Shenshu (BL23, Kidney Shu) treats chronic coldness of the Water Organ (Kidney) due to Kidney Deficiency. (*Tongren* records its use for exhaustion; *Mingtang* records the same.) Zhonglvyu (BL27, Middle Spine Shu) treats Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome) caused by Kidney Deficiency. (See "Thirst" section.) Yangqiao (GB59, Yang Qiao Mai) treats insufficiency of Kidney Qi. (*Mingtang* records this.) Xialian (ST34, Lower Frontier Sea) treats insufficiency of Small Intestine Qi. The complexion lacks luster. Moxibustion treats Small Intestine Qi disorder and Pi Masses. Upon onset, abdominal pain is unbearable, like being stabbed with a knife. It also treats blood and Qi stagnation masses in the fundamental organs of women, characterized by wandering stabbing pain. Patients may be unable to sit or lie down comfortably, or experience obstruction of urination and defecation, along with an appetite but inability to eat. Apply ten moxa cones at the center of the first interphalangeal joint crease on both the left and right second toes. Each cone should be the size of a red bean. This is highly effective. (*Jixiao Fang* records this. Another version states: it treats cold-type Huangchang Qi attacks, causing severe pain radiating to the external genitals, with swelling and hardness like stone.)
There are many formulas for treating Small Intestine Qi disorders, but not all are effective. *Duoming San* by Qi Yu and *Liangfang Cangcu San* are both proven effective through trial. A soldier suffered from Small Intestine Qi disorder. Following this method, he received five moxa cones applied below the second toe. His symptoms alleviated slightly but recurred. I suspected the number of cones was insufficient. I administered ten pills of Zhenling Dan to him, instructing him to take five pills morning and evening, which led to his recovery. Although moxibustion acts faster than herbs, if acupoints are not accurately located, it is less effective than appropriate herbal prescriptions. Combining moxibustion with herbal medicine is the proper approach.
Recently, a formula called "Lisheng San" has circulated. It consists of seven whole dried Scorpions (*Scorpio*), thirty-seven Fructus Amomi Rotundus (*Suazhen Ren*), and one qian of stir-fried Fennel Fruit (*Huixiang*), ground into powder. Divide into three doses. Take with warm wine, including the dregs, on an empty stomach. This disease arises from heat accumulating in the Small Intestine, failing to disperse, and persisting over time to become pathology. Taking this formula yields immediate results. Although I have not personally tested it, its rationale is sound, so I record it here. A young scholar sought moxibustion treatment for nocturnal emissions. When I pressed the Shenshu point, he felt soreness and pain, so I instructed him to apply moxibustion there, resulting in his cure. This demonstrates that regardless of age, Kidney Qi can be deficient. The ancients said, "All diseases arise from the Heart." They also said, "All diseases arise from the Kidney." Everyone knows that mental labor generates various diseases, but few realize that Kidney deficiency also generates various diseases. Heaven generates Water as One, Earth generates Fire as Two. If Kidney Water fails to ascend, Heart Fire cannot descend. This is how such diseases originate. One must nourish the Heart and protect the Kidneys.
