This is caused by blood entering the Lung. Use Su Mu (Sappan Wood) 2 liang, decoct with 2 cups of water until 1 cup remains, remove the Su Mu residue, add Tai Shen (Codonopsis Radix) 1 liang ground into powder, adjust the dosage as needed for administration; the efficacy is difficult to fully describe.
The Heart is the master of Blood. If a patient has latent cold pathogen internally due to postpartum deficiency-cold, causing Blood to coagulate and fail to circulate, it rushes upward to strike the collateral vessels of the Heart, resulting in Heart pain. Treat it simply with Da Yan Mi Tang (Great Rock Honey Decoction); once the Cold dissipates, the Blood vessels will flow and meridians will unblock, and the Heart pain will cease naturally. If mistakenly treated as stagnant Blood and attacked with purgatives, extreme deficiency will ensue, making the Cold even more severe, gradually transmitting to the true meridians of the Heart, transforming into Zhen Xin Tong (True Heart Pain) leading to death.
Da Yan Mi Tang: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, stir-fried), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
Postpartum women often have deficient Middle Qi, unable to move Blood, causing Blood stagnation. This may result in amenorrhea or incomplete lochia discharge. Stagnant Blood enters the abdomen, causing abdominal pain that comes and goes, feeling like stabbing, with the area being tender to touch. It is suitable to use Hei Shen San (Black God Powder) (see previous section) or Shi Xiao San (Time-Saving Powder) (see Volume 3, Section on Various Qi Pains).
There are also cases where cold pathogen invades the Zi Men (Gate of the Womb) during childbirth and enters the lower abdomen, or improper sitting and lying allow wind-cold pathogen to enter due to deficiency; this is a Cold syndrome. However, there is no distension nor palpable mass. Use Jin Ling Zi San (Melia Toosendan Powder): Chuan Lian Zi (Toosendan Fructus, pitted), Xiao Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus), Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) each 1 qian, Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) 4 fen.
This arises from accumulated Blood before delivery and Qi deficiency after delivery, with lochia not yet exhausted; new Blood battles with old Blood. Commonly known as Er Zhen Tong (Child Pillow Pain), it belongs to the category of Xue Jia (Blood Mass). Use Dang Gui Yuan Hu Suo Tang (Angelica Tail and Corydalis Decoction): Dang Gui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yuan Hu Suo (Corydalidis Rhizoma) each 1.5 qian, Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen) each 1 qian, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) each 5 fen. Decoct with 1 cup of water and 1 cup of wine until 1 cup remains, add 1 cup of Tong Bian (Human Urine, preferably from a healthy child) and take together. Alternatively, use Shan Zha Rou (Crataegi Fructus) 1 liang, decoct with water to make 1 cup, add 5-6 qian of Red Sugar and 1-2 small cups of good wine, take hot on an empty stomach to expel stagnant Blood for relief. Using Shi Xiao San (Time-Saving Powder) (see various Qi Pain sections) is also excellent.
Yang Rou Tang (Mutton Decoction): A divine prescription for treating upper abdominal pain, lower abdominal pain, and Er Zhen Tong. Lean mutton 0.5 jin, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) each 5 qian, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) 1 liang. Decoct with 10 cups of water until 3 cups remain and take. Alternatively, stew mutton with old ginger to eat, or stew with Prepared Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), both are effective.
