Whenever the time comes to the fifth watch (approximately 1-3 AM), one experiences loose stools once or twice, persisting for years without cure, this is named Kidney Diarrhea (Shen Xie), caused by an excess of Yin. Use Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) [Schisandrae Fructus (Quasi-stem removed)] two liang, Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) one liang, Psoraleae Fructus (Puguzhi) four liang, Juglandis Semen (Hetaoren) four liang, boil dates with fresh ginger and form pills.
Wushen Wan (Five-God Pill): Specifically treats chronic cases of Kidney Diarrhea occurring at the fifth watch that have not healed for a long time. This pill tonifies the Ministerial Fire of the Gate of Life (Mingmen), thereby also tonifying the Spleen. Psoraleae Fructus (Puguzhi) [stir-fried, soaked in wine, then steamed] four liang, Juglandis Semen (Hetaoren) [peeled] four liang, Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi) [stir-fried] three liang, Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) [stir-fried with salt water] one liang, boil dates with fresh ginger and form pills.
Lianmi San (Lotus Seed Powder): Coix Seed (Huanglaomi) [stir-fried] three he, Lotus Seed (Lianrou) [core removed] three liang, Polyporus (Zuling), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie) [stir-fried], Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) [stir-fried] each five qian, Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) one qian, grind into fine powder. Take three qian per dose, mix with old rice decoction; its efficacy is remarkable.
Another prescription: Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) three qian [wrapped in flour, baked until cooked, remove flour, grind into powder], Frankincense (Ruxiang) one liang, grind into fine powder, use old rice flour paste to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take fifty pills per dose, swallow with warm light salt water on an empty stomach.
Another prescription: Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu) [soil-stir-fried], Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao) [stir-fried] each one liang, in winter add baked Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) five qian, grind into fine powder, form pills with rice dough the size of wutong seeds. Take fifty pills per dose, swallow with rice gruel.
Another prescription: Dry-bake Psoraleae Fructus (Puguzhi), grind into powder, take one qian. Take one pig kidney, remove white tendons and fatty membranes, split open, insert the Puguzhi powder inside and wrap tightly, steam until cooked. Do not add water when eating; consume two or three times, and it will heal itself. Extremely effective.
There are excellent prescriptions at the end of the "Verified Cases" section in the Pediatric Smallpox Chapter; refer to them. For adults and children suffering from diarrhea where food is not digested, this indicates lack of fire in the Stomach, i.e., Stomach Yang Deficiency (Wei Yang Xu). Raw Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu), genuine Poria (Yunling) each two qian, Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Chuan Nongpu) [stir-fried with ginger juice], Amomi Fructus (Sharen), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) each one qian, raw Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit (Yizhi) two qian, decoct in water and drink.
Another prescription: Shenji San (Ginseng and Atractylodes Powder), Qiwei Doukou San (Seven-Ingredient Nutmeg Powder), both found in the formulas for smallpox-related diarrhea, are extremely efficacious.
Another prescription: Persimmon cake (Shibing), burn until red-hot, place on the ground, cover with a bowl (if not covered, it turns to ash and loses medicinal properties), wait until cool, grind into powder. Mix with rice gruel and take two qian.
This is due to Cold in the Stomach. Use Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit (Yizhiren) two liang, wrap in flour and roast, decoct and drink; immediate recovery occurs.
This condition can be divided into Qi Stagnation (Qi Zhi) and Blood Stagnation (Xue Zhi). One patient suffered from this; treatment based on Qi Stagnation was ineffective. Later, using Pruni Semen (Taoren), Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), taken over several doses, resulted in recovery.
