In the first month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Pei" (Initial Embryo). Diet should be fine and well-cooked, with a preference for sour and delicious flavors. Barley (*Hordeum vulgare*) is suitable to eat, while fishy and pungent/spicy foods should be avoided. This is referred to as "Cai Zheng" (Establishing the Foundation).
During the first month of pregnancy, the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Jueyin internally connects to the Liver, which governs the sinews and blood. In the first month, the flow of Qi and Blood is slightly stagnant; one should not engage in strenuous labor, sleep must be quiet, and fear should be prevented.
In the first month, Yin and Yang newly combine to form the embryo. If Cold predominates, pain may occur; if Heat predominates, sudden palpitations or fright may arise. Lifting heavy objects may cause lower back pain, abdominal fullness, uterine tension, or sudden vaginal bleeding. In such cases, the fetus should be stabilized in advance. The Wuci Ji Tang (Black Hen Decoction) is appropriate.
*Ingredients:* One Black Hen (prepared for cooking), Fu Ling (Poria, 1 liang), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit, 1 sheng), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, each 3 liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 5 he).
*Preparation:* Chop the ten ingredients. Boil the hen in 12 dou of water until the volume reduces to 6 sheng. Remove the chicken, add the remaining herbs, and boil until 3 sheng remains. Add 3 sheng of wine and melt the gelatin (Ejiao) into the decoction. Strain. Warm and take 1 sheng per dose, three times daily.
If the first month's pregnancy has been previously injured, the Bu Tai Tang (Fetus-Nourishing Decoction) should be taken in advance.
*Ingredients:* Xi Xin (Asarum Root, 1 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, 2 liang), Wu Mei (Mume Fruit, 1 sheng), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit, 5 he), Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, dried, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, each 1 liang), Da Mai (Barley, 5 he).
*Preparation:* Chop the eight ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remains. Strain. Divide into three warm doses. If Cold predominates, double the dosage of Xi Xin and Wu Zhu Yu. If Heat predominates with thirst, remove Xi Xin and Wu Zhu Yu, and add Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root, 2 liang). If there is excessive thinking/worry, remove Da Mai and add Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed, 3 he). Avoid raw vegetables, Yuan Yi (Chuanxinlian/Herba Siegesbeckiae), and peach flesh.
In the second month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Gao" (Initial Paste). Avoid pungent and fishy/smelly foods. Reside in a quiet place. The husband should avoid exertion. The mother may experience pain in all joints. This is when the fetus begins to knot together.
During the second month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Shaoyang internally connects to the Gallbladder, which stores essence. In the second month, the fetal essence forms in the uterus.
In the second month, Yin and Yang begin to accumulate in the meridians. If Cold predominates, the fetus may fail to develop properly; if Heat predominates, the fetus may wither. Exposure to Wind-Cold may cause fetal movement. Symptoms include chest fullness, urgency below the navel, stiffness and pain in the lower back, sudden vaginal bleeding, alternating chills and fever. Ai Tang (Mugwort Decoction) is the primary treatment.
*Ingredients:* Dan Shen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root, 3 liang), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem, de-segmented), Ai Ye (Artemisia Argyi Leaf), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin, roasted, each 2 liang), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted, 1 liang), Da Zao (Jujube, 10 pieces).
*Preparation:* Chop the nine ingredients. Boil in 3 sheng of wine and 1 dou of water until reduced by half. Strain, add the gelatin, and simmer until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three warm doses. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum Thallus) and Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage).
If the second month's pregnancy has been injured, the Huang Lian Tang (Coptis Decoction) should be taken in advance.
*Ingredients:* Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, each 1 liang), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit, 5 he), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, fresh, 5 liang), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 liang).
*Preparation:* Chop the five ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of vinegar-water mixture until 3 sheng remains. Divide into four doses: three during the day and one at night. Prepare a batch every ten days. If significant discomfort is felt, add Wu Mei (Mume Fruit, 1 sheng); when adding Wu Mei, use plain water instead of vinegar-water. Avoid pork, cold water, and Yuan Yi. Another version includes Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 0.5 liang). (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 33)
In the third month of pregnancy, it is called "Shi Tai" (Initial Fetus). At this time, the form is not yet fixed and is influenced by external stimuli. To conceive a boy, handle bows and arrows; to conceive a girl, handle pearls and beads. To have a beautiful child, frequently view jade ornaments. To have a virtuous child, sit upright in a quiet and empty space. This is known as "External Image Influencing Internal Sensation."
