[Apricot Seed / Xing Ren]
Taste: Sweet and bitter. Nature: Warm, slightly toxic. Meridians entered: Lung (Fei) and Large Intestine (Da Chang). Indications: Mainly treats wheezing and coughing due to rebellious Qi in the chest, difficult defecation due to Qi stagnation in the Large Intestine, as well as throat obstruction with loss of voice (Hou Bi Yin). For phlegm accumulation causing restlessness, traumatic injuries from metal weapons, various sores caused by wind-heat, various syndromes of stroke (Zhong Feng), snake bites, dog bites, and pain and itching of the vulva, it can be crushed and applied externally. Preparation: Soak in boiling water, remove the skin and tips, then stir-fry. It works better when processed with heat. Antagonistic herbs: Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix); incompatible with Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Detoxification: Resolves tin poisoning and toxicity from eating dog meat. Note: Apricot seeds with two kernels can be fatal. Apricots should not be eaten in excess, as they can damage sinews, bones, and eyesight.
Commentary: Apricot seed enters the Lung meridian, which aligns with the classic saying: "The Lung dislikes rebellious Qi; urgently use bitter flavors to drain it." The Large Intestine shares a interior-exterior relationship with the Lung and is responsible for transportation and excretion, so Apricot seed is also suitable for entering the Large Intestine meridian. According to *Zuo Ci Mi Jue*, Apricot seed is called "Grass Golden Elixir," and long-term consumption leads to immortality. However, medical formularies state that those who consume Apricot seed often suffer from diarrhea or discharge from the umbilicus after two or three years, conditions that are difficult to treat. These two theories contradict each other. Nevertheless, Apricot seed primarily has a dispersing action, allowing phlegm to dissipate through the interstices (Cou Li), and it possesses slight toxicity.
Lei Gong states: When using Apricot seed, soak in boiling water, briefly remove the skin membrane and tips, split into two halves. Boil with Bai Huo Shi (White Fire Stone), Wu Dou (Black Soybean), and Apricot seed in three parts, using flowing water from the east, in a pot from Si hour to Wei hour. If the Apricot seed turns brownish-yellow, do not use it. To process one jin (approx. 500g) of Apricot seed, use one jin of Bai Huo Shi and three he (approx. 300ml) of Wu Dou. Add water continuously without interruption, which is the optimal method.
[Peach Kernel / Tao Ren]
Taste: Bitter and sweet. Nature: Neutral, non-toxic. Meridians entered: Liver (Gan) and Large Intestine (Da Chang). Indications: Mainly treats blood stasis, blood obstruction, masses and accumulations (Zheng Jia), evil spirits, dryness of blood leading to constipation, kills three types of parasites, and stops heart pain. Preparation: Soak in boiling water, remove the skin and tips, then stir-fry. Peach Flower (Tao Hua): Mainly kills ghost-related diseases (Gui Zhu), beautifies complexion, promotes urination and defecation, and expels internal parasites. Do not use double-petaled peach flowers, as they cause epistaxis (Bi Nu). Peach Hairs (Tao Mao): Mainly treats blood masses, accumulations, metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea. Peach Insect (Tao Chong): Mainly kills demonic entities and evil influences. Peach Leaf (Tao Ye): Mainly treats malignant qi and sudden external pathogenic invasion (Ke Wu), parasitic infections causing pain and itching in the vulva, and parasites in sores. Peach Fruit (Tao Shi): Excessive consumption causes fever.
Commentary: Peach Kernel promotes blood circulation, making it suitable for the Liver meridian; its moistening nature makes it suitable for the Large Intestine meridian. *Dian Shu* states: "Peach is the essence of the five woods," therefore its flowers, kernels, fruits, and leaves can all suppress evil and kill ghosts.
Lei Gong states: When using Peach Kernel, soak to remove the skin and tips. Boil with Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Wu Dou (Black Soybean) in a clay pot for one fu shi (approx. 2 hours). Then strain and split by hand. Use only if the kernel heart is golden yellow. Do not use the flower. Double-petaled peach flowers can cause persistent epistaxis and jaundice. Select clean kernels, store in a silk bag, and hang under the eaves to dry. Regarding "Ghost Skull" (Gui Du Lou - likely a specific traditional processing term or metaphorical reference to unshed fruit/nuts): Do not use dried peach fruits. The so-called "Ghost Skull" refers specifically to the fruit of the double-petaled peach that remains on the tree and does not fall, harvested in the eleventh month, considered a miraculous preparation. For final processing: Steam with wine from Si hour to Wei hour, dry-roast, slice with a copper knife, and dry-roast again to extract the flesh/kernel meat.
