This text is from *Han Shi Yi Tong* (Han's Medical Guide), primarily recording the preparation and usage of "Qingnang Wan" (Green Bag Pill) along with related deer blood and deer marrow preparations, as well as two formulas where Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) serves as the principal herb.
Paragraph 1: Select a tamed male deer, regardless of age. Every day, decoct one liang of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) in water for the deer to drink, and mix the dregs with fodder to feed the deer. On the eve of use, reduce the deer's food intake; on the morning of the next day while fasting, bind the deer to a bed with cloth, positioning its head low and tail raised. Use a three-edged needle to pierce the large pore anterior to the eye, known as Tianchi (BL-1). Insert a silver tube approximately three cun long towards the nasal bridge to suck out the blood. Mix this blood with medicinal wine (any type may be chosen, such as wine boiled with Bazhen San [Eight Treasure Powder] plus Agarwood and Costus Root). Allow the deer to drink as much as possible. Perform this once a month; the deer will remain healthy. If obtaining blood from a slaughtered deer, allow it to drink wine to intoxication while the blood is still hot, which is also excellent.
Paragraph 2: For deer used in this banquet/preparation, extract all brain marrow, bone marrow, and spinal cord, and decoct them together into oil. Filter until clear. Weigh one liang of deer oil and add two liang of refined honey. Continue refining until they are fully integrated. Seal in porcelain containers for storage. When taking other tonic prescriptions, regardless of the specific formula, use this deer oil as an adjuvant to mix with the medicine, following the method described above.
Paragraph 3: Whether the deer is hunted, domesticated, or from a market, take the marrow from its tibial bones, decoct it into oil, filter it clean, and add honey. Refine it according to the previous method. When using, combine with ancient formulas such as Yao Ya Gao (Waist Rubbing Ointment) or Jiu Yang Dan (Nine Yang Pill). Dissolve a small amount in Old Ginger Decoction and rub/massage onto Shenshu (BL-23). This greatly tonifies Yuan Qi (Original Qi). For joint pain attributed to deficiency-cold, the effect is miraculous.
Paragraph 4: This formula was transmitted by Zhiyi Weng at Yellow Crane Tower. It is named so because he practiced medicine lightly regarding profit. Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) [When Qi loses its balance, disease arises; Xiangfu acts as the Sovereign herb, fulfilling this function.] Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) [Wherever disease resides, there is pathogenic fire; using raw Huanglian alone does not conform to the standard method of draining Heart Fire.] These two herbs use Cyperi Rhizoma as the principal agent, with the dosage of Coptidis Rhizoma reduced by half. Select pure materials, grind them into an extremely fine powder, and make pills using water paste, sized like wu zi (walnut seeds). If suffering from external contraction, administer with Ginger and Scallion Decoction; for internal injury, administer with Rice Drink; for Blood disorders, administer with Wine; for Qi disorders, administer with Aucklandia Decoction; for Phlegm disorders, administer with Ginger Decoction; for Fire disorders, administer with plain warm water. Other cases can be inferred analogously.
Paragraph 5: This formula was taught to Shao Zhenren when he prayed for his mother's illness, received from a Fangshi (Daoist alchemist/physician); I received it from a certain female physician. Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu Zi) [Slightly stir-fried, quantity unrestricted, serves as the principal herb.] Linderae Cortex (Wuyao) [Slightly soaked, dosage reduced by one-third compared to Xiangfu.] Grind the above into a fine powder. Boil with water and vinegar, then mix to form pills sized like wu zi. Use appropriate guiding agents according to symptoms; for example, administer with Tea for headache, or Ginger Decoction for Phlegm. Administering with Wine is generally superior.
