Olive pits are burnt to charcoal while retaining their medicinal properties, ground into powder, mixed with a small amount of Calomel (Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite), and applied with sesame oil for miraculous effects.
Another prescription: Shell clams (Arca inflata) are ground extremely fine, mixed with hemp oil for application. If the area is moist, dry powder is sprinkled directly; complete recovery occurs in a few days. This is a secret transmission.
Another prescription: Yanghe Jiening Paste (see section on "Zu Ju" / Obstructed Carbuncles) is applied overnight for cure; three applications are used to conclude treatment if ulcerated. This is a formula from Linwu Shanshanren.
Another prescription: Bletilla striata (Baiji) is ground and applied topically for cure.
Another prescription: Horse manure is boiled, and the affected area is soaked; recovery occurs within half a day.
Another prescription: Radish greens and tangerine peel are decocted in water for washing first, then crab shells are burnt to ash, ground, mixed with hemp oil, and applied.
Another prescription: During the period when summer heat is latent, garlic is crushed into a paste and applied to areas where frostbite occurred in the previous year. It is washed off after one day and night, and reapplied after three or four days. If applied continuously every day, blisters will form and skin will break. By doing so, even in extreme cold during that winter, frostbite will not recur. For children's hands, feet, and other parts that have not yet suffered frostbite, applying it twice can enhance cold resistance. This method can be passed on to boatmen and porters, which is also an act of virtue.
Regarding various prescriptions for this condition, those cured by using snake meat must strictly abstain from killing and practice releasing life to achieve full recovery.
In Hansen's disease (Leprosy / Da Ma Feng), there must be areas of numbness on the body where needle pricks cause no pain, before symptoms manifest externally. If there is no numbness, it is not Hansen's disease. Although the whole body may be numb, external manifestations appear after several months; although severe, it is relatively easy to treat. However, if the disease has persisted for years and gone deep, causing deformity and disfigurement—such as a collapsed nose, crumbling flesh, detached fingers, and perforated soles—it becomes difficult to treat. Xiao Xiaoting of Jiangxi authored two volumes of "Ma Men Quan Shu," specializing in treating Hansen's disease. His discussion on the etiology is the most thorough, and his therapeutic methods are extremely miraculous. The printing blocks are preserved at a carving shop on Shuangmen Di in Guangdong Province.
Hansen's disease is colloquially referred to as "Zheng Bao" (Karmic Retribution), which does not seem like nonsense. If one believes their sins are inescapable and sincerely vows to do good, human effort can alter destiny. Even if one believes they have committed no wrongs, they should still strive to perform good deeds. Such good deeds include observing propriety and law, maintaining benevolent thoughts, acting upon seeing goodness, and especially being cautious about abstaining from killing and practicing releasing life. If one can do so, not only will the illness heal easily, but it will also accumulate blessings for descendants, yielding great benefits.
Zeng Keguang's Five-Stage Prescription: Once, in Baijia, Wan'an County, I encountered a skilled physician who was adept at treating leprosy and other malignant diseases, saving many lives. I was amazed, offered over one hundred taels of silver to obtain this prescription, and took it home. Shortly after, a neighbor suffering from this condition used it according to the prescription and recovered in several months. In recent years, many people nearby and far away have used this prescription, with eight or nine out of ten recovering. It has been tested repeatedly with consistent results; truly a miraculous prescription.
First Stage Prescription: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Yin Chaihu (Stellariae Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Decoct in water and take four doses.
Second Stage Prescription: Qianghuo, Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Fangfeng, Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huangqin, Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gancao. Decoct in water and take two doses.
Third Stage Prescription: Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Yinhua, Taoren (Persicae Semen), Zhike, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huangqin, Xuanshen. Decoct in water for three doses.
Fourth Stage Prescription: Jingjie, Fangfeng, Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix) (soaked in child's urine, then boiled in rice juice), Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma) (stir-fried with ginger juice), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (steamed with ginger juice).
Fifth Stage Prescription: Xuanshen, Zhike, Baizhi each 2 liang; Chishao, Yinhua each 1 liang; Huomaren (Cannabis Semen), Jili (Tribuli Fructus), Dafengzi (Aleuritidis Fructus) each 1 jin; Duhuo 2 qian; Zhi Chuanwu 1 piece; Bei Fangfeng 10 liang. All above are ground into fine powder. Qishe (Agkistrodon) 12 liang (head and tail removed, soaked in hot wine for 2-3 days, 5-6 days in autumn/winter, bones removed after softening, steamed until cooked, dried, and ground) is mixed with the above powder and honey to make pills. Take 4 qian three times daily (morning, noon, evening), washed down with tea.
Zaoci San (Soap Thorn Powder): A person suffered from malignant Hansen's disease, went blind due to wind, lost eyebrows and hair, and had a collapsed nasal bridge. An unusual person transmitted a formula: 3 jin of soap thorns (Gleditsiae Spina) are burnt until charred, steamed for one hour, dried, and ground into powder. Take 2 qian after meals, mixed with a strong decoction of Dahuang. After half a month, eyebrows and hair regrow, vision clears, and skin becomes moist.
Baihua She Wan (White Flower Snake Pill): A gentleman from Danyang suffered from Hansen's disease and was cured by a monk. He offered hundreds of taels for the formula, but the monk refused to transmit it. Yuan Sheng, a guest in the house, peeked at the hiding place, concealed it in his collar, and stole the record while the monk was drunk. Many users found it effective. One Baihua She (Deinagkistrodon acutus), one Wushao She (Zaocys dhumnades) (both head and tail removed, used raw), Fangfeng, Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum)... [Text fragmentary here in source regarding specific processing steps involving 'one day', 'medicine', 'seedling washed'] ...mixed with rice paste to form pills.
