Indicated for internal injury caused by drinking cold substances and external contraction of cold pathogenic factors resulting in anhidrosis (absence of sweating).
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, processed, two liang) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, two liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried, one liang)
The above herbs are cut into small pieces, decocted with water containing fresh ginger slices, and three cun-length segments of Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, white part of scallion) are added. It is miraculous in treating Ruping (breast abscess/mastitis). Take three qian per dose.
For Taiyang disease (disease syndrome of the Taiyang channel), characterized by fever, aversion to cold, and a floating and tight pulse, add Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix).
For Taiyang disease, where the floating and tight pulse contains a wiry and rapid quality, it indicates involvement of Shaoyang disease (disease syndrome of the Shaoyang channel); add Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix). Here, "wiriness" refers to a pulse that is wiry and forceful.
For Taiyang disease, where the floating and tight pulse contains a surging quality, it indicates involvement of Yangming disease (disease syndrome of the Yangming channel); add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix).
For the above three syndromes, approximately add two qianbi (a traditional measuring spoon) per dose. Regardless of which of the Three Yang channels is affected, when taken by women, adding Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) is particularly beneficial.
When Taiyang Cold Water governs the year (in the theory of Six Qi, when the ruling annual qi is Taiyang Cold Water), add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Qianghuo.
When Yangming Dry Metal governs the year, add Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma).
When Shaoyang Ministerial Fire governs the year, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, raw).
When Taiyin Damp Earth governs the year, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Bencao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix).
When Shaoyin Sovereign Fire governs the year, add Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix).
When Jueyin Wind Wood governs the year, add Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix).
The above modifications of Shenjiu Tang for the Six Qi are not established solely for the governing qi of the year. Regarding the main qi of each period of the year, as well as months, days, and hours that correspond to the qi that should manifest, all such cases should be modified according to the corresponding manifestations based on the examples above.
Ri Hua Zi stated: Huashi (Talcum) treats breast abscesses and promotes the flow of body fluids. The chapter "Shengqi Tongtian Lun" states: In the early morning, human qi begins to generate; at midday, yang qi is most vigorous; in the evening, yang qi is already deficient, and the vent pores close. Therefore, in the evening, one should conserve and reject external pathogens, avoid disturbing the sinews and bones, and avoid exposure to fog and dew. Violating these rules for the three times will cause the physical form to become exhausted and thin.
Wang Haogu stated: When yang qi exits, activity occurs; when yang qi stores, rest occurs. In the evening, yang qi declines and moves inward to the yin aspect, so it is appropriate to converge and defend against empty pathogens. Disturbing the sinews and bones leads to rebellion and consumption of essence; exposure to fog and dew leads to alternating invasion of cold and dampness. Complying with these three times preserves innate vitality for longevity.
Bian Que stated: If the pulse beats four times during one inhalation and exhalation and feels choppy, it indicates that the pathogen has invaded due to fog and dew. Zhang Zhongjing stated: Qing xie (light and clear pathogens) invade the Upper Jiao. He also stated: After Frost's Descent and before Spring Equinox, contracting fog and dew constitutes Shanghan (Cold Damage).
