For infants within one month after birth, some present with trismus (lockjaw) preventing suckling and difficulty in crying. The cheeks are swollen, hard, and contain nodules; this condition is named "Tanglangzi" (Mantis Child), also referred to as "Saier". Experienced midwives would use a sharp blade to incise the inside of the cheeks, excavating hard, smooth necrotic tissue resembling the pod of *Bombyx batryticatus* (Mantis Egg-case). Applying medicine to the wound allows it to heal spontaneously. If the incision is delayed even slightly, the swelling may spread to the throat and nose, becoming incurable. Many have died from such incisions, proving it is ultimately not a good method. Now, a prescription is obtained: use 1 qian of Moschus (Shexiang), 5 fen of Cinnabar (Zhusha), and 7 river snails (*Cipangopaludina chinensis*), pound them together into a paste, and apply it to the anterior fontanelle (Xinmen). Wait for it to dry and fall off naturally; do not forcibly peel it off. For severe cases, gently prick the affected area with a needle to release blood, then apply aged ink (Chenmo) to heal. Alternatively, applying fresh chicken manure is even better. Do not recklessly use knives to cut, as this may endanger the infant's life. Later, prescriptions involving Hibiscus mutabilis flower (Furonghua) are described as most miraculous.
Another prescription: One land snail (Yanyou, see *Yaowu Bei Yao* for details) and half a qian of Vermilion (Yinzhu), grind them thoroughly together, and apply to the swollen and hardened area without wiping it off.
Another prescription: A small amount of charcoal from mulberry wood, add two or three drops of blood from a rooster's comb, plus one spoonful of salt brine, mix well, and apply frequently; this is also effective.
Another prescription: Green olive pits (Qingganlanhe, also known as Qinglan; if unavailable, salted olive pits soaked to remove saltiness can be used), grind with good vinegar into juice and apply.
Another prescription: Seven red rice beans (small, flat, and slightly reddish), grind into powder, mix with good vinegar, and apply topically; effective.
Burn chaotic hair to ash, mix with lard (Zhuyou), and apply.
See the section on "Mouth".
When a tumor rises like a mushroom in an infant's mouth, it is called "Rujun" (Milk Mushroom). When white blisters appear on the gums, it is called "Mayagan" (Horse Tooth Canker), causing the infant to refuse milk. Pick off the head with a finger; if bleeding occurs, wipe it clean with cotton. For mild cases, applying Beijing ink (Jingmo) heals it immediately. For severe cases, urgently use three silkworms infected by *Beauveria bassiana* (Jiangcan, remove silk and mouthparts), 4 fen of human bone ash (Renzhongbai), and 1 fen of Borneol (Bingpian). Grind them finely, apply to the affected area, let sit for a moment, then wash with tea using silk cloth before reapplying. Do this three to four times a day for spontaneous healing. If not healed, add 3 fen each of Borax (Pengsha), Dragon's Blood (Xuejie), and Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai); half a fen of Camellia catechu (Ercha); and 1 fen of Pearl (Yaozhu). Grind each into fine powder, mix into the previous medicine, wash and apply three to four times daily; all will heal. Alternatively, use roots of Portulaca oleracea (Machixian), bake on tiles until dry, add a little Realgar (Xionghuang), grind into powder, and insufflate into the lesion. Using the subsequent Hibiscus mutabilis prescriptions is even more miraculous.
