The syndrome of pediatric Gan injury (damage to the spleen and stomach due to food stagnation affecting the eyes) is common in children from wealthy families, primarily due to excessive indulgence by parents. Children are like tender sprouts of grass and trees, unable to withstand wind, sun, cold, and dew. Moreover, their five zang organs and six fu organs are not yet solid, and their qi and blood are weak; how can they endure greasy, fried, stir-fried foods, and various animal products? Some children, between one and a half to two years old, indulge in sweets and meats such as goose, duck, chicken, pig, cow, and sheep; or after finishing a meal, they are fed milk; or after being full on milk, they are given rice. These actions stem from the deep love of parents. Wealthy families have this syndrome, but do poor families also have it? Why? Because once various foods are consumed and cannot be digested, the spleen is injured first, leading to abdominal distension, afternoon fever that subsides only around midnight, sparse hair over time, and subsequently frequent diarrhea. Severe diarrhea causes thirst, further injuring the liver and gallbladder. The sclera becomes bright red, with photophobia and aversion to sunlight. Gradually, nebulae form, obscuring the cornea/pupil, or protrude like black beans or mushrooms. Treatment method: Treat the interior first, then the exterior. Use an egg with 1-2 fen of Calomelas (Qingfen), 1.5 Renis Semen Quinqueglandulosae (Shijunzi), and several scallion bulbs, wrap in wet cotton, bake, and feed to the child. It is advisable to consume 5-7 eggs consecutively on an empty stomach until stopped. Alternatively, boil lamb liver, leave overnight, dip in Nux Lucidae (Yeming Sha) for consumption, or boil pork liver. Strictly avoid animal products. For the white membrane, use the "Yin-Yang Seven" formula mixed with milk for eye drops, decoct Hu Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) for oral administration, and fumigate/wash with Platycladi Cacumen (Ce Bai Ye). If Gan injury affects the liver and gallbladder, causing proptosis or total blindness, it is an incurable syndrome, not only causing blindness but even endangering life. If hoarseness, dry mouth, and swelling of hands and feet occur, eight or nine out of ten will die.
Question: What is the cause of pediatric Gan injury to the eyes, characterized by pain, photophobia, inability to open the eyes, green nebulae on the cornea like black beads, or white membranes covering the eyes? Answer: This is caused by consuming fruits, miscellaneous items, greasy foods, and heat-toxic substances while nursing, which generates Gan accumulation in the spleen and stomach, or causes persistent diarrhea and night tidal fevers. Over time, Gan worms injure the liver, attacking upwards to the eyes. Initially, there is redness, roughness, and photophobia, requiring urgent treatment. If black nebulae like beads appear on the cornea accompanied by persistent diarrhea, it is mostly incurable. It is suitable to take Chu Re Yin (Heat-Removing Decoction) and other formulas.
Wu Gan Wan (Five Gan Pills): Treats pediatric Gan eye syndrome, emaciated face, yellowish skin, photophobia, and indigestion of milk.
Lv Fan (Calamites Mineral, cleaned) Mituo Seng (Litharge, processed) Yeming Sha (Nux Lucidae, each 1 liang)
Grind into powder. Use steamed jujube flesh to mix the powder and form pills the size of millet seeds. Take 30-40 pills per dose, adjusted for the child's age, on an empty stomach with rice gruel.
Chu Re Yin (Heat-Removing Decoction):
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, each 1 liang) Hei Shen (Ginseng Radix Rubra) Chong Wei Zi (Eryngii Fructus) Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba, each 1.5 liang)
Decoct in water. Take three doses after meals. Additionally, use one egg, three Renis Semen Quinqueglandulosae (Shijunzi), and 2 fen of Calomelas (Qingfen), grind into powder, place inside the egg, bake until cooked, and take on an empty stomach. Consuming 2-3 eggs eliminates Gan worms, followed by Wu Gan Wan.
