Women's metrorrhagia and metrostaxis are all caused by damage to the Zang-Fu organs or the Chong and Ren meridians, leading to deficiency of Qi and Blood. These two meridians serve as the Sea of Blood for the meridian system; the movement of Qi and Blood circulates outward along the collaterals and nourishes the Zang-Fu organs internally. When Qi and Blood are harmonious and balanced, menstruation occurs on schedule. If the Zang-Fu organs are overworked, they injure the Qi of the Chong and Ren meridians. Consequently, due to deficiency, they fail to restrain the blood, causing menstrual blood to suddenly flow down in large amounts, which is termed "Beng Zhong" (Sudden Collapse). Treatment should focus on greatly tonifying Qi and Blood, nourishing the Spleen and Stomach, suppressing Heart Fire, assisting Yang to nourish Yin, after which menstruation will naturally cease. Additionally, if dark purple blood clots form resembling postpartum lochia and flow excessively without stopping, this is termed "reckless movement of blood due to Heat." At this stage, medicinal action may not reach the root cause quickly; addressing the acute symptoms first is appropriate. It is suitable to use Baizhi Decoction (Angelica Dahurica Decoction) or send down medicines with Maogen Decoction (Imperata Rhizome Decoction), or use Baicaoshuang (Charred Herbal Ash), Zonglutan (Areca Palm Charcoal), Er Canmian Tan (Charred Silk Cocoon Floss), added with Ganjiang Tan (Charred Dried Ginger), which is most excellent. However, it should not be taken in large quantities because of the heat nature of Ginger. Blood Heat causes rapid circulation, Cold causes coagulation, and encountering black (charred substances) stops bleeding. Subsequently, use Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) along with Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit). After bleeding has ceased for two to three days, fearing Qi and Blood deficiency, it is suitable to use Siwu Tang combined with Renshen (Ginseng), [missing character, likely Huangqi], Huangqin, Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), which yields effective results. Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung), half raw and half stir-fried, ground into powder and taken with good wine, works because Wulingzhi can promote Qi circulation and stop bleeding.
For treating Beng Zhong, Jingjie (Schizonepeta Herb) clears Blood Heat, Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) enters the Blood aspect, and Wumei (Mume Fruit) also enters the Blood aspect. Vinegar-processed Xiangfu is an essential medicine for women; it should not be used in excess in the Qi aspect, nor should it be lacking in the Blood aspect. However, diseases have Yin and Yang distinctions, and so do medicines. For cases of Blood depletion leading to amenorrhea and obstruction, accompanied by vexing heat in the hands and feet, headache, physical weakness, and occasional slight fever, Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) combined with Taoren (Peach Kernel), Honghua (Carthamus Flower), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Wuyao (Lindera Root), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), and Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) is indicated. Liuji Nu (Artemisia Annua Herb) and Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Bark), when taken for a long time, will naturally restore patency.
Metrorrhagia: Zonglutan (Areca Palm Charcoal), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger - small dose), Er Canmian Tan (Charred Silk Cocoon Floss), Wumei (Mume Fruit), sent down with Jingjie Decoction. If there is Blood Heat, add Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huang [missing character, likely Huangqi], Huaishanyao (Chinese Yam), fresh Jingjie (Schizonepeta Herb), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), and Tianmendong (Asparagus Tuber), decocted and taken orally.
Another prescription: Use fresh Tianmendong (Asparagus Tuber) to cook glutinous rice porridge; eating it morning and evening is effective.
