Tianjing (TE10) governs shoulder pain. It treats flaccidity and bi-syndrome with insensibility (numbness). The limbs cannot flex or extend. There is numbness of the shoulder muscles. Quyu (SI9) governs bi-syndrome around the scapula. Jianzhen (SI9), Jiangchong (an extra point), and Tianliao (SI15) govern heat in the shoulder. The head cannot look back. Quchi (LI11) and Tianliao (SI15) govern heavy, painful shoulders that cannot be raised. Qinglengquan (GB24) (identical to Ming Tang records) and Yanggu (SI5) govern the inability to raise the shoulder. One cannot fasten clothing straps. Tianjing (TE10) treats elbow pain radiating to the shoulder, with inability to flex or extend. (See Elbow section). Jianwaishu (SI14) treats shoulder bi-syndrome. Quyu (SI9) treats shoulder pain caused by periarthritis around the shoulder. (Also see Shoulder and Back section).
Cold and pain in both shoulder heads should not be neglected. I have often seen patients about to suffer a stroke whose arm bones are dislocated and disconnected from the shoulder joint. Many cases do not heal after treatment. In summary, one should massage it with the palm of the hand. At night during sleep, cover it with many blankets. This only prevents coldness. Later, moxibustion on Jianjing (GB21) prevented this affliction. For Jianjing (GB21) concerns the safety of both hands. Huantiao (GB30) concerns the safety of both feet. Moxibustion on these points is indispensable.
Quchi (LI11) treats thinning (atrophy) of the elbow and arm. (Ming Tang records under Elbow). Jianliao (SJ14) treats arms that are thin, weak, sore, and painful. The arms are cold and flaccid. (Ming Tang records). Binao (LI14) and Jianjing (GB21) treat arms that are thin and weak. The hands cannot reach the head. Shaohai (HT3) (see Scrofula section), Rugen (ST18), and Tinggong (SI19) treat arm pain. Zhongzhu (TE3), Kongzui (LU6), and Zhouliao (SI10) treat sore and painful elbows and arms. (See Elbow Pain section). Jianshi (PC5) treats swollen and painful arms with difficulty in flexion and extension. (Lower section). Jianjing (GB21) treats heavy shoulders that cannot be raised and arm pain. Biangu (another name for Jianliao SJ14) treats heat in the shoulder and pain in the fingers and arms. Rugen (ST18) treats arm swelling. (Tongren records). Taiyuan (LU9) treats pain on the medial aspect of the arm. Juliao (GB29) treats lower back pain radiating to the hypochondrium. Shoulder pain radiating to the chest and arms with spasm and urgency. The arms cannot be raised to the shoulder level. Binao (LI14) (see Scrofula section), Zhouliao (SI10) treat arm pain with inability to raise. (See Elbow section). Tinggong (SI19) treats arm pain. Kongzui (LU6) treats arm jue-pain. Needling is permissible. Yanggu (SI5) treats pain on the lateral side of the wrist and arm with inability to raise. Yemen (extra point) (see Sore Throat section), Qiangu (SI2) treat inability to raise the arms. Yangchi (TE4) treats inability to grasp objects due to wrist fracture. It also treats shoulder and arm pain with inability to raise. Jiquan (HT1) treats jue-cold in the arms and elbows.
Qinglengyuan (SI11) treats inability to raise the shoulder and arm due to cold qi, making it impossible to fasten clothing. Yanglao (SI5) treats the sensation that the shoulder is about to break, and arm pain as if being pulled out. (Ming Tang Vol. 2 writes "hand" instead of "arm"). Jianjing (GB21) treats soreness and weakness in the arms. (See Shoulder Pain section). Zhangmen (LR13) treats jue-ni. It treats inability to raise the shoulder and arms. Jugu (SI10) treats pain in the shoulder and arms with inability to flex and extend. (See Shoulder Pain section). [Missing Character] hui treats arm pain with inability to raise, accompanied by qi swelling and spasmodic pain. Jianjing (GB21) treats spasticity and urgency in the arms. (See Hemiplegia section). Chize (LU5) and Jianzhen (SI9) treat wind-bi syndrome causing inability to raise the arms. Hegu (LI4) treats flaccidity of the arms. Yangxi (LI5) treats inability to raise the arms. (See Elbow section). Tiantong (SI11), Wuli (LI31), etc., treat arm pain. Houxi (SI3) treats arm urgency. Xiaoyin (GB44), etc., and Wanggu (SI4) treat inability to extend the arms. Fufen (BL17) treats insensibility in the arms. (Also see Elbow section). Jugu (SI10) and Qiangu (SI2) govern inability to raise the arms. Chize (LU5), Chongguan (extra point), Waiguan (TE5), and Xiaoyin (GB44) govern inability to raise the arms above the head. Qianye (extra point) governs arm spasticity and inability to raise the hands. Shenmen (HT7) and Shaohai (HT3) govern arm spasticity, with a sallow complexion, loss of essence due to labor and qi deficiency, and shoulder/arm pain preventing raising the hands above the head.
