In infants within one hundred days after birth, countless white spots appear in the mouth. They can be wiped away, but reappear shortly after, covering the entire mouth and extending into the throat. The infant cries day and night and refuses to nurse. This condition is commonly known as "Snow Mouth" (Xue Kou) or "Goat's Mouth Cancre" (E Kou Gan). Use equal parts of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) decocted in water. Wrap a finger with silk, dip it in the solution to wipe away the white spots, then apply the white juice from the inner bark of Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbai Pi, 桑白皮) to the affected area for immediate cure. Alternatively, applying powder from aged ink stick (Chen Mo, 陈墨) is also effective. Subsequently, administer Chenpi Yiyuan San (Cinnabar and Yuan San Powder, see supplementary formulas) mixed with Decoctum Junci (Dengxin Cao Tang, 灯心汤), which prevents recurrence.
Another prescription: Burn Areca Seed (Binglang, 槟榔) until charred, grind into powder, and apply to the lesion for immediate effect. Combining this with the Hibiscus Flower formulas mentioned later yields even better results.
Newborns may present with swollen and hard cheeks, sores on the lips and tongue, eruption of "horse teeth" (milk teeth nodules), or conditions such as double tongue (Chong She), wooden tongue (Mu She), snake tongue (She She), protruding tongue (Tu She), inability to open the mouth, and refusal to nurse.
Use flowers of Hibiscus mutabilis (Furong Hua, 芙蓉花); leaves, bark, or roots are all usable. Pound them thoroughly until mushy, mix evenly with two egg whites, cook until done, let cool, and apply to the chest (Xinkou, 心口) and umbilicus (Duqi, 肚脐). Secure tightly with cloth; this has proven miraculous in repeated trials.
Another prescription: Grind raw Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) and Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia, 半夏), each 2 qian, into powder. Mix with raw egg white to form a paste, and apply to both sole centers (Yongquan, 涌泉). It heals within one week. This is an empirical formula by Linwu Shanshan for guiding heat downward. Alternatively, apply 4 qian of Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) mixed with good vinegar to the sole centers, which is also effective. If the mouth and tongue are ulcerated, insert the tail of a live crucian carp into the infant's mouth, swaying it frequently, replacing it as needed. This method clears heat-toxin from the mouth. Initially, the infant cries, but after one or two applications, the mouth feels cool, and the infant stops crying. Although the fish tail has spines, they are soft and do not injure. After treatment, the infant can nurse again and will fully recover within three days. This is a truly miraculous formula, but must use a live fish to be effective. It is essential to continue using the previous foot-application formula.
The tissue at the root of the tongue becomes congested and swollen, stacking up, appearing short and small like a tongue. Soak Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) in Bamboo Sap (Zhuli, 竹沥) overnight, extract the juice, and apply it to the lesion.
Another prescription: Mash half a seed of Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆) with four or five grains of rice into a paste the size of a soybean. Apply it to the center of Yintang (印堂). Wait until blisters form around the periphery, then remove it for immediate cure. This is effective for various tongue diseases. Combining it with the aforementioned Hibiscus Flower formulas yields even better results.