Bailudong Formula: Treats severe Hansen's disease with loss of eyebrows, curling of hands and feet, ulceration of skin and bone, everted lips, protruding eyes, facial deviation, body numbness, lack of pain or itch in flesh, purple spots on face, etc., with miraculous effect. True Qishe (skin and bones removed, soaked in wine, dried) 8 liang; Duhuo, Su Bohe (Mentha haplocalyx), Quanxie (Scorpio) (washed, salt removed), Chantui (legs removed), Jiangcan (roasted, legs removed), Chishao, each 6 liang; Fengzirou (Dafengzi kernel, oil removed completely), Tianma (soaked in wine), Fangfeng... [Text fragmentary] ...soaked), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Baiji (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis? Or potentially another herb given context, likely Bai Ji or similar, but text says Bai Ji usually implies Bletilla, here likely distinct), Yi [Text fragmentary]. Take another dose. Avoid [Text fragmentary]. Can use fire for warmth, prefer cotton... [Text fragmentary]. If taboos are not observed... [Text fragmentary].
Secret Transmission Qi Huang Chan Su Dan: Four fresh crabs, 1 jin of true raw lacquer, 2 liang each of true Chan Su (Toad Venom) and Ming Xionghuang (Real Realgar). First, place crabs in a porcelain jar, then add lacquer, seal tightly, and bury in soil for fourteen days. Upon retrieval, both substances have turned to water. Filter out dregs, pour the liquid into a pot, boil slowly over low heat until dry, and grind into fine powder. Then mix in the powders of Xionghuang and Chan Su evenly, and store in a porcelain jar. Take one dose on an empty stomach and one before bed, washed down with 2 qian of good wine. Within a month, the sores will completely heal and roots will be eliminated. It is wonderfully effective for Hansen's disease. Since the cost is not high, do not neglect its preparation, nor recklessly pass it to unworthy persons. Keep it secret.
Li Feng Formula: Ding Shenling of Zhenjiang obtained this secret transmission, was completely cured, and treated many others with miraculous efficacy. However, if the patient's eyebrows have completely fallen out, the condition is difficult to treat. If eyebrows remain, even if finger/toe joints are collapsed or damaged, effectiveness can be expected. For early-stage, shallow conditions, it is effective in all tests. First, take four doses of decoction, one dose per day. After finishing, take pills, each pill 1 qian, added with Fengzi Gao: 8 li in spring/autumn, 6 li in summer, 1 fen in winter.
Decoction Formula: Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhi, Kushen, Tianma, Qinjiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Chuan Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Fangfeng, Jingjie, Qianghuo, Haifengteng (Sargentodoxae Caulis), Yimi (Coicis Semen), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Haitongpi (Spatholobi Caulis), Cangzhu, Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Lianqiao, Gancao each 3 qian; Hei Zao (Black Dates) 2 pieces; Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) 1 slice. Decoct 2 bowls of water to 1 bowl, drink. Residue is decocted twice more and taken.
Pill Formula: Da Huma (Sesamum indicum), Xiao Huma, Bai Jili each 1 jin 4 liang; Kushen 1 jin; Fangfeng, Jingjie each 8 liang; Danggui, Cangzhu each 6 liang; Yimi, Xuduan, Niuxi each 4 liang. All are ground into fine powder and formed into pills with water. Take three times daily (morning, noon, evening), 3 qian or 2 qian per dose. Mix with Fengzi Nianwan (pills made from Fengzi) according to the number, and wash down with fine tea.
Fengzi Gao: Dafengzi kernels, shell removed. Stir-fry in a copper pot until 30% red and 70% black is achieved. Over-roasting reduces efficacy; under-roasting harms the eyes. After roasting, grind into a fine paste resembling brown sugar. Place in a copper vessel, boil vigorously 4-5 times over fire, pour onto paper on the ground, cover with an object, and set aside for use. If mold forms on top, wipe it off and continue normal use. Strictly avoid sexual intercourse and salt intake for one year; violation leads to non-healing. Also avoid soy sauce, vinegar, alcohol, and all stimulating foods like chicken, fish, and wind-aggravating items.
Another prescription: One live snake (thick as a wine cup), slit open with a bamboo knife to remove entrails, cut into inch-long segments, stand upright on tiles, and roast over fire... [Text fragmentary regarding duck feathers/skin].
Another prescription: Several jin of clear pine resin are melted in sweet, light spring water in a clean pot. Continuously pull and stretch the molten resin, then pour into cold water and manually separate. Repeat boiling and stretching dozens of times with fresh water until the resin is pure white and the water is extremely clear and tasteless. Dry in shade, grind extremely fine. Use 2 jin per batch. Daily, make congee with white rice, wait until warm, mix in the medicine powder evenly, and consume. Eat again when hungry; do not eat hard rice. Avoid all oils, salts, meat, alcohol, fruits, vegetables, sugar, and flour. Most importantly, do not drink tea when thirsty; use boiling water cooled slightly to mix and drink the medicine. Take several qian daily. After half a month, vomiting, chest discomfort, and nausea may occur, and toxic matter may pass in stool; must continue taking it, do not stop. For chronic cases, one batch cures; for early onset, only 1 jin is needed. Mustaches and eyebrows will grow, and tendons and bones will relax. Lifelong avoidance of stimulating foods is required. Extremely miraculous, simpler and more奇验 (miraculously effective) than previous formulas.
Another prescription: Sangpi (Mori Cortex), Dahuang, Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) each a handful. Decoct in water. Wash the affected area 2-3 times daily in a windless place. If parasites are present, add pigeon droppings to the decoction. If ulcerated, apply Succinum (Amber) powder to the lesion. This is a divine prescription.
