One batch is divided into ten doses, stored in silk bags. For every five sheng of rice, brew one zun of wine. Decoct one bag, store in a cellar for a long time before drinking.
(This prescription was formulated for my elder brother's fire syndrome. Wine has a hot nature; these three herbs restrain it, making it generally applicable. Boil as described previously.)
Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus [Goji Berry], 5 qian) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma [Coptis Rhizome], stir-fried, 3 qian) Lvdou (Phaseoli Volgaris Semen [Mung Bean Seed], 1 qian)
The master from Jinhua strongly dislikes refining honey by boiling in a pot, considering it not an ancient method, and thus taught this method. Take one jin of white sand honey, place it in a large porcelain bowl, boil over a double boiler (heavy soup), stirring constantly, using alternating gentle and strong heat. When the liquid dries, add water. The degree of completion is reached when a drop of honey does not scatter. Generally, one jin of honey yields half a jin after refining. Bury the jar in the soil for seven days. Whenever preparing pill formulations, use only half of the medicinal powder, mix with honey, pound ten thousand times until dry, then sprinkle the remaining powder, wrap in cloth, steam in a steamer until soft, add the rest of the powder, and repeat this process three times. Thus, the pills can be stored for a long time without becoming damp again.
(The explanation is found in Chapter 6.)
Laomi (Mainly clears stomach heat) Huangtu (Nourishes spleen, fried) Kuzhuye (Removes heat) Luobozǐ (Eliminates food stagnation) Boheye (Removes heat) Dengcao (Mainly treats night crying) Maiya (Harmonizes spleen and stomach).
Use more of the above herbs according to the specific symptoms, and less of the others. Each dose should not exceed 3 qian. Store in a bag, decoct in water, drink freely when thirsty, or add a little honey.
