After the newborn is born, decoct a large amount of water with Gancao (Licorice Root), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Maliaodou (Glycine max var. ussuriensis) for the infant to drink. This is because foul matter swallowed into the chest should be vomited out using Gancao; foul matter entering the abdomen should be purged using Huanglian. Fuling Wan (Poria Pill) can treat abdominal distension, shortness of breath, and inability to suckle in newborns. This is caused by foul matter entering the abdomen; if the infant suffers from abdominal pain due to cold acquired in the womb, it can also be treated.
Fuling Wan (Poria Pill)
Chifuling (Red Poria), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) [Do not use for Cold syndromes; instead use Shaoyao (Peony Root)]
Make honey pills the size of Sophora seeds (Tongzi). Administer one pill with breast milk.
It is advisable to use Yimucao Tang (Motherwort Decoction). This makes the infant's body smooth and promotes blood circulation, preventing the onset of sores and diseases.
Yimucao (Motherwort Herb), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) (each 1 liang), Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit), Kushen (Sophora Root) (each 2 liang), Bencao (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome) (5 qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Xionghuang (Realgar) (each 1 qian).
Another prescription: Tao Zhi (Peach Twig), Zi Zhi (Paulownia Twig).
Decoct for bathing and add one pig gallbladder to the water.
Infants suffering from Jin Feng (Lockjaw Wind) suddenly exhibit closed eyes, locked jaws, absence of crying sound, passage of green stool, meat-like protuberances on the tongue resembling millet grains, inability to suckle, and foaming at the mouth, while urination and defecation remain normal. This occurs because heat-toxin accumulated in the womb flows into the Heart and Spleen, manifesting in the throat and tongue. Alternatively, it may be caused by wind-pathogen invasion at birth, named Fan Feng Jin (Wind-Struck Lockjaw). The white millet-like growths in the mouth should be wrapped in cotton, dipped in water by the finger, and rubbed until broken. This condition can occur within the first 120 days. If the jaw is locked, refusing milk, with an urgent abdomen and frequent crying, and the jaw is tightly closed resembling Cuo Kou (Pinched Mouth), red complexion indicates Xin Jin (Heart Lockjaw), while white complexion indicates Fei Jin (Lung Lockjaw).
Infants suffering from Cuo Kou (Pinched Mouth) present with yellow or red swollen face and eyes, rapid breathing, and absent crying sounds. This is due to fetal heat combined with wind-heat invading the umbilicus, with toxins flowing into the Heart and Spleen, resulting in a stiff tongue and cyanotic lips, making it difficult to gather the mouth to suckle. If foaming at the mouth and cold limbs occur, it is incurable. Other symptoms include abdominal distension with visible blue veins, intestinal hernia, scrotal hernia, and internal pain drawn by qi, all caused by stagnation and knotting in the intestines and stomach. Only two out of ten cases can be saved; it is especially critical within the first month and usually resolves after one year of age. Use two straight, bright Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus); remove the silk and mouthparts, roast until crisp, and grind into powder. Mix with honey and apply to Renzhong (GV26) for recovery. Alternatively, grind 1 qian of Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and mix with Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) to smear inside the mouth. (Note: Niuhuang should be tender yellow, light and porous, layered and peelable, slightly fragrant, and thin enough to be translucent when rubbed against a fingernail.)
