There are fifteen Luo (Collateral) vessels, including Hengluo (Horizontal Collaterals) and Jingluo (Meridian Collaterals), totaling eighteen thousand. There are also Sunluo (Sun Collaterals), whose numbers are incalculable.
On Luo Acupoints
Luo acupoints are located midway between two meridians. For example, when standing with hands crossed to locate the point, Lieque (LU 7) is found in the gap behind the high bone at the wrist, at the end of the thumb and index finger.
The medial side is the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian (Hand-Taiyin Fei Jing), and the lateral side is the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Hand-Yangming Dachang Jing). The Lieque acupoint intersects these two meridians. If a Luo acupoint is needled, both the exterior and interior aspects become active; other points follow this principle.
Differentiation of Luo Acupoints
Among the sixty-six flowing and circulating acupoints, these fifteen Luo acupoints are not included. Each of the twelve regular meridians has one Luo acupoint, plus three additional special Luo acupoints. The Yangqiao Luo collateral is located in the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Foot-Taiyang Pangguang Jing); the Yinqiao Luo collateral is located in the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (Foot-Shaoyin Shen Jing); and the Great Luo of the Spleen is located in the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian (Foot-Taiyin Pijing). This distinguishes the fifteen Luo acupoints.
The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian (Foot-Jueyin Ganying) crosses out from behind the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian at eight cun above the medial malleolus. The Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, in turn, crosses out from in front of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
I asked: Is the principle of pulse truly Qi, or is it Blood? The answer was: The waves of Qi and Blood are like the bellows (Tuoyue) of the body; this specific theory does not accord with reason.
Pulse (Mai) means a path; it is where Hun and Po souls are generated, and where Qi and Blood gather. It is the ancestor of Heaven and Earth, and the source of all things. This theory holds profound meaning, which I often emulate. I asked: What is the true meaning of the principle of Jing (Meridians)? The answer was: Jing refers to the pathways through which Qi and Blood travel, hence it is called Jing. I asked: Regarding the "cun" measurement on the body, what serves as the reference for a "cun"? The answer was: Bend the middle finger and thumb together into a ring shape; take the distance between the two corners of the inner crease as one cun, adjusting according to individual size. Question: Why does the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian originate from the Lung? Answer: Food enters the Stomach, essence is transported to the Spleen, and Qi is distributed to the Lung; this is what is meant. Question: Every acupoint on the body exists in pairs on the left and right. When applying tonification or sedation techniques, do we only needle the affected side, or both sides? Answer: Not so. Tonify and sedate according to the location of the disease; if the disease is on the left, tonify and sedate the left; if on the right, tonify and sedate the right. Question: What constitutes a Luo (Collateral)? Answer: Those that run horizontally are Luos, and there are fifteen Luo acupoints. Question: The *Zhenjing* (Needle Classic) states: "Moxibustion for how many moxa cones? After needling, why apply moxibustion again?" Answer: Needling should be done when indicated, and moxibustion when indicated. If one needles without moxibustion, or moxibustion without needling, it is incomplete. Question: What is the principle of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi? Answer: The *Nanjing* (Classic of Difficult Issues) states: Blood is Ying, Qi is Wei. Ying circulates within the vessels, while Wei circulates outside the vessels. Question: The method of twirling the needle has left and right directions. What is defined as left? What is defined as right? Answer: Bring the thumb and index finger together. Advancing the thumb forward and upward is called left; retreating the thumb backward and downward is called right. When inserting the needle, one must alternate left and right.