During the third month, the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Hand Jueyin internally connects to the Heart. The pregnant woman should avoid sorrow, excessive thought, and agitation.
In the third month, the fetal form begins to solidify. If Cold predominates, stool may be green. If Heat predominates, urination may be difficult, yellow or red. Sudden fright, grief, anger, or excessive joy causing falls can disturb the meridians. Symptoms include abdominal fullness, severe pain around the navel, lower back pain, and sudden vaginal bleeding. Xiong Ji Tang (Male Chicken Decoction) is indicated.
*Ingredients:* One Male Chicken (prepared for cooking), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Fu Ling (Poria), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin, each 2 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, each 1 liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber).
*Preparation:* Chop the eleven ingredients. Boil the chicken in 1.5 dou of water until reduced by half. Add the herbs and boil until half the liquid remains. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and the gelatin, simmer again until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. Consume within one day. Rest warmly after taking. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum Thallus), Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage), vinegar products, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat. Another version adds Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root) and Xiong Qiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, each 2 liang), omitting Huang Qin and Sheng Jiang.
If the third month's pregnancy has been injured, the Fu Shen Tang (Poria with Heartwood Decoction) should be taken in advance.
*Ingredients:* Fu Shen (Poria with Pine Root), Dan Shen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root), Long Gu (Fossilized Bones, each 1 liang), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, each 2 liang), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean, 21 grains).
*Preparation:* Chop the nine ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of vinegar-water until 3 sheng remains. Divide into four doses. Take one dose every seven days. For lower back pain, add Sang Ji Sheng (Taxillus Branch, 2 liang). Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum Thallus) and Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage). (From *Wai Tai Mi Yao*, Vol. 33)
In the fourth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Water to form blood vessels. Rice (*Oryza sativa*) is suitable to eat, and fish or wild goose are suitable for soup. This is called forming Qi and Blood to open the ears and eyes and circulate through the meridians.
During the fourth month, the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao (Triple Burner) Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Hand Shaoyang internally connects to the Sanjiao. In the fourth month, the six fu-organs of the fetus develop in sequence. The body should remain still, the mind calm, and diet regulated.
In the fourth month, it is called "Li Jing" (Leaving the Meridian). If Cold predominates, there may be a feeling of warmth in the epigastrium with nausea, chest and diaphragm fullness, and loss of appetite. If Heat predominates, urination may be difficult and frequent, resembling strangury, with urgency below the navel. Sudden exposure to Wind-Cold causes neck stiffness and pain, chills, and fever. Agitation may cause body movements, lower back and abdominal pain occurring intermittently, fetal Qi rushing to the chest, restlessness, or sudden vaginal bleeding. Ju Hua Tang (Chrysanthemum Decoction) is indicated.
*Ingredients:* Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum Flower, size of a chicken egg, 1 piece), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed, 1 sheng), Ma Huang (Ephedra Stem, de-segmented, 3 liang), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin, roasted, 3 liang), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted, 2 liang), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, 1.5 liang), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 liang), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, washed, 2 liang), Da Zao (Jujube, 12 pieces, split).
*Preparation:* Chop the ten ingredients. Boil in 8 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and the gelatin, simmer until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. Rest warmly. Sweating is expected to expel pathogens.
If the fourth month's pregnancy has been injured, the Tiao Zhong Tang (Middle-Joint Regulating Decoction) should be taken in advance.
*Ingredients:* Bai Shao (White Peony Root, 4 liang), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted), Xiong Qiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Xu Duan (Dipsacus Root), Sheng Li Gen Bai Pi (White Bark of Fresh Plum Root), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, each 3 liang), Wu Mei (Mume Fruit, 1 piece).
*Preparation:* Chop the twelve ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of water until 3 sheng remains. Divide into four doses: three during the day and one at night. Take another dose eight days later. Another version includes Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, 2 liang).
