Every night before going to sleep, hold one or two lychee meats in the mouth, and spit them out the next morning; efficacy will be seen within half a month.
Another prescription: Every morning while washing the face, use powder of *Ipomoea nil* (White Morning Glory Seed) to brush teeth and rinse the mouth; after a long time, this ailment will naturally disappear.
Another method: One tael of *Alpinia oxyphylla* fruit (Yi Zhi Ren), two qian of *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* root (Licorice Root), ground together into fine powder. Swallow one or two qian dry each time. This is most suitable for halitosis caused by insufficient Heart Qi. Alternatively, use one qian of *Litharge* (Mi Tuo Seng), mixed with vinegar to rinse the mouth.
Another method: Boil fennel (*Foeniculum vulgare*) into a soup and consume it, or eat it raw; it is extremely effective. Or, constantly hold preserved plum (salted plum) in the mouth.
Two or three slices of *Scrophularia ningpoensis* root (Shen Shen) held in the mouth immediately generates saliva fluids, with great efficacy.
This is due to Cold-Spleen. Use five fen of charred *Atractylodes macrocephala* rhizome (Jiao Zhu), five fen of *Citrus reticulata* peel (Qing Pi), and five fen of processed *Zingiber officinale* rhizome (Pao Jiang); along with one qian of *Pinellia ternata* tuber (Fa Xia), one qian of *Costus root* (Mu Xiang), and one qian of *Syzygium aromaticum* bud (Ding Xiang). Grind all into fine powder, and make pills the size of millet grains using rice decoction. For a one-year-old child, administer ten pills; for adults, administer three to four qian per dose. After finishing the course, self-healing occurs. If there is no effect, it indicates Heat-Spleen, and one must follow the subsequent prescription.
Another method: Treats dribbling of saliva from the corners of the mouth due to Heat-Spleen. Use five fen of charred *Atractylodes macrocephala* rhizome (Jiao Zhu) and five fen of *Talcum* (Hua Shi); three fen of *Dolichos lablab* seed (Bian Dou), three fen of *Poria cocos* sclerotium (Fu Ling), and three fen of *Dendrobium nobile* stem (Shi Hu); two fen of *Coptis chinensis* rhizome (Huang Lian); one and a half fen of *Pueraria lobata* root (Ge Gen); and one fen of *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* root (Licorice Root). Grind all into powder and take with decoction of *Juncus effusus* stem (Deng Xin Tang). Children take one qian per dose; adults take three to four qian per dose.
In cases of poisoning from *Paullinia cupana* (Guava/Quince poison - note: context implies specific toxic reaction, often associated with certain fruits or substances in TCM context, here translated as Guava/Quince poison based on 'Mu Gua'), the tongue also swells to fill the mouth. See the chapter "Rescue from Various Poisons" for the solution.
This syndrome arises from excessive Fire in the Heart Meridian, causing sudden swelling and stiffness of the tongue, blockage of the throat, and immediate cessation of breath. It is named "Tongue Swelling" (She Zhang), a critical condition.
Use an arbitrary amount of *Vitriol* (Zao Fan), place it on a new tile and heat until red, spread it to cool, and grind into fine powder. Use a porcelain spoon to pry open the jaw, or apply preserved plum, or rub with *Pinellia ternata* tuber to open the mouth. Apply the medicine to the tongue; it works miraculously fast. Then, mix three qian of soot from the bottom of the cooking pot (soot from burning grass is preferred; avoid soot from burning coal) with wine and ingest it. If the tongue is swollen and there is phlegm in the throat, it is Wind-Throat (Hou Feng); consult prescriptions for throat diseases to treat it.
Another method: Mix soot from the bottom of the cooking pot with vinegar and apply to the upper and lower surfaces of the tongue; this is most effective, applying more is even better.
Another method: Apply blood from the comb of a rooster to the tongue; swallowing it leads to recovery.
Another method: Sprinkle powdered *Polygonum multiflorum* rootlet (Pu Huang) onto the tongue. If caused by Cold, careful adjustment and treatment are essential.
Another method: Take forty seeds of *Ricinus communis* (Castor Bean), extract the oil onto paper, burn the oil-soaked paper to produce smoke, and fumigate the tongue with the smoke; the swelling will subside. If bleeding occurs on the tongue, fumigating the nose will stop the bleeding. If mistakenly punctured, apply *Ba Cao Shuang* (Soot from burning various herbs) mixed with vinegar.
