After vaccination (smallpox inoculation), smallpox generally does not occur again. Occasionally, it may appear, known as "small pox" (minor eruption), which is not true smallpox. This is similar to how chickenpox may occur after one has had smallpox. It must first present with fever for one or two days before erupting, and it will still suppurate. Among them, a few may be slightly larger, resembling pus-filling, and the base of the pustules may show faint red lines. However, they will scab over within six to seven days; the scabs are thin as paper and pose absolutely no danger. Do not mistakenly listen to others and believe this is a recurrence.
For those with excessive congenital toxicity that has not been fully expelled, when measles erupts, the rash will necessarily be dense. Consulting a physician to administer one or two diaphoretic agents (formulas to induce sweating and release the exterior) to disperse and resolve the pathogen will result in safety and peace. Occasionally, measles or similar eruptions may follow vaccination; these also require medical treatment, not because there is a major concern, but to spare the child from suffering.
Occasionally, after scabbing, redness and swelling may appear beside the scabs on the arm, somewhat resembling infected pustules. This is indeed one in ten thousand cases. It is appropriate to use bean dregs (i.e., tofu residue), or San Dou San (Three Bean Powder), Viola yedoensis (Viola), or Hibiscus mutabilis ointment, applying it around the periphery of the swelling, leaving the top uncovered to allow the toxin to exit from the apex. I recall that among those I vaccinated, only Mr. He Mengshaojun (son of Duke He of Changbo), Miss Cui Weisheng's daughter from our neighborhood, and the grandson of Zhang Yaoqing, a soldier officer, experienced this. Treating them with the prescribed medicines yielded immediate results. Over the past decade, I have vaccinated tens of thousands of children, and I have encountered this condition in only three individuals; it has not occurred otherwise.
If qi and blood stagnation in the interstices leads to sores on the limbs, applying Mian Jian San (Cocoon Powder) will cure it. For any sores, if wet and ulcerated, sprinkle Jinhua San (Jinhua Powder); if dry, apply with lard; if scarlet lichen or tinea develops, apply burnt aged cow dung.
One might ask: Smallpox is contraindicated to be scratched open, yet this method is not. Why? I say: This is originally an acupuncture-like method; toxins are drawn out by pricking. If pricking is harmless, what harm could scratching cause?
Another asks: Is extracting fresh pus harmful to the child from whom it is taken? I reply: I have tested this on tens of millions of people and have never seen any harm. The suspicion of harm arises because some vaccinators, seeing good pustules, would squeeze them open to steal the pus for inoculation. During extraction, if the force was too strong, the needle inserted too deeply, the pus was taken before filling, or the location was inappropriate due to meridian blockage, then harm might occur. However, the method for cowpox is different. Wait until the eighth or ninth day when the pustule is full, extract gently, and there is no harm to oneself and benefit to others. Why would one not do it? The danger of smallpox lies in the toxin; once the pustule is full, the toxin is fully discharged. With proper technique, there is absolutely no hindrance. Moreover, my practice of this is merely to help people with good prescriptions. If it harmed one to benefit another, even I would not do it.
If a pustule is scratched open before the seventh day, re-inoculation with pus water is still necessary. If it occurs after the eighth or ninth day, re-inoculation is impossible, but since the toxin has already been activated, rupture causes no harm. Some may scab over subsequently. If suppuration remains moist, wash with concentrated decoction of Wuyi tea, or decoction of soybean skin, or apply Zhiyan Gao (Rouge Ointment), Crucian Carp Ointment, or Camellia oil. All are acceptable. If suppuration fails to close, apply Sheng Ji San (Flesh-Generating Powder). Foreign medicinal waters and ointments are effective for this, but since they are not always available, they are not recorded here.
All the above points are those I have personally tested and found effective. Induced eruptions always appear, and appearances are always favorable. There is no worry of later disasters or recurrence. Medical treatment of smallpox is extremely difficult, yet now it has become extremely easy. Could this not be Heaven's compassion for infants? Parents desire their children to survive, grow, and reach adulthood. Rather than letting nature take its course with smallpox—where severity varies, doctors vary in wisdom, and outcomes are uncertain—it is better to guide the toxin out while it is unmanifested. It costs nothing, causes no fright, and brings such peace of mind and joy! I hope parents believe firmly without doubt, and like-minded individuals spread this widely. This is my earnest wish, and indeed the earnest wish of all parents.
