According to the discussion on "Zhong Gan Gu" (Middle Malnutrition with Parasitic Toxin), if one fails to observe dietary and behavioral restrictions, the urine will turn white and turbid, subsequently evolving into the Five Malnourishments (Wu Gan). The pathology begins with corrosion and worm generation in the lower body, later spreading to the oral cavity where rotting and worm generation occur. At this stage, the Gu toxin resides within the body; upon exposure to wind, it feels as if swarms of insects are flying onto the person. By this time, the Zang organs have been injured. All substances that induce the eruption of toxins, such as Zi Su (Perilla Leaf), Bo He (Mint), Chuan Xiong (Szechwan Lovage Root), Ginger, Garlic, as well as horse meat, mutton, Tong Hao (Artemisia argyi), and Lettuce, must absolutely not be consumed. Furthermore, tonic medicines must absolutely not be taken. However, recovery is difficult at this point. Nevertheless, this condition is definitely not contagious to others. One should only fear if the fluid from the malnutrition drips onto another person's hands or feet; washing these areas with a decoction of Zi Su, Bo He, Huai Hua (Sophora Flower), Ku Shen (Sophora Root), Garlic cloves, and Xiong Huang (Realgar) poses no harm. Upon death, filial sons and family members may contract it; if fluid drips onto their skin, the aforementioned decoction should be used for washing. These accounts stem from the words of Gu physicians.
Medicinal Formulas After Zhong Gan Transforms into Full Malnutrition (All medicines should be taken warm, not cold, to avoid inducing other diseases): Sheng Di (Rehmannia Root), Huai Hua (Sophora Flower), Yuan Shen (Scrophularia Root), Tiao Shen (Ginseng).
Lian Tian Huai Lian Tang (Lonicera and Sophora Coptis Decoction): Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit), Tiao Shen, Sheng Di, Yuan Shen, Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) each 5 qian; Qing Hao (Sweet Wormwood), Huai Hua each 1 liang; Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) 2 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. Modifications based on illness will not exceed the twenty ingredients mentioned above; success depends entirely on the physician's divine insight and clarity. For broken skin, wash with a decoction of Ci Gu Ye (Colocasia Leaf). Note: Lian Qiao and Tiao Shen are agents for treating Gu toxin; Huai Hua and Yuan Shen are agents for treating Malnutrition; other ingredients can be inferred by analogy.
Tofu, green vegetables, Amaranth, Winter Melon, Bamboo Shoots, Ci Gu (Elephant Foot Yam), Ge Shu (Dioscorea Polystachya), Chinese Cabbage, Ku Cai (Bitter Vegetable), Lotus Root, fine powder. For the above dishes, cooking them with one teacup of bamboo shoot water per meal yields excellent results.
Once transformed into Malnutrition, worms of malnutrition exist in all five meridians. Follow the formula, observe restrictions, and take medicine, one dose daily, adjusting as needed without exceeding the twenty aforementioned ingredients. After three months of medication, the malnutrition toxins in all meridians will be eliminated. Only the toxin in the Kidney Meridian remains difficult to cure rapidly. Continue medication and restrictions for ten more months, and full recovery is certain. Consumption of meat and salt is permissible, or consuming meat while abstaining from salt is even better. Continue taking medicine intermittently. As long as the urine remains clear without turbidity, the malnutrition toxin is exhausted; if there is no prickling sensation in the muscles and no feeling of ant bites on the body, the Gu toxin is also nearly cleared. Occasional sensations of lice crawling or flea bites are merely residual Qi of the Gu toxin due to incomplete purification of the blood. At this stage, fried, roasted, or grilled meats may be eaten; sexual activity is permissible. Continue taking medicine intermittently until bowel movements show no undigested food, indicating the Gu toxin is completely cleared. At this point, toxic-emitting foods like horse meat and mutton may be eaten. Chicken, duck, fish, shrimp, snails, and clams must be avoided for three years; all birds, aquatic creatures, and scaled beasts must be avoided for several years. Snake and clam consumption must be avoided for life. Note again: After transforming into Malnutrition, once the fever subsides while following the formula, strict dietary restrictions must be enforced. If restrictions are not strictly observed, the disease will relapse. With each relapse, the toxin penetrates deeper, making subsequent treatment ineffective. Exercise utmost caution.
