Twenty-two Acupoints of the Foot-Taiyin Splein Meridian on Both Sides
Yinbai (SP1), bilateral. Element: Wood. Located in the depression medial to the corner of the toenail of the great toe, approximately the width of a leek leaf from the nail angle. Needle depth: 0.3 cun. Note attached: For women with prolonged menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), needling this point can cure it immediately. Ming dynasty physicians state: Needle depth 0.1 cun, retain needles for three respiratory cycles, moxibustion 3 cones.
Dadu (SP2), bilateral. Element: Fire. Located in the depression distal to the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Moxibustion 3 cones, needle depth 0.3 cun. Qian’s commentary states: At the junction of white skin on the medial side of this joint.
Taibai (SP3), bilateral. Element: Earth. Located in the depression below the medial malleolus bone (specifically the first metatarsal head) on the medial aspect of the foot. Moxibustion 3 cones, needle depth 0.3 cun. Qian states: On the medial side of the great toe.
Gongsun (SP4), bilateral. Located one cun posterior to the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Moxibustion 3 cones, needle depth 0.4 cun.
Shangqiu (SP5), bilateral. Element: Metal. Located in the slight depression anterior and inferior to the medial malleolus. Moxibustion 3 cones, needle depth 0.3 cun.
Sanyinjiao (SP6), bilateral. Located in the depression below the tibia, three cun superior to the tip of the medial malleolus. (Ming physicians state: In the depression eight cun superior to the medial malleolus.) Moxibustion 3 cones, needle depth 0.3 cun. Formerly, the Crown Prince of the Song Dynasty was skilled in medicine. Upon exiting the imperial garden, he encountered a pregnant woman. The Prince diagnosed: "Female fetus." He asked Xu Wenbo to diagnose, who said: "One male and one female." They needled Sanyinjiao (using reducing method) and Hegu (using reinforcing method). The fetus was expelled upon needling, exactly as Wenbo predicted. Therefore, acupoints should not be needled during pregnancy. Qian states: Below the bone eight cun superior to the medial malleolus. (Also stated: Three cun superior to the medial malleolus.)
Lougou (SP7), also known as Taiyin Luo, bilateral. Located in the depression below the tibia, six cun superior to the medial malleolus. Needle depth 0.3 cun. Ming physicians add: Moxibustion 3 cones is also applicable.
Diji (SP8), also known as Pi She, bilateral. Belonging to the Foot-Taiyin Splein Meridian, diverging upward one cun into an empty space. Located five cun below the knee. Moxibustion 3 cones, needle depth 0.3 cun. Ming physicians state: In the depression below the rotating bone on the medial side of the knee; obtain the point with the leg extended.
Yinlingquan (SP9), bilateral. Element: Water. Located in the depression below the medial condyle of the tibia (accessory bone) on the medial side of the knee; obtain the point with the leg extended. Needle depth 0.5 cun. It should be obtained with the knee flexed.
Xuehai (SP10), bilateral. Located two cun proximal to the superomedial border of the patella, at the junction of white skin. Moxibustion 3 cones, needle depth 0.5 cun. Qian states: Two and a half cun at the junction of white skin. Commentary notes: Some versions read three cun.
Jimen (SP11), bilateral. Located above the fleshy part of the thigh (adductor region), between the tendons where the arterial pulse is palpable, on the medial aspect of the upper thigh. Another version states: Proximal to the arising tendon. Moxibustion 3 cones.
