[Diagram of Right Redness Transmitting to the Left]
Question: Why does redness in the right eye transmit to the left? Answer: This is due to hyperactive fire in the Yin meridians. In pulse diagnosis, both the Yin meridians and the Yang collaterals are associated with the Lung. Qi is the essence of the Lung; therefore, redness transmitting from the right to the left indicates pathogenic heat in the Lung meridian and hyperactive fire in the Yin collaterals. It is appropriate to administer Xiefei San (Lung-Draining Powder). Another view attributes it to Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire at the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen).
Xiefei San (Lung-Draining Powder)
Sangbaipi San (Mulberry Bark Powder): Treats lung Qi stagnation and obstruction, where pathogenic heat attacks upward to the eyes, causing swelling of the sclera (white part of the eye), pain day and night, and mental restlessness.
Ingredients: Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Tingli (Descurainiae Semen seu Lepidii Semen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, each 1 liang).
Usage: For each dose, use 1.5 zhong of water and 3 slices of ginger. Decoct until reduced to 0.8 zhong. Take warm after meals, some time later.
[Diagram of Eyelids Swollen Like a Peach]
Question: When a person suffers from an eye condition where the eyelids are obstructed and swollen like a peach, what is the cause? Answer: This is caused by stagnant heat in the Spleen and Lung. Pathogenic factors lodge in the couli (interstices), causing the upper and lower eyelids to swell like a peach, accompanied by pain, astringency, and continuous tearing. To treat "peach-eye," apply hot-compresses using heated peach leaves on the swollen area. It is appropriate to treat this primarily with Qingliang San (Cooling and Clearing Powder), Qianghuo Chufeng Tang (Notopterygium Decoction for Dispelling Wind), or Chanhua San (Cicada Flower Powder).
Qingliang San (Cooling and Clearing Powder)
Ingredients: Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, each 3 liang), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Chi Fuling (Poria with Hostwood), Gange (Puerariae Radix), Caojueming (Semen Cassiae).
Usage: Grind all ingredients into powder. Take 6 qian per dose, decoct with water and take orally.
Qianghuo Chufeng Tang (Notopterygium Decoction for Dispelling Wind)
Ingredients: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each 1 liang), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Muzei (Equiseti Herba).
Usage: Decoct with water and take orally.
Chanhua San (Cicada Flower Powder)
[Diagram of Unclear Vision]
Question: When a person suffers from an eye condition where vision is unclear, as if obscured by gauze, what is the cause? Answer: This is due to blood deficiency and qi excess. Blood belongs to Ying (Nutritive) Qi, and Qi belongs to Wei (Defensive) Qi. Wei Qi is Yang and clear; Ying Qi is Yin and turbid. The *Suwen* states: Clear Qi constitutes Heaven, Turbid Qi constitutes Earth. Clear Yang disperses to the couli, while Turbid Yin travels to the Zang organs (Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney). The eye has five wheels internally corresponding to the five Zang organs. The Kidney corresponds to the Water Wheel, which is the pupil. If Kidney Water is deficient and cannot nourish Liver Wood, Liver Wood becomes blood-deficient and fails to nourish the eyes. Thus, the eyes lack luster and cannot sustain prolonged vision. Kidney deficiency fails to interact with Heart Fire, causing Heart Fire to flare upward, making the eyes hot and vision inaccurate. Currently, Kidney Water deficiency leads to deflected Yang attacking upward, and Liver Blood deficiency means the eyes do not receive blood nourishment. Is this not blood deficiency with qi excess? One should administer Zhujing Wan (Stabilizing Scenery Pill) to tonify the Kidney, and Sishun Lianggan San (Four-Obedience Liver-Cooling Powder).
Zhujing Wan (Stabilizing Scenery Pill)

Usage: Process with refined honey to form pills. Take with salt water.
Sishun Lianggan San (Four-Obedience Liver-Cooling Powder)

Usage: Use equal parts of each ingredient. Decoct with water and take warm.
