Using *Shixiao San* (Pain-Relieving Powder) from the section on Qi Pain is most excellent.
A woman suffered from extreme blood and Qi pain after childbirth, to which various medicines were ineffective. Later, she ate roasted sweet potatoes (*Dioscorea opposita*, also known as Huangshu) cooked over a charcoal fire and was cured. Sweet potato is typically considered an agent that causes Qi stagnation; it is puzzling why eating it had the opposite effect.
This condition is caused by failed blood (stagnant blood) flowing into the Liver Meridian. The Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian traverses the hypochondriac region, thus causing hypochondriac pain. The symptoms may be either deficiency or excess, and treatment must be differentiated accordingly to avoid error. If there is distension under the hypochondrium that cannot be touched by hand, this indicates stagnant blood; one should remove the blood using *Xionggui Xiegan Tang* (Szechuan Lovage and Angelica Decoction to Drain the Liver): *Dangguiwei* (Angelica Sinensis Root Tail), *Chuanxiong* (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), *Qingpi* (Green Citrus Peel), *Zhike* (Bitter Orange Fruit), *Xiangfu* (Cyperus Rotundus Rhizome, stir-fried with child's urine), *Honghua* (Carthamus Tinctorius Flower), and *Taoren* (Prunus Persica Seed), each 2 qian. Decoct in water, add 1 zhong of child's urine and 1 zhong of wine, and take orally. If there is pain under the hypochondrium that is relieved by pressure, with Qi moving through the sinews and bones resembling the sensation of *Ben Tun* (rushing bull), this is due to excessive blood loss leading to Liver deficiency. Use *Danggui Dihuang Tang* (Angelica and Rehmannia Decoction): *Dangguishen* (Angelica Sinensis Root Body), *Baishao* (White Peony Root), *Shudihuang* (Prepared Rehmannia Root, all washed with wine), *Dangshen* (Codonopsis Pilosula Root), *Gancao* (Licorice Root), *Chenpi* (Aged Tangerine Peel), and *Rougui* (Cinnamon Bark), each 1 qian. Use fresh ginger and jujube as guides, decoct in water, and take orally.
After childbirth, excessive blood loss leads to a deficit of Yin blood, causing Yang Qi to lose its anchor. The head is the convergence point of all Yang meridians; when Yang Qi rushes upward to the head, it causes headache. By tonifying Yin blood, Yang Qi can circulate normally, and the headache will cease spontaneously. It is appropriate to use *Xionggui Tang* (Szechuan Lovage and Angelica Decoction): *Chuanxiong* and *Danggui* (Angelica Sinensis Root), each 5 qian (both washed and stir-fried), five scallion heads with roots, three slices of fresh ginger. Decoct in water and take orally.
Additionally, if failed blood remains in the uterus at the Jueyin position, and its meridian ascends to pierce the vertex causing pain, it is appropriate to use *Heishen San* (Black Divine Powder) (see previous text).
After childbirth, excessive blood loss results in insufficient Ying (Nutrient) blood and unguarded Wei (Defensive) Qi. The inability to consolidate the skin pores and interstices causes sweat to leak out easily. One must urgently stop the sweating, lest Wind-Cold invade due to the deficiency and generate other diseases. It is appropriate to use *Mahuanggen Tang* (Ephedra Root Decoction): *Dangguishen* (Angelica Sinensis Root Body, washed with wine), honey, *Mahuanggen* (Ephedra Root), *Taidangshen* (Codonopsis Pilosula Root), and *Zhi Gancao* (Honey-fried Licorice Root), each 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally.
If dizziness and sweating occur, this is called "Stomach Sweat," indicating extreme deficiency. Urgently use *Zhi Huangqi* (Honey-fried Astragalus Root), *Taidangshen* (Codonopsis Pilosula Root; Ren Shen/Ginseng Root is better), and *Zhi Gancao* (Honey-fried Licorice Root), each 2 qian, along with one piece of *Shu Fuzi* (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root). Decoct in water and take orally.
If sweating does not stop and Wind pathogen invades, causing sudden fainting, deviation of the mouth and eyes, and flexion of the limbs stiffening like opisthotonos, this is a critical condition. Urgently use *Guizhi* (Cinnamon Twig), *Gegen* (Pueraria Lobata Root), *Baishao* (White Peony Root), *Gancao* (Licorice Root), *Zhi Huangqi* (Honey-fried Astragalus Root), and *Dangguishen* (Angelica Sinensis Root Body), each 2 qian, and *Shu Fuzi* (Prepared Aconite Lateral Root), 0.5 qian. Pry open the mouth and administer the decoction. This is also a critical condition, with many cases being untreatable.
