The first three months of spring are called "Fa Chen" (Sprouting and Renewal). Heaven and earth generate together, and all things flourish. One should sleep late and rise early, walk broadly in the courtyard, let hair hang loose and walk slowly, to allow the will to sprout. Nourish life rather than kill, give rather than take, reward rather than punish. This is responding to the Qi of Spring, the way of nurturing life. To violate this injures the Liver; in summer, cold transformations occur, and there is less support for growth.
Spring Qi is warm; it is suitable to eat wheat, cooling it down, not allowing it to be entirely warm. Avoid warm foods/drinks and hot clothing.
The next three months of summer are called "Fan Xiu" (Flourishing and Beauty). Heaven and Earth Qi intersect, and all things flower and bear fruit. One should sleep late and rise early, not resent the sun, keep the will free from anger, let the splendor become elegant, allow Qi to vent out, as if what one loves is outside. This is responding to the Qi of Summer, the way of nurturing growth. To violate this injures the Heart; in autumn, malaria occurs, there is less support for harvesting, and severe illness strikes at Winter Solstice.
Summer Qi is hot; it is suitable to eat beans (*Shu*), cooling them down, not allowing them to be entirely hot. Avoid warm foods/drinks, overeating, damp places, and damp clothing.
The next three months of autumn are called "Rong Ping" (Fullness and Levelness). Heaven's Qi becomes urgent, Earth's Qi becomes clear. One should sleep early and rise early, rising with the rooster, keep the will peaceful, to slow the punishment of Autumn Qi, gather and store Shen (Spirit), make Autumn Qi peaceful, do not let the will go outward, make Lung Qi clear. This is responding to the Qi of Autumn, the way of nurturing harvesting. To violate this injures the Lungs; in winter, undigested diarrhea (*Sunxie*) occurs, and there is less support for storage.
Autumn Qi is dry; it is suitable to eat sesame (*Ma*), to moisten its dryness. Avoid cold foods/drinks and cold clothing.
The last three months of winter are called "Bi Zang" (Closing and Storage). Water freezes, earth cracks. Do not disturb Yang. Sleep early and rise late, waiting for sunlight. Let the will be hidden and concealed, as if having private intentions, as if having gained something. Remove cold and seek warmth, do not let skin open and cause Qi to be frequently depleted. This is responding to the Qi of Winter, the way of nurturing storage. To violate this injures the Kidneys; in spring, flaccidity and cold limbs (*Wei Jue*) occur, and there is less support for generation.
Winter Qi is cold; it is suitable to eat millet (*Shu*), using its hot nature to treat the cold. Avoid hot foods/drinks and clothes heated by roasting/grilling.
