After eight or nine days of Cold Damage (Shanghan), Wind and Dampness are entangled, causing body pain and inability to turn over independently. With no vomiting or thirst, and a floating, deficient, and choppy pulse, Guizhi Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Decoction) is the primary treatment.
In Shaoyin disease (Diseases of the Heart and Kidney), appearing within one or two days, if the mouth feels neutral (no dryness or heat) and there is aversion to cold in the back, moxibustion should be applied, and Fuzi Tang (Aconite Decoction) is the primary treatment. In Shaoyin disease, if there is body pain, cold hands and feet, bone joint pain, and a deep pulse, Shu Fuzi Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala and Aconite Decoction) is the primary treatment.
After eight or nine days of Cold Damage, if Wind and Dampness are entangled, causing severe and vexatious body pain with an inability to turn over, without vomiting or thirst, and with a floating, deficient, and choppy pulse, Guizhi Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Decoction) is used. If the patient has hard stool and free urination, then Shu Fuzi Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala and Aconite Decoction) is the primary treatment.
If purgation was performed first, followed by sweating, resulting in restlessness and insomnia during the day but quietness at night, without vomiting or thirst, without exterior syndrome, with a deep and faint pulse, and without significant fever, Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Haicang stated: If there is spontaneous sweating, use Shu Fuzi Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala and Aconite Decoction); if there is no sweating, use Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction).
If sweating or purgation fails to resolve the pathogen, and restlessness persists, Lingfen Sini Tang (Poria and Four Reversals Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Generally speaking, Zhang Zhongjing’s medication focuses on regulating the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner). Formulas such as Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction), Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill), Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder), Jianzhong Tang (Establish the Middle Decoction), Pingwei San (Level the Stomach Powder), and Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) are typical examples.
Suppose the Stomach channel combines with the Taiyang channel (Taiyang Disease), and the pulse is floating: add Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) if there is spontaneous sweating, or Mahuang (Ephedra) if there is no sweating, because of accompanying pain in the head, neck, limbs, and joints.
Suppose the Stomach channel combines with the Shaoyang channel (Shaoyang Disease), and the pulse is wiry: add Chaihu (Bupleurum) and Gan Mugua (Dried Chaenomeles Fruit) because of pain under the ribs.
Suppose the Stomach channel combines with the Yangming channel (Yangming Disease), and the pulse is excess/solid: add Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) because of obstruction of both large and small bowels following vomiting and diarrhea.
Suppose the Stomach channel combines with the Taiyin channel (Taiyin Disease), and the pulse is deep and fine: add Shaoyao (Peony Root) and Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) because of abdominal pain and heaviness of the body.
Suppose the Stomach channel combines with the Shaoyin channel (Shaoyin Disease), and the pulse is deep and slow: add Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root) because of tetany of the four limbs and coldness of the body.
Suppose the Stomach channel combines with the Jueyin channel (Jueyin Disease), and the pulse is faint and moderate: add Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), and Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) because of cold reversal in the four limbs. The formulas for Jueyin channel diseases include Wuzhuyu Tang (Evodia Decoction) and Danggui Sini Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
