Lei Gong said: When using Coicis Semen (Yiyiren, 薏苡仁), do not use the large, tasteless grains. These large grains are what people at that time called Jingmi (Japonica Oryzae Semen, 粳米). True Coicis Semen has small grains, is greenish-white in color, tastes sweet, and sticks to the teeth when chewed.
If one ounce of Coicis Semen is required, boil it together with two ounces of Glutinis Oryzae Semen (Jingmi, 糯米) until the glutinous rice is cooked. Discard the glutinous rice and use only the Coicis Semen.
Alternatively, boiling it in salt water constitutes a different special processing method, which is also acceptable.
Lei Gong said: For Ligustri Ramulus et Folium (Luoshiteng, 络石藤), regardless of the quantity, finely chop it, soak it in wine overnight, strain it, dry it in the sun, and it is ready for use.
Lei Gong said: For Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi, 远志), the heart must be removed first. If the heart is not removed, ingestion will cause chest stuffiness. After removing the heart, soak it in decoction of prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) overnight, strain it, dry it in the sun, and use it.
Lei Gong said: For Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛), after harvesting, dry it in the shade. When preparing for use, cut off the roots, soil, and head with a copper knife, chop it, soak it in Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) decoction overnight, strain it the next morning, dry it in the sun, and use it. Do not take it on an empty stomach, as it may lead to urinary incontinence.
Lei Gong said: For Gnaphalii Herba (Tianmingjing, 天名精), carefully pick out plants with double leaves, as they are harmful if ingested. Remove the head and soil, soak in melon juice overnight, strain it the next morning, dry it in the sun, and use it.
Lei Gong said: For Epimedii Folium (Yinyanghuo, 淫羊藿), first remove the head and soil, soak in wine overnight, strain it, and dry it in the sun. Then steam it with butter from Si hour to You hour (approx. 9 AM to 7 PM), and finally slowly bake it dry. Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu, 石斛) locks fluids and astringes male vitality. However, processed Epimedii Folium (Yinyanghuo, 淫羊藿) like this, if taken for a full yi (ancient weight unit), will permanently prevent bone pain.
Lei Gong said: For Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi, 枸杞子), soak in Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi, 枸杞子) decoction overnight until slightly soft. Strain it, then soak in wine for one shichen (approx. 2 hours), strain it again, and simmer it together with Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花) until scorched yellow. Remove the Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, 菊花), wipe dry with cloth, and use it.
Lei Gong said: For Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma (Weilingxian, 威灵仙), first wipe off the fleshy hairs with cloth, then soak in fermented grain water for two shichen (approx. 4 hours). Strain it and bake it dry over willow wood fire. If taking ten taels of this herb, pork must not be consumed; if taken for three years, pork must never be consumed for life.
Lei Gong said: After harvesting, rub off the hairs on the leaves and stems with coarse cloth. Soak in decoction of prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) for one shichen (approx. 2 hours), take out, slice, dry in the sun, and it is ready for use.