In the fifth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Fire to form its Qi. Sleep late. Bathe and wash clothes. Live in deep, secluded places. Wear thick clothing. Inhale morning sunlight to avoid Cold disasters. Eat rice and barley. Eat beef and mutton soups. Season with Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) and balance the Five Flavors. This is called nourishing Qi to stabilize the Zang organs.
During the fifth month, the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Taiyin internally connects to the Spleen. In the fifth month, the fetal limbs form. Avoid extreme hunger or satiety. Do not eat dry foods. Do not expose oneself to excessive heat. Avoid overexertion and fatigue.
In the fifth month, fetal hair begins to grow. If Heat predominates, dizziness, mental confusion, and vomiting may occur. If Cold predominates, abdominal fullness and pain, and frequent urination may occur. Sudden fright may cause limb pain, chills and fever, unpredictable fetal movement, severe abdominal pain leading to fainting, or sudden vaginal bleeding. Ejiao Tang (Donkey-Hide Gelatin Decoction) is indicated.
*Ingredients:* Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin, roasted, 4 liang), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, 1 liang), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed, 1 sheng), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger, 6 liang), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit), Xuan Fu Hua (Inula Flower), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Bai Shao (White Peony Root).
*Preparation:* Chop the ten ingredients. Boil in 9 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add 3 sheng of clear wine and the gelatin, simmer on low heat until 3.5 sheng remains. Divide into four doses: three during the day and one at night. Take before meals. A second dose will cure it; if not cured, continue taking. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum Thallus) and Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage).
If the fifth month's pregnancy has been injured, the An Zhong Tang (Middle-Stabilizing Decoction) should be taken in advance.
*Ingredients:* Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, each 2 liang), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root), Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, dried), Xiong Qiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, each 2 liang), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry, 5 he), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber).
*Preparation:* Chop the twelve ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water and 5 sheng of clear wine until 3.5 sheng remains. Divide into four doses: three during the day and one at night. Take another dose seven days later. Avoid [missing text].
In the sixth month of pregnancy, the fetus begins to receive the essence of Metal to form tendons. The body should undergo slight labor; do not stay still. Go out to the fields. Watch running dogs and horses. Eat meat from birds of prey and fierce beasts. This is called changing the pores and toughening the tendons to build strength and strengthen the back and spine.
During the sixth month, the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Foot Yangming internally connects to the Stomach, which governs the mouth and eyes. In the sixth month, the fetal mouth and eyes form. Balance the Five Flavors, eat sweet and delicious foods, and avoid overeating.
In the sixth month, if the fetus moves suddenly and uncomfortably, with chills and fever, abdominal distension, body edema, fright, sudden vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain resembling labor, and painful restlessness in hands and feet, Mai Men Dong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction) is indicated.
*Ingredients:* Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber, heart removed, 1 sheng), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, each 1 liang), Gan Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, dried, 3 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, 2 liang), Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin, 4 liang).
*Preparation:* Chop the eight ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water until reduced by half. Add 2 sheng of clear wine and the gelatin, simmer until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. After each dose, walk for the distance a person covers in three or four li, consuming millet porridge in between. Avoid Hai Zao (Sargassum Thallus), Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage), and Yuan Yi.
If the sixth month's pregnancy has been injured, the Chai Hu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) should be taken in advance.

Move and bend/stretch to circulate Qi and Blood. From this point on, reside in dry places, avoid Cold in diet, and eat rice regularly to tighten the pores. This is called nourishing bones and strengthening teeth.
During the seventh month, the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian nourishes the fetus. Acupuncture and moxibustion on this meridian should be avoided. The Hand Taiyin internally connects to the Lung, which governs skin and hair. In the seventh month, fetal skin and hair form. Do not speak loudly, do not cry, do not wear thin clothes, do not bathe, and do not drink cold liquids.
In the seventh month, sudden fright, shaking, abdominal pain, sudden vaginal bleeding, cold extremities, pulse resembling Shang Han (Cold Damage), irritability, abdominal fullness, shortness of breath, and chronic stiffness in the neck, lower back, and back indicate the need for Cong Bai Tang (Scallion White Decoction).
