Dysentery can also be treated. Take three seeds of Crotonis Fructus (Badou, 巴豆) and three qian of yellow beeswax, pound them together into a paste, apply it to the navel, and secure it with a silk cloth. Recovery occurs within half a day. For cases of "Jinkou Li" (dysentery with inability to eat), add three li of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) and apply together with the aforementioned medicine.
Another prescription: Use one qian each of Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Xiangbaizhi, 香白芷) and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Ganjiang, 干姜), grind them into a fine powder, and form a paste with honey. First, wash the navel with wine; after it becomes warm, apply the paste. Then, heat a shoe sole and use it to moxibustion-iron the paste over the navel. Recovery occurs when the qi circulation is restored.
Qiwei Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient Powder for Strengthening the Spleen; see the section on "San Xiao" / Three Wasting-Thirst syndromes) has proven effective in numerous trials.
The use of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) is most contraindicated in dysentery, as its administration damages the stomach qi and makes treatment difficult. However, Mr. Ni Han Chu's three prescriptions for dysentery all contain this herb, which seems inappropriate; those with weak stomachs should exercise caution in their use.
Dysentery is a perilous and severe condition involving life and death. Not only do contemporary physicians often treat it improperly, but among the thousands of methods from ancient and modern times, few grasp the correct principle, thus failing to achieve rapid and complete recovery. What makes the present prescriptions remarkable? It is because they do not adhere rigidly to established formulas. What makes the theoretical discussion profound? It is because it does not cling to conventional theories.
The ingredients and prescriptions are as follows:
Initial Decoction: Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuan Huanglian, 川黄连, remove rhizome base), Scutellariae Radix (Tiao Huangqin, 条黄芩), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Sheng Baishao, 生白芍), and Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha Rou, 山楂肉) each 1.2 qian; Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Chen Zhike, 陈枳壳, remove pith); [Text unclear/erroneous: "Zi Nong", possibly a typo for another herb]; and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香) 0.3 qian. Decoct and take orally. This prescription... [Text fragment: "Yu Zuo" implies layout error].
Modified Decoction: Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuan Lian, 川莲), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), and Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍, stir-fried with wine) each 0.6 qian; Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha Rou, 山楂肉) 1 qian; Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Juhong, 橘红), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Qingpi, 青皮), Arecae Semen (Binglang, 槟榔), and Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu, 地榆) each 0.4 qian; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草, honey-fried) 0.3 qian; Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) 0.5 qian; Persicam Semen (Taoren Fen, 桃仁粉) 0.6 qian; Carthami Flos (Honghua, 红花) 0.3 qian; and Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 木香, ground and mixed in) 0.2 qian. Add three bowls of water, decoct, and take.
Restorative Decoction: Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuan Lian, 川莲) and Scutellariae Radix (Tiao Qin, 条芩) each 0.6 qian, stir-fried with wine; Paeoniae Radix (Shaoyao, 芍药, stir-fried with wine) 0.4 qian; Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae (Juhong, 橘红) 0.6 qian; whole Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Quandanggui, 全当归); and Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) [Text cuts off, implying substitution if unavailable].
The above three prescriptions are effective upon use. If there is no effect, it is likely that tonifying agents such as Ginseng Radix (Renshen, 人参) and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) were administered too early in the initial stage, trapping the pathogenic factor inside. Over time, the healthy qi becomes deficient while the pathogenic factor grows stronger, leading to a lingering condition. Tonic and astringent methods will exacerbate the pathogen, while clearing and draining methods will worsen the looseness/diarrhea, eventually reaching an incurable state. Even with miraculous prescriptions, nothing can be done; this is due to the initial misuse of warm-tonifying treatments. For pregnant women, remove Persicam Semen (Taoren, 桃仁), Carthami Flos (Honghua, 红花), and Arecae Semen (Binglang, 槟榔).
