(All creatures belonging to the class of flying birds possess the function of nourishing Yang Qi. However, human Yang Qi is often in excess; if Yang is supplemented when it is already abundant, Yin will be further depleted. Wise individuals should know to avoid this.)
[All Poultry]
Any poultry that dies with its feet unextended and eyes unclosed contains toxicity and must not be consumed.
[Chicken Meat]
Difficult to digest. Consumption by patients suffering from Wind diseases may trigger an outbreak. Old chickens contain significant toxicity; consuming hens that have been brooding eggs can lead to the formation of carbuncles (deep-seated skin infections). Children under five years old who consume chicken meat may develop parasitic worms. It should not be eaten together with garlic shoots, mustard greens, plums, beef, dog meat, or carp, as this combination can cause carbuncles.
[Duck]
Slippery in nature, it promotes cold dysentery and beriberi (Hong Kong foot). It should not be eaten with garlic, plums, or soft-shell turtle. Wild ducks are suitable for consumption after the ninth lunar month without disturbing Qi flow. For those suffering from chronic heat sores that fail to heal, frequent consumption of duck meat leads to improvement.
[Goose]
Cold in nature. Consumption triggers chronic diseases, boils, and cholera. Goose eggs also trigger chronic diseases.
(All beast meats assist in generating dampness and fire; they should all be consumed sparingly.)
[All Land Beast Meats]
Beasts with forked tails, meat that does not touch dust when dropped, meat that does not retain water when cooked, meat that contracts when raw but expands when cooked, meat with unceasing fresh blood, meat with abnormal shape or color, and birds or beasts that die naturally without external wounds—all contain major toxicity and must not be consumed.
[Pork]
Although commonly used in the world, excessive consumption induces Wind, generates phlegm, and disturbs Qi. Pig kidneys regulate Kidney Qi, but excessive consumption反而 leads to Kidney deficiency and reduced fertility. Pig intestines lubricate the bowels. Pig brain damages Yang Qi. Pig snout and head promote Wind and are particularly toxic. Eating them with buckwheat causes Wind-Heat disease, leading to loss of eyebrows and beard.
[Mutton]
Sheep with a single horn or black heads with white bodies must not be consumed. Mutton should not be eaten in summer.
[Beef]
Oxen plow fields, contributing greatly to humanity; therefore, they must not be eaten. Cattle that die suddenly or from plague possess extreme toxicity capable of killing humans. Not only is their meat inedible, but even inhaling their odor can harm people.
(Fish are creatures without visible respiration in water; excessive consumption stirs internal Heat.)
[All Fish]
Among various fish, those whose eyes can close, those with reversed or absent gills, those with bead-like scales, those with white flesh, those with "Dan" character patterns on gills, and those with abnormal shapes must not be consumed.
[Carp]
Induces Wind-Heat. Patients with any Wind disease, large carbuncles, sores, scabies, malaria, or dysentery must not consume it.
[Crucian Carp]
Generates Fire. It should not be eaten with brown sugar, garlic, mustard greens, or pig liver.
[White Fish]
Promotes suppuration. Persons with sores, chronic diseases, or boils must not eat it. Overnight white fish causes abdominal coldness.
[Tansei Fish]
Triggers chronic diseases and generates infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome).
[Sturgeon]
Stirs Wind-Qi and causes sores and scabies. Excessive consumption leads to heart pain and lower back pain; children consuming it may develop abdominal masses (Jia accumulation).
[Eel]
Extremely cold. Excessive consumption causes cholera. During epidemics, consumption leads to recurrence of illness.
[Moray Eel]
Clears Heat and treats labor parasites (worms). Consumption by pregnant women causes fetal disorders. Moray eels weighing four to five jin, those that raise their heads above water, those with black spots on the belly, and those without gills must not be consumed.
[Flatfish/Changyu]
Excessive consumption is difficult to digest and generates Phlegm-Heat. Eating it with buckwheat causes loss of voice.
[Pufferfish]
Contains major toxicity. Those with incomplete blood soaking, purple-red spots on eyes, broken eggs, improper processing, or contamination with house dust cause abdominal distension and death. Washing must be extremely thorough, and cooking must be thoroughly done. Poisoning can be treated with juice from olives or reed rhizomes. Anyone taking Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Chrysanthemum, Fuzi (Aconite), or Aotou (Aconitum) will certainly die if they consume pufferfish.
