Umbilical wind (Qifeng) refers to a condition where water-dampness, wind-cold pathogenic factors enter the umbilicus after cord cutting, flowing into the heart and lungs. In severe cases, it leads to convulsions and fright. If the umbilicus protrudes with cyanosis around its periphery, and the mouth is tightly closed (Neicuo), it indicates an internal contraction. Blackening of the fingernails signifies a fatal prognosis. Treatment involves using one red-footed centipede, four scorpion tails, seven silkworms (Jiangcan), and five fen of Dianthera (Qumai), ground into powder. First, blow the powder into the nasal cavity using a goose feather tube; if sneezing and crying occur, the condition is treatable. Subsequently, administer the medicine mixed with Mint Decoction (Bohe Tang). Although these three remedies have different names, their therapeutic principles are identical. The etiology stems from the stagnation and obstruction of interior qi, often caused by the umbilical cord being cut too short or tied loosely, allowing external wind to invade the umbilicus, traction on the cord, or water entering causing sores. For mouth closure symptoms, it is crucial to unblock and regulate qi, followed by administering "Xiaohong Wan" (Little Red Pill) to purge, and then using Bao Long Wan (Embrace Dragon Pill) or Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill).
Fright induced by heart heat presents with a cyanotic face, inability to cry, vomiting of white foam, abdominal distension and hardness, edema around the umbilicus, stiff tongue preventing suckling, and differs from Jin Feng (lockjaw). Newborns with heat in the chest making frequent sounds and exhibiting body rigidity/distension should be treated by dispelling wind. This presentation features blue eyebrows and a red face; medication is not recommended. For treating infant lockjaw and closed teeth, use peeled and de-navelled Arisaema Rhizome (Tiannanxing) ground into fine powder, mixed with a small amount of Borneol (Longnao). Dip a finger in ginger juice, mix with the powder, and rub onto the teeth.
Xiaohong Wan (also known as Zhensha Wan)
Scorpio (Quandu, cleaned, 1 liang) Arisaema Rhizome (Tiannanxing, 1 liang) Pearl (Zhenzhu, 1 qian) Cinnabar (Zhusha, 4.5 qian) Croton Seed Frost (Bashuang, 2.5 qian)
Grind into powder, form pills with glutinous rice paste the size of mustard seeds. Administer 3-5 pills per year of age, adjusting according to the child's strength. For children over ten years old, 100 pills are effective, taken with Juncus Decothesis (Dengxin Cao Tang). Dosage must be adjusted flexibly; only skilled practitioners can determine appropriate doses such as 60-70 or 40-50 pills.
Bao Long Wan (Embrace Dragon Pill)
Tropical Bamboo Slime (Tianzhuhuang, 1 liang) Arisaema with Bile (Dansheng, 4 liang) Realgar (Xionghuang, 5 qian)
Form honey pills the size of longan seeds, weighing approximately 1 qian each, coated with Cinnabar (Zhusha). Take one pill per dose, dissolved in Mint Decoction (Bohe Tang). Coating with Zhensha (Cinnabar) is also acceptable.
Niuhuang Wan (Calculus Bovis Pill)
Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) Scutellaria Root (Huanglian) (each 1 liang) Arisaema with Bile (Dansheng, 2 liang) Tropical Bamboo Slime (Tianzhuhuang, 5 qian) Gastrodia Tuber (Tianma, 5 qian) Silkworm (Jiangcan) Scorpio (Jinxie) (each 3 qian) Realgar (Xionghuang, 3 qian) Dragon Teeth (Longchi, 3 qian) Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang, 1 qian) Moschus (Shexiang) Borneol (Bingpian) (each 0.5 qian)
Form honey pills sealed with wax. Remove wax before use, dissolve in Mint Decoction (Bohe Tang) or Juncus Decoction (Dengxin Cao Tang).
