To treat carbuncles that are hard as stone, with large nodules and unchanged color, or referred to as "stone carbuncle" (Shi Yong), use the Lian Shi San (Calcined Stone Powder) prescription.
Lu Jiao (Deer Horn, 8 liang; alternatively Bai Hui/White Ash), Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix, 3 liang), Cu Li Huang Shi (Coarse-textured Yellow Stone, 1 jin). For the Huang Shi: use 5 sheng of vinegar, first heat the stone until red-hot, immerse it in the vinegar, then reheat and immerse again, repeating until half of the vinegar is consumed.
Crush and sieve the above three ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with the remaining vinegar to form a paste-like consistency. Apply thickly to the affected area. Reapply when dry. Continue until cured. Prepare anew if needed. [This formula also applies to] various fistulas and scrofula (Luo Li).
Another prescription:
Grinding Lu Jiao (Deer Horn) and Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome) alone for topical application is not as effective as the above prescription. (*Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 24)
For treating swelling that becomes extremely hard and has a root, named "stone carbuncle":
Moxibustion on the swollen area for 300 moxa cones (Zhuang). Stones should break out and be expelled. If they do not expel, increase the number of cones until expulsion occurs. Carbuncles, stone carbuncles, knotted sinews, and scrofula must not be punctured with needle-angles; doing so can be fatal. (*Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 24)
Another prescription for unruptured carbuncles:
Mix herbal powder with egg white. Apply thickly onto paper and paste it onto the lesion. Replace when dry. The pain will naturally subside and heal. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, Vol. 5)
Ding Du (Tetanus toxin/Ding poison) forms a sore where flesh protrudes like a fish eye, appearing dark red/black and painful. This is caused by the condensation of cold toxins transforming into this disease. At the onset, administer decoction and treat according to the methods for Dan Disease (Erysipelas) to achieve cure. (*Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 30)
To treat toxic vapors attacking the lower legs/shins with chronic non-healing sores:
Grind Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) into fine powder. Wash the sore with salt water solution, pat dry, and apply the powder. Change every two days. One can bear heavy loads and traverse dangerous terrain. In famine years, elderly people and children who have fasted cannot distinguish it from rice cakes, calling it Mi Fu (Rice Cakes). (*Zhenglei Bencao*, Vol. 6)
Prescription for foot pain:
Boil Shui Liao (Polygonum Hydropiper) in water. When the temperature is warm and appropriate, frequently wash/rinse the sore with the liquid. It will settle and heal naturally when dry. (*Zhenglei Bencao*, Vol. 11)
There is a condition called Qi Swelling (Qi Zhong). Its symptoms resemble carbuncles but present as headless, hollow swelling with unchanged skin color. The skin feels tight and painful; touching it causes immediate pain. This results from internal heat combined with wind exposure, followed by sudden cold contraction, leading to the formation of Qi swelling. It is advisable to take Wu Xiang Lian Qiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction), perform acupuncture with white needles to drain Qi, and apply Ji Li Bo (Tribulus Plaster) or Xiao Dou Bo (Adzuki Bean Plaster), both of which can resolve the swelling.
Ji Li Bo Prescription: Ji Li Zi (Tribulus Fruit, 2 sheng), sifted. Mix with sesame oil to form a paste. Cook until scorched black. Spread onto fine, old, cooked cloth. Cut slightly larger than the swollen area. Do not...
Xiao Dou Bo Prescription: If Ji Li is unavailable, pound adzuki beans, sift them, mix with egg white, and apply to the swelling. Reapply when dry. Both can resolve the swelling. (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 16)
There is a condition called Qi Pain (Qi Tong). Suddenly, a specific spot in the body experiences pain as severe as being beaten by a club, unbearable, wandering left and right within the body, occurring at specific times. During pain episodes, there is slight heat; during quiet periods, the area feels as if covered by cold water, frost, or snow. This is caused by contracting warm winds in winter, which are then abruptly checked by cold in spring and summer. Instead of developing into Warm Disease, it transforms into Qi Pain.
