(There are forty acupoints in total on both the left and right sides.)
[Image Placeholder: Diagram of Hand-Yangming Meridian Acupoints]
Shangyang (Jueyang): Located on the medial side of the index finger, approximately the width of a leek leaf from the corner of the nail. It is the Jing-Well point where the Large Intestine meridian originates. (Needle 1 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Tinnitus, deafness, alternating chills and fever, malaria.
Erbian (Jian Gu): Located in the depression on the medial side anterior to the base joint of the index finger. It is the Ying-Spring point where the Large Intestine meridian flows. Excess syndromes should be treated with draining method. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Throat obstruction, nasal congestion, epistaxis, toothache.
Sanjian (Shao Gu): Located in the depression on the medial side posterior to the base joint of the index finger. It is the Shu-Stream point where the Large Intestine meridian pours. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Caries pain of lower teeth, borborygmus, diarrhea.
Hegu (Hukou): Located in the depression between the metacarpal bones of the index finger and thumb. Take the point while making a fist. It is the Yuan-Source point where the Large Intestine meridian passes through. Both excess and deficiency syndromes are treated by lifting and thrusting manipulation. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones. Contraindicated during pregnancy. Historically, Xu Wenbo caused abortion by draining Sanyinjiao (SP6) of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen meridian and tonifying Hegu, due to blood deficiency and qi flourishing.) Indications: Muscle spasticity in stroke, headache in cold damage, leukoma, wind-rash, inability to close lips and mouth corners.
Yangxi (Zhong Kui): Located in the depression between the two tendons on the radial side of the wrist crease. Take the point while extending the thumb and index finger. It is the Jing-River point where the Large Intestine meridian travels. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Fever with restlessness, leukoma, red and swollen eyes, tinnitus, convulsions, inability to raise elbow and arm.
Pianli: Located 3 cun posterior to the wrist crease, it is the Luo-Connecting point of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian, connecting to the Hand-Taiyin Lung meridian. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Chills and fever, epilepsy with excessive talking, tinnitus, epistaxis, throat obstruction, toothache, soreness and pain in shoulder and arm.
Wenliu (Nizhu, Chitou): Located between 5 and 6 cun posterior to the wrist crease. It is the Xi-Cleft point of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Borborygmus and abdominal pain, hiccups in cold damage, chest diaphragm qi stagnation, swelling and pain of mouth and tongue.
Xialian: Located below the accessory bone, 2.5 cun above Wenliu, 1 cun away from Shanglian, at the separation of the sharp muscle. (Needle 5 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Bi-syndrome pain, mastitis, accumulation masses, small intestine hernia.
Shanglian: Located 1 cun below Shousanli (ST36 equivalent on arm), where the muscle distribution uniquely meets the Yangming intersection, slanting outward. (Needle 5 fen; Moxibustion 5 moxa cones.) Indications: Numbness of arm and hand, chest pain, panting, borborygmus, difficulty in urination.
Shousanli (Hand Sanli): Located 2 cun below Quchi, at the end of the sharp muscle. The muscle rises upon pressing. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Hemiplegia, lower toothache, submandibular swelling, scrofula.
Quchi: Located in the depression at the head of the transverse cubital crease when flexing the elbow, between the lateral accessory bone and the curved bone. Take the point with hands crossed over the chest. It is the He-Sea point where the Large Intestine meridian enters. Deficiency syndromes should be treated with tonifying method. (Needle 7 fen; Moxibustion 7 moxa cones.) Indications: Convulsions, epilepsy, skin crusts and scabies, residual heat after cold damage, amenorrhea in women.
Zhou Liao: Located in the depression on the lateral margin of the large bone of the elbow. It aligns with Tianjing (TE10) of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao meridian, 1.4 cun apart. (Moxibustion 3 moxa cones; Needle 3 fen.) Indications: Wind-bi of elbow joint, arm pain with inability to lift.
Wuli: Located 3 cun above the elbow, in the center of the major vessel along the meridian pathway. Another theory states it is 5 cun below Tianfu (LU3). (Moxibustion 7 moxa cones. Contraindicated for needling.) Indications: Qi rebellion, scrofula.
Binao: Located 1 cun below Jianliao (SI14), in the depression between two tendons and two bones. Take the point with arm raised (or one theory says with arm flat). It is the intersection of Hand-Taiyang, Hand-Yangming, and Yangqiao vessels. (Moxibustion 7 moxa cones; Needle 3 fen. Do not needle deeply.) Indications: Scrofula, arm pain. (Note: The distance from shoulder to elbow is 1 chi 7 cun. The point is 1 cun below Jianliao. The phrase "seven cun above elbow at muscle end" in old texts is an error and has been deleted.)
Jianliao (Zhong Jianjing, Pianjian): Located in the depression between two bones at the top of the humerus at the shoulder end. Take the point with arm raised, feeling a hollow sensation. It is the intersection of Hand-Taiyin, Hand-Yangming, and Hand-Yangqiao vessels. (Needle 8 fen; Moxibustion 5 moxa cones.) Indications: Stroke paralysis, shoulder and arm pain with inability to turn head, seminal emission, emaciation, goiter, scrofula.
Jugu: Located in the gap between the bifurcated bones above the shoulder tip. It is the intersection of Hand-Yangming and Hand-Yangqiao vessels. (Needle 4 fen; Moxibustion 5 moxa cones.) Indications: Blood stasis in chest, inability to flex or extend shoulder and arm.
Tianding: Located in the neck, directly above the Clavicle (Quepen), 1 cun posterior to Futu. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Sudden aphonia, qi choking, throat obstruction, pharyngeal swelling, inability to eat.
Futu (Shui Xue): Located in the neck, 1 cun below the angle of the jaw, 1.5 cun posterior to Renying (ST9), 3 cun from the midline. Take the point in supine position. (Needle 3 fen; Moxibustion 3 moxa cones.) Indications: Cough with rebellious qi, gurgling sound in throat like a water frog, external contraction symptoms.
Heliao (Changliao): Located 0.5 cun lateral to the philtrum (Shuigou), under the nostril. (Needle 3 fen. Contraindicated for moxibustion.) Indications: Nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, epistaxis.
Yingxiang: Located 1 cun above Heliao, 0.5 cun lateral to the nostril. It is the intersection of Hand-Yangming and Foot-Yangming meridians. (Needle 3 fen. Contraindicated for moxibustion.) Indications: Nasal polyps, facial itching, edema.
