(1) It can stimulate the Yang Qi of men; frequent consumption can eliminate certain diseases in men. People in the South often consume it, and this habit has been transmitted to people in the North. When people in the North consume it, various illnesses are doubled in incidence, making it even more unsuitable for them. [Xin · Jia]
(2) Emaciated individuals should not consume it. [Xin]
It directs Qi downward; long-term consumption causes emaciated individuals to become thinner. Those without this condition should not consume it. People on islands love to eat it because they lack other good vegetables and only eat this item. Long-term consumption prevents illness from arising. Consequently, rumors spread about its efficacy for people in the North. However, when people in the North consume it, illnesses arise; this is due to the incompatibility of water and soil environments. [Zheng]
It descends Heat Qi; excessive consumption causes abdominal distension. If Heat Qi obstructs the throat, decoct its juice and drink it. This is a marine plant, and its taste still carries toxicity. Therefore, all marine vegetables tend to be detrimental to humans. [Zheng]
Cold in nature, non-toxic. Treats epistaxis (nosebleed), hematemesis (vomiting blood), and Lin syndrome (dysuria): decoct roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao) and fermented soybean juice (Chi Zhi) into a thick soup, sip slowly. Additionally, it treats the five types of Lin syndrome: take a piece the size of a duck egg, boil, and consume. Additionally, fine algae in water: treats epidemic febrile diseases (Tianxing Bing) and chest oppression, crush and squeeze out the juice for oral administration. [Jia Bu]
Salty in flavor, cold in nature (another theory states warm). Treats hemorrhoids, kills parasites, and stops persistent vomiting due to Huoluan (cholera-like disease); decoct and drink the juice. Additionally, for those with vexation and oppression in the heart and abdomen, grind with cold water into a paste and drink to stop symptoms. Additionally, it disperses various sores and scabies, expels Dan Shi toxins (mineral drug residues), and neutralizes various drug poisons. Do not consume excessively, as it causes sallow complexion and reduced blood color. It kills wood-boring insects by placing it inside wood holes. All marine creatures have the ability to descend Dan Shi toxins. [Jia Bu]

(2) The local people value it, claiming it aids Yang function, but their methods of use are incorrect. Crush stems and leaves raw to obtain one he of juice, mix with one he of hot wine. Consuming it treats sudden Kidney Qi rushing to the hypochondrium, causing stabbing pain like a knife, and panting inability to lie flat. It also effectively regulates Xiao Chang Qi (Small Intestine Qi disorder). [Zheng]