It is advisable to first take several doses of Wu Xiang Lian Qiao Tang (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction) and Zhu Li Tang (Bamboo Sap Decoction), massage with Dan Shen Gao (Salvia Ointment), and apply warm compresses using willow bark boiled in white wine. Where red spots appear, bloodletting is indicated. During this period, take Bai Wei San (Cynanchum Powder). (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 16)
Xiao Zhu Li Tang (Small Bamboo Sap Decoction), a prescription for Qi Pain:
Dan Zhu Li (Light Bamboo Sap, 2 sheng), Ye Gan (Glehnia Root, 2 liang), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, 2 liang), Yin Yu (Skimmia Root Bark, 0.5 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, 0.5 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 2 liang), Mu Fang Ji (Stephania Tetrandra Root, 2 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, 2 liang), Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, 2 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 liang), Ma Huang (Ephedra Herb, 1 liang), Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root, 2 liang), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, 2 liang).
These fifteen ingredients are cut/chopped. Boil in 9 sheng of water until reduced by half. Then add Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap). Boil until 3 sheng remain. Divide into four doses. Children divide into five doses.
Bai Wei San (Cynanchum Powder), for treating Qi Pain caused by Wind-Heat binding and knotting, wandering left and right in the body, possibly accompanied by malignant nodules. After accumulating doses of decoctions, if residual heat remains unsettled, use this Bai Wei San to clear residual heat.
Bai Wei (Cynanchum Atratum Root, 6 fen), Wei Rui (Polygonatum Odoratum Rhizome, 4 fen), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 4 fen), Ma Huang (Ephedra Herb, 3 fen), Qin Jiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, 5 fen), Tian Dong (Asparagus Cochinchinensis Root, 4 fen), Shu Jiao (Sichuan Pepper, 2 fen), Mu Fang Ji (Stephania Tetrandra Root, 4 fen), Zi Hu (Notopterygium Root, 3 fen), Cao (Herb, 2 fen), Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root, 4 fen), Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, 4 fen), Wu Tou (Aconite Root, 2 fen), Shu (Atractylodes Rhizome, 6 fen), Ren Shen (Ginseng Root, 4 fen), Ye Gan (Glehnia Root, 6 fen), Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit, 4 fen), Qing Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root, 4 fen), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root, 6 fen), Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root)...
These twenty ingredients are crushed and sifted through silk. Take one Cun Bi (square-inch spoonful) mixed with vinegar juice, gradually increasing to two Bi, three times daily. Children reduce dosage according to age. For mild toxicity, wine may be used. (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 16)
Ye Gan Gao (Glehnia Ointment), for treating Wind-Heat toxic swelling and redness:
Ye Gan (Glehnia Root, 2 liang), Chang Lu (Inula Root, cut 1 sheng), Fang Ji (Stephania Tetrandra Root, 4 liang), Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, 3 liang).
Cut the above four ingredients. Simmer in 3 sheng of lard (Zhu Gao) over low heat until Chang Lu turns slightly scorched yellow. Strain and remove dregs. Rub onto the affected area. (*Yi Xin Fang*, Vol. 16)
Wu Xiang Tang (Five-Aromatic Decoction), primarily for malignant Qi toxic swelling:
Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Wood), Qing Mu Xiang (Vladimiria Root), Xun Lu Xiang (Frankincense), Ji She Xiang (Clove Bud) (each 1 liang), She Xiang (Musk, 0.5 liang).
Cut the above five ingredients. Boil in 5 sheng of water until 1.5 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. (*Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 24)
Da Zi (Large Soaking) for Toxic Swelling, Sheng Ma Tang Prescription:
Sheng Ma (Cimicifuga Rhizome, 1 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, 3 liang), Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit, 20 pieces), Lou Lu (Euphorbia Humifusa Root, 2 liang), Shuo Di Gen (Commelina Root, 5 liang), Mang Xiao (Mirabilite, 2 liang).
Cut the above six ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of water until 7 sheng remain. Let cool. Divide and soak the swollen area. Keep moist to resolve. (*Waitai Miyao*, Vol. 30)
Prescription for Swelling:
Willow branches, thickness of a toe, length of 3 chi, 20 pieces. Boil in water until very hot. Wrap the swollen area with old cloth and wash/rinse with the hot water. It will heal immediately. (*Zhenglei Bencao*, Vol. 14)
