cun; Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones.
Wuzhu (BL8) [Wuzhu (BL8), Five Places]: Two acupoints. Located one-and-a-half cun lateral to Shangxing (GV23) [Shangxing (GV23), Upper Star]. Needle depth: 0.3 cun; Retain needle for seven breaths; Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. The *Mingtang* [Mingtang, Hall of Light (a classical acupuncture text)] states that five moxa cones are the limit.
Chenguang (BL9) [Chenguang (BL9), Inherited Light]: Two acupoints. Located one-and-a-half cun posterior to Wuzhu (BL8). Needle depth: 0.3 cun; Moxibustion is prohibited. Contraindications are the same as above. The *Mingtang* states it is two cun posterior to Wuzhu. Wang Bing’s commentary on the *Suwen* [Suwen, Basic Questions of the Yellow Emperor (a classic TCM text)] states it is one cun.
Tongtian (BL7) [Tongtian (BL7), Connecting Heaven]: Two acupoints. Located one-and-a-half cun posterior to Chenguang (BL9). Needle depth: 0.3 cun; Retain needle for seven breaths; Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones.
Luque (BL6) [Luque (BL6), Blocking Evil]: Also known as Qiangyang (Strong Yang) or Naogai (Brain Cover). Located one-and-a-half cun posterior to Tongtian (BL7). Moxibustion: 3 moxa cones. Wang Bing’s commentary on the *Suwen* states: Needle 0.3 cun; retain needle for five breaths.
Yuzhen (BL9) [Yuzhen (BL9), Jade Pillow]: Two acupoints. Located one-and-a-half cun posterior to Luque (BL6). (The *Mingtang* Upper and Lower Classics state: 0.75 cun.) Located one-and-a-third cun lateral to Naohu (GV17) [Naohu (GV17), Brain Door] (which is located one-and-a-half cun posterior to Jiangjian (GV19)). It originates from the Rouchen bone, entering the hairline three cun above. Moxibustion: 2 moxa cones. The *Mingtang* states: Needle 0.3 cun. Wang Bing’s commentary on the *Suwen* states: retain needle for three breaths. The *Jiayi Jing* [Jiayi Jing, Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion] states: 0.2 cun. The *Tongren* [Tongren, Copper Man Manual] states: Yuzhen is one-and-a-half cun posterior to Luque. Both the Upper and Lower *Mingtang* classics state 0.75 cun. If the *Tongren* is considered erroneous, then the other acupoints of the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian would also be consistent with this error. If the *Mingtang* is considered erroneous, it is unlikely that both the Upper and Lower Classics would be wrong simultaneously. (The small edition of the *Mingtang* agrees.) I have examined Wang Bing’s commentary on the *Suwen*, which states that Yuzhen is seven fen posterior to Luque. This is not far from the 0.75 cun stated in the *Mingtang*. Therefore, the *Suwen* should be taken as the standard. However, since the two Yuzhen acupoints flank Naohu, they should not be only seven fen short, leading to...
Tianzhu (BL10) [Tianzhu (BL10), Heavenly Pillar]: Two acupoints. Located in the depression lateral to the large tendons at the posterior hairline of the neck. Needle depth: 0.5 cun. Upon obtaining Deqi [Deqi, Arrival of Qi (acupuncture sensation)], apply draining method immediately. The *Mingtang* states: 0.2 cun; retain needle for three breaths; draining method coordinated with five inhalations. Moxibustion is less effective than needling. One may moxa daily from 7 to 105 cones. Contraindications are the same as above. The following text states: 3 moxa cones. Wang Bing’s commentary on the *Suwen* states: needle 0.2 cun.
Meichong (BL1) [Meichong (BL1), Eyebrow Rushing]: Also known as Xiaozhu (Small Bamboo). Located directly above the inner ends of the eyebrows, entering the hairline. Treats five types of eye epilepsy, headache, nasal congestion, etc. Do not moxa. Needling depth: 0.3 cun.
The *Mingtang Shangjing* [Mingtang Shangjing, Upper Classic of the Hall of Light] includes the Meichong acupoint, whereas the *Tongren* does not. This acupoint cannot be discarded for treating eye disorders, five types of epilepsy, headache, nasal congestion, and other diseases. Since its location is close to Qucha (BL5), it is appended here.
