Jaundice diseases mostly belong to the Taiyin Damp-Earth. When the Spleen fails to overcome dampness and is further complicated by Heat-Fire, stagnation occurs leading to jaundice. In ancient times, there were five names for jaundice: Huanghan (Yellow Sweat), Huangdan (Jaundice), Gudan (Grain Jaundice), Jiudan (Wine Jaundice), and Heidan (Black Jaundice).
Huanghan presents with heat lingering in the skin; this belongs to Exterior Syndromes.
Huangdan presents with yellowing of the body, face, eyes, and fingernails, along with frequent hunger and yellow urine, caused by steaming and stagnation of Damp-Heat; the pathogen remains in the Stomach, belonging to Interior Syndromes.
Gudan presents with inability to eat, dizziness, abdominal distension, and vexation after eating, caused by extreme hunger or overeating; the disease resides in the Middle Jiao.
Jiudan presents with chest oppression and restlessness, desire to vomit but unable to do so, yellow eyes, dry nose, red spots on the face, swelling of the calves, and red urine, caused by toxicity lingering in the Clear Pathways after heavy drinking while exposed to wind; the disease resides in the Upper Jiao. If the pulse is Floating-Hong (Surging), induce vomiting first; if the pulse is Deep-Xian (Chord-like), induce purgation first.
The essence and qi of water and grain are stasised by Damp-Heat and fail to circulate, transforming into Heidan (Black Jaundice). Symptoms include black complexion, blueish hue around the eyes, and rough, dry skin. If the pulse is Weak-Micro, it is incurable.
Se Dan (caused by sexual exhaustion) presents with a black forehead, sweating on the head, hot palms and soles, aversion to cold, free urination, and black stool. This is caused by Kidney injury due to sexual fatigue, residing in the Lower Jiao. If accompanied by excessive thirst, it is difficult to treat. (In summer, when Damp-Heat steams together, signs of yellowing often appear; if Heat predominates, the color is bright; if Dampness predominates, the color is dull.)
The *Lingshu: Shuizhang* chapter states: Can Fuzhang (Skin Distension) and Guzhang (Drum Distension) be treated with acupuncture? Qibo said: First puncture the collateral vessels at the site of distension to release blood, then regulate the meridians (puncture again to remove residual blood collaterals).
Hejian’s *Treatise on Five Waters Moxibustion Methods* states: For Fengshui (Wind Water), Pishui (Skin Water), Shishui (Stone Water), and Huanghan (Yellow Sweat), one should discuss them according to their corresponding Zang organs. Wind combines with the Liver, Skin combines with the Lung, Yellow Sweat combines with the Spleen, and Stone combines with the Kidney.
Fengshui has a Floating pulse and must have aversion to wind; Pishui also has a Floating pulse, and pressing leaves an indentation; Shishui has a Deep pulse, abdominal fullness without panting; Huanghan has a Deep-Chi pulse, fever, and profuse saliva. If not cured for a long time, it will inevitably lead to abscesses and edema. A pulse that is Floating-Rapid indicates deficiency-cold hiding within; over time, it will become Deep-Lying. Deep-Lying implies Yang deficiency and Yin excess, inevitably forming water pathology. It must be known that water pulses are always Deep. This is correct.
The classic says: If the pulse emerges superficially against the disease pattern, death ensues. Black lips indicate Liver injury; flat/full Clavicular fossa indicates Heart injury; protruding umbilicus indicates Spleen injury; flat/full sole indicates Kidney injury; flat/back fullness indicates Lung injury. All are incurable.
For Fengshui, moxa the Jing-Well point of the Liver (Dadun LR1); for Chishui, moxa the Ying-Spring point of the Heart (Shaoford HT8); for Huanghan, moxa the Shu-stream point of the Spleen (Taibai SP3); for Pishui, moxa the Jing-River point of the Lung Meridian (Jingqu LU8); for Shishui, moxa the He-Sea point of the Kidney (Yingu KI10).
Song verse: One must know the ten types of drum distension first. Beware of a high convex umbilicus, green veins on the abdomen which cannot be treated with medicine, scrotum without seams which is hopeless, back flat as a board which is ultimately untreatable, palms without lines which limit lifespan, inability to digest grains leading to death in ten days, belly shining like a drum with delayed prognosis, phlegm and shortness of breath having no remedy. Nine out of ten cases are critical.
Qi distension has never been curable. The belly shines like a drum, very strange. Pressing feels like stone, striking sounds hollow. Only by venting Qi can miraculous effects be seen.
